Marvel's Runaways - Hulu Orders Drama Based on Marvel Comics

Read Runaways a looong time ago right as I was getting into comics thanks to the early superhero films of the 2000s. I remember enjoying it, but I don't remember everything about it. A reread is in order for me to reacquaint myself with the material, but from what I do remember, this looks to be a pretty good adaptation (pilot-wise).

Hyped for this and Cloak and Dagger.

Runaways is one of the books I read every few years. It was one of my first forays into comics that didn't star the major heroes. I hope they don't screw the pooch with this one.

I'm surprised no one posted the cast pic. People on twitter are complaining saying Gert isn't fat enough.:whatever:

^She's not. Also chase looks five years older than everyone else. Also, Old Lace isn't in the cast pic, and she absolutely should be, because she's that key. And Molly Hernandez is too old. I think a little expectation lowering is more than in order in terms of faithfulness.

This is on Hulu, not Freeform. You're thinking of New Warriors that is joining Cloak and Dagger on Freeform.

Ah! That explains the large Hulu logo on the poster, good stuff.

New Warriors I'm less excited, but that's probably just because I never 'got' Squirrel Girl and there's only one actress I can think of who can pull off that kind of adorable-as-superpower, and she isn't likely to do a Freeform TV series.

Molly was 13 instead of 11 in Brian K. Vaughan's original Runaways pitch to Marvel. The actress playing Molly is 14 so she is only a year older than Vaughan's original take on the character.

Chase was the oldest Runaway in the books so Sulkin looking older than the rest of them was probably intentional.

Molly may have been 13 in the book, but she was written like she was way younger. I always got an 8 or 9 year old vibe from her in the books.

I'm pretty sure they were trying to recreate this cover which Old Lace is also not on.

Gert's not fat enough. Nico isn't goth enough. Alex's hair isn't big enough. Chase isn't blond enough. Karolina's hair isn't long enough. Molly is too old.

THIS SHOW IS GOING TO SUCK.

:o

On a more serious note though, it looks like Karolina might be wearing her special bracelet in the cast pic. But it could just be a regular bracelet.

Molly doesn't look recognisably like Molly in that pic but just some random girl.

Would've been nice to have had a full-length shot like the comic pic on which it is supposedly inspired.

Pfft. I don't care about the bracelet. I want to know if she's got her flip flops which is part of her look. :o

Molly has the pink hat in the trailer.

Brian K. Vaughan wrote her younger than she was. Molly's innocence was supposed to contrast the older characters

I always thought she was younger, and brattier than someone who would be 13 or 14. I think they could've picked a younger-looking actress even if she is 14.

I get that, but all it does is raise the question: Why not just make her younger? What was the point of having her be 13, but writing her like she was 8?

And that question extends to the show. It's gonna be hard buying the dynamic of her as a younger, more innocent team member if she looks the same age as the rest. It will just make the character look like an idiot.

Chase looks a little too old to be hanging out with the rest.

He looks more like a university student. How old is the actor?

Is it just me or there are too many shows coming from Marvel TV?

The trailer is too short for me to give an opinion. I am not excited about the characters. And will only watch it because I am a completist.

He is 24.

The rest of them are aged between 19 and 22 expect the actress that plays Molly.

There are only four new upcoming Marvel series (not counting Defenders which is a 8 episode mini series event).

Runaway (Hulu)
Cloak & Dagger (Freeform)
New Warriors (Freeform)
Punisher (Netflix)

Runaways and Cloak & Dagger have ten episode season orders.

Marvel has less shows than DC at the moment.

DC currently has
Supergirl
Flash
Legends Of Tomorrow
Arrow
Gotham
Lucifer
iZombie
Preacher

With these shows also coming soon from DC
Teen Titans
Black Lightening
Krypton
Scapled

Runaways and Cloak & Dagger are teen hero shows which is something we have not seen yet in the MCU. Spider-Man is the only current Teen hero. New Warriors is a comedy show and Punisher is a dark anti-hero vigilante show.

I get that, but all it does is raise the question: Why not just make her younger? What was the point of having her be 13, but writing her like she was 8?

When Runaways came out I remember a lot of people commenting on how Molly was written younger than she was.

Guess I'm the only one that doesn't think Chase looks that much older than the rest. Have you seen some highschoolers lately? I'd buy him being 18 or 19.

And Inhumans, and I assume psylockolussus was including the X-Men series.

However, Marvel is trying to appeal to varied demographics, not fans who want to watch every movie/show.

My only issue with age is that this show is about "runaway" children...so...you not only need these kids to look young enough to run away from home...you theoretically need them to STILL look that young 3 seasons from now. I guess it'll be a case where a few of them take on the role of adults to "raise" the younger characters.

I can see the complaints about Gert. Her having a somewhat different body type than your average CB female, and be unashamed of it, was part of what made her stand out/interesting. But I think that this has more with Hollywood's own iffy history in hiring practices than necessarily a problem with the show itself.

The rest, looks good. I do hop that Nico has more overt Goth looks as the show goes on though.

Its a tricky thing. The traitor is such a big part of the initial comic arc that you can't really remove it or change it without radically revamping the whole thing. At the same time, you can't realistically keep it a secret, because every reader knows about the traitor, and Runaways is not exactly an obscure comic.

So, it all comes down to good execution, and drama that doesn't depend on a surprise twist, but on characterization. That way, instead of ( lack of ) shock at the ( not ) surprise twist, you can milk dread for a foreseen betrayal the whole time.
