Civil War Martin Freeman Cast as Everett Ross

Freeman as Norman is an interesting idea, but it would be outside of type for him. He doesn't really have the build or look intimidating. I'd also be interested to see if he can do an American accent.

Personally I could see Martin being a small original role like Gary Shandling was in Iron Man 2 and Winter Soldier.

I think Freeman could play a villain, but certainly if he's playing Norman it will be a deliberately very different portrayal than in the comics and other films. A more meek outer persona hiding the complete and utter irredeemable evil within.

Freeman has done American accents before. Freeman won an Emmy for his role in Fargo.

I think the most likely choice would be Everett K. Ross - can totally see him in that role. He has both got the vulnerablility/comedy thing going on. A bureaucrat out if his depth and rising to the challenge.

An outside mention maybe...could be...possibly...Dr Sam Sterns (The Leader) seeing as Tim Blake Nelson jumped ship to The Fantastic Four, Hurt as General Ross is set to return and all the 'supers', both dangerous and benign, seem to be getting involved.

Just an idea...

Now with Freeman cast, if Doc Strange is in Civil War we'd have 2 Sherlocks & 1 Watson in Cap 3, wait breaking news.. Jude Law signed to play Wendingo.

Jude Law is actually a comic book fan. Jude has a tattoo of Rorschach from "Watchmen".

I think Law could have been pretty good as Zemo.

Law is a pretty good actor, I feel like I haven't seen him in a movie in a bit.
Wouldn't mind him joining the MCU or DCU in some fashion

I just watched Gattaca yesterday, and reminded me how good Law is as an actor. His role in Road to Perdition, is similar to what I'd like the Riddler to be. for Marvel? Zemo could work, but that's already taken by Daniel Bruhl.

Why is him playing Norman such a stretch and unlikely?

Norman played a substantial role in the Civil War story arc.

It's stretch because it's "against type." The things we like about Martin Freeman, the things Martin Freeman is good at portraying Norman Osborn doesn't have. Vulnerability. Comedy. Aloofness. Befuddlement. There's no reason for them to hire Martin Freeman to play Norman Osborn other than the fact that he's a white male, and there are other white males who fit the type. Even the body type way off with Freeman being shorter and light haired, just screams: Not Norman Osborn!

If we're going with a Watson, Jude Law would make a kick-arse Norman Osborn. Much better. Heck, Lucy Liu as Norma Osborn would better serve the Osborn role than Martin Freeman.

Norman Osborn other than the fact that he's a white male

Pretty much.

Im not saying that Freeman doesn't have the skill to play Osborn. I just wouldn't buy it. As much as I like him. AS I said before, it would be very similar to casting Eisenberg as Luthor.

Now both of them could play the respective roles and turn out fine. But going in, I cant buy either of them as imposing, intimidating figures.

Jude Law as Osborn could actually work, but I've always loved Jason Isaacs.

Kevin Bacon
Jude Law
Jason Isaacs
Colin Firth (who was up for Bacon's role in First Class)

I think all would make a good Osborn.

Why people think that Freeman is playing, or would be a good, OSborn is beyond me. And please don't bring up the "People thought that Ledger would be bad as Joker argument" it's getting tired

Freeman is small & non-imposing and although his roles in Fargo and Sherlock show he can do serious roles, I just struggle to see him as Norman Osborn.

He's a great actor I really enjoy him. He's just not a good Osborn. Just because an actor is good doesn't mean he/she would be right for every role.

For some reason I see him in a bureaucrat role (Has something to do with the registration act) or a side role ala Zola

AS terry said earlier and I agree with I doubt it's a big role.

It's really unlikely to me Norman would have a role in Civil War other than a cameo. Especially when we still have no indication that Spider-Man's role will be all that big.

I actually "get" Eisenberg as Luthor. If I combine him from the Social Network with him from Now You See Me, I kinda get a little scared. That's one scary SOB who can kill you without raising a hand or his voice.

But yeah, a lot of his roles have been juvenile, so I can see how someone would think that's what he's good at.

Nah hahaha

Im sorry. I liked him in both those movies, loved him in TSN but he is not scary at all.

He looks about 150 soaking wet, has a tiny not powerful voice...come on really. If you were out and about and Eisenberg yells are you going to be scared or intimidating. IF I was at a bar and Eisenberg tries to fight me, I wouldn't even be a little scared. And Im not a big, muscular tough guy, I would be more afraid that he'd get hit and sue then him swinging back

If he was playing a serial killer or a school shooter I'd say he would be scary in that regard.

But Lex Luthor. Hell no. At least to me. I could be wrong. I just don't see it

And to bring it back to Martin Freeman everything I said above I can apply to him

At first I thought Uncle Ben, then remembered that Spiderman is fully formed in the MCU. Someone already mentioned it and now its stuck in my head- JJ Jameson!
