Marvel Studios to Adapt Runaways

I've never read The Runaways. What can you guys tell me about it? And is it a good movie material?

I can tell you that you HAVE to read it. That is all.

And, yes, it is good material.

The kids are stuck in NY fighting this group of superpowered people. In the middle of that struggle, a second group of superpowered people who hate the first group jumped in. The last issue ended with a confusing splash page in which 30 people are fighting each other for some reason I forgot b/c it sucked.

As a huge runaways fan, this is the best news i have heard in ages. And the fact that BKV is writing the film should guarentee it will be a faithful adaptation, or at the very least a true big screen vision right from the creator himself

and as for this comment.. its kinda ignorant. you mean well... but you do realise if marvel wants to surive as a growing studio, they have to do different types of movies that appeal to different audiences, while still maintaining there fan base. The more money there movies make, the more movies they can produce a year. Just because were getting a power pack, cloak and dagger, and runaways movies, doesn't mean theres going to be less focus on others, or these movies will be taking "other characters" spots

No it's not ignorant. It's called speaking on my behalf.

Everything I said speak for myself, not for Marvel. I believe wholeheartedly that every Marvel project will be a success, and it's just that I prefer to see movies based on bigger characters than niche one like Runaways.

I just read the first issue of Runaways. Didn't blow me away and I didn't really like the art and colouring. Reminded me of internet porn comics. But anyway, I'm reading more before my final judgment.

I did like the Young Avengers & Runaways Civil War mini.

well the thing is you become more successful by hitting all kinds of niches. Marvel has yet to release what i'd call and "indie" flick... not by movie standards per say.. but when i say indy in this reference i mean characters that arn't well known at all... similar to what blade was back when the first movie came out, he was a complete nobody. This market is the one market Warner Bros and DC get right by doing movies like Constantine and V for Vendetta. and its a good move for marvel to do lesser known characters. The key is doing both, not limiting your movie choices to one genre

True that Marvel shouldn't limit their option, but for myself I see that making the movie of the big guns would start the engine on every side like comics, merchs, and more merchs. Runaways are about plain clothed group of kids. Yeah, you can sell merch about them but it has less potential than selling stuff on the Black Panther or Namor.

ahh, but the beauty of runaways is that it's not your typical superhero movie... and that will be a major drawl to it. trust me, if you can market Highschool Musical.... you can market runaways... hell this means i get a great chance of finally getting runaways action-figures! and Leap frog vehicle!.

Runaways is a story that can possibly appeal to all ages... and make fans out of people who normally don't like the spandex genre. It's also a very real and urban feel to there book, so it will ground the universe in even more of reality

Outside of Spider-Man, X-Men, The Hulk, the FF, and possibly Captain America, the general public is relatively unaware of Marvel's "big guns". There are no automatic successes going forward except for Iron Man 2. Ok, maybe The Avengers as well. But, it's quite possible that Thor may prove difficult to cast and bring down to a reasonable budget level. Or Captain America may not do well overseas. Heck, it's possible that Robert Downey Jr. could fall off the wagon. Having options is a good thing for Marvel.

Runaways being relatively contained and new reader friendly is probably a selling point for Marvel to push as those are the type of series that really benefit from movies, not series with 40 years of convoluted history where the current series may not bear any similarity to the era that the movie makers are drawing inspiration from. The fact that Runaways may appeal to girls and women too IS a selling point as well.

If they do keep the original cast, yeah I can see a lot of females lining up for this one, which would definitely put it over the top regarding box office.

I always saw either Delroy Lindo or Avery Brooks.

I really like Delroy Lindo but I would kind of find it hard to see him as a bad guy. I think Jada Pickett Smith would be a good miss wilder.

I think the way to go would be to cast unknown or lesser known young actors and cast more famous established actors as the parents.

Plus we've already seen the casting trainwreck that Warner Brothers had with Justice League. Those iconic characters are far more difficult to cast than a title like Runaways where there won't be as much "baggage" involved with trying to get the actor/actress to fit a stringent list of requirements.

Let's get D.J. Cotrona for Victor Mancha and Armie Hammer for Chase Stein. :woot: :oldrazz:

hopefully they'll get some good actors, known or not.. and hey--

should the Velociraptor be a robot, CGI, or a combination?

those are both horrible casting choices :o

old lace is not a velociraptor :o shes a genetically engineered Deinonychus and should be done like jurassic park, a mix of CG and animatronics

Pretty cool how Iron Man paved the way for Runaways to come to the big screen. I've collected the trades and it's a really good story. There's just something about the concept of running away from everything you've ever known with only a handful of friends to support that really intrigues me.

I just hope that they stick to the comic origins I.E. keep the parents, Evil Gangsters, Evil Mutants, Evil Wizards, and, Evil Aliens, and Evil Time Travelers.

On another note, Even though Wonder Woman didn't work out for Joss Whedon I think he'd be perfect to adapt this into a movie. :hehe:
