Green Lantern to be filmed in Sydney
11:15 AEST Thu Apr 16 2009

The big-budget movie adaptation of comic superhero Green Lantern will be filmed in Sydney, with production to begin later this year.

The movie, produced by DC Comics and Warner Brothers, will be directed by Martin Campbell, the man behind the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale.

It is expected to create around 500 jobs in NSW with pre-production to start in July and filming to begin in November at Sydney's Fox Studios.

The filming is expected to take six to nine months.

"Bringing Green Lantern to NSW is a major coup," Premier Nathan Rees said when making the announcement at Fox Studios on Thursday.

"Films such as this invest heavily in the local economy and the flow on effects for local services such as transport, construction and the hotel industry."

State Development Minister Ian Macdonald said the government had worked with the producers to bring the film to NSW, with strong interest from other areas including Victoria and Queensland.

He would not disclose what incentives had been offered to bring Green Lantern to NSW, but said they were based around payroll tax reductions.

The November start for principle photography is a bit later than what I was assuming.

And if pre-production doesn't start until July, does that mean we won't hear anything about casting until then?

That seems like an awfully long shoot.....

Good. If waiting a little longer means we'll get a great GL flick then i'm all for it. We dont want a rush job.

I'm taking this as a good sign. A nine month shoot means they clearly have something quite grand in mind...

Yea i wonder whats up with the nov production start date, that is really pushing the dec 2010 release date a bit. Hopefully things will go smooth. And who knows maybe production could start sooner if pre production goes well and quickly.

They're still working on the script and casting.

bravo .........bravo. WB wants to f.. up again?

Why? Because they want to hang back and take their time?
Because they dont want to rush into something?

You want a Gl movie done right or you want a Gl movie done right?

What are some of Martin Campbell's other films, apart from the Bond movies, (who cares about Zorro) ?

Filming does seem a lot later than I expected. Perhaps the producers need the warm weather down in Oz in order to shoot the pic, since the director and producers did location scouting last month.

And for the 6-9 month shooting period in Australia, post-production will probably be a lot shorter than I hope for it to be. Especially since WB wants to produce it at a reasonable cost ($120-$150 million), I think they'd probably should start filming around August/September like was originally stated.

What does a long shoot have to do with waiting longer? The movie hasn't been delayed

I'm just surprised that they're even thinking that the shoot might be nine months. That's an awfully long shoot, for any movie

I guess then INFINITE CRISIS THE MOVIE will literally have an INFINITE shoot... :lmao:
Seriously, slow and steady wins the race...

Six to nine months sounds too long, so those numbers are either wrong or probably include some post production activities as well (special fx, etc). A 9 month shoot starting in Nov doesn't appear to leave enough time before it's scheduled release for what I would think is needed in post on such an effects laden production like this.

They're filming in Fox studios? Yikes! Remember what happened to the last DC movie (Superman Returns) that was filmed at Fox Studios? It was crap.

again, they're just filming there. Fox has NOTHING TO DO with it.

That's what Rothman wants you to think. Then he'll swoop in and repaint the sets while Martin Campbell is sleeping

^Yeah I know that but I just hope GL doesn't turn out to be like SR though. Everything so far feels like how it was when SR was filming. Next thing you know they might get someone who is unknown who never starred in a movie before as Hal. :hehe:

and Kevin Spacey as Sinatro who's obsessed with real estate?

^Why would an intergalactic space cop be obsessed with Earth's real estate. :lmao:
