Chris Hemsworth was made a movie star after starring as Thor. He can command 5-10 million a film (though nearly all of his non-Thor roles have been flops).

How's Chris Evans doing outside of the MCU? His directorial debut flopped and the only film he's done of note is Snowpiercer. More due to the director than due to him. Scarlett J has had a few flops during this period but has also had a huge hit in LUCY. That and her role as BW put her up amongst the highest paid actresses in the industry.

do you think the MCU will boost Brie Larson and Chadwick Boseman to the A-list like it has done for others?
what about the likes of a Jeremy Renner. A world class actor who probably can compete for the best roles along with Joaquin Phoenix or Christian Bale but he's spending time as Hawkeye. Good career move? Or Don Cheadle? He's now mostly known as War Machine to audiences.

Hemsworth has starred in a lot of movies outside of Thor, but most of them have been flops as well:

Those were his major releases outside of the Marvel Universe. His only moderate hit was really Snow White and the Huntsman, but then look at the sequel. It bombed, and not even return of Charlize Theron could save it.

Once you're locked as a lead, there's not much else left. Maybe some dramas here and there. Chris Evans was in a Marc Webb flick this year.
Unless...you're Pratt and you get to play with dinosaurs.
Actually, if you're a Guardian you likely have had and will continue to have the most bankable careers outside the MCU.
Scar-Jo's voicework has probably been in more successful features than her live-action work since she became an action star.

Johansson is still pretty active. Ghost in the Shell not withstanding, Lucy was a big hit for her. Also, she was pretty established before the MCU as well.

Downey also had quite a few hits outside the MCU post-Iron Man: Tropic Thunder, Due Date, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Homes: Game of Shadows. People forget Due Date, but it did well. Only The Judge and Soloist didn't really do big business, but The Judge was more of a prestige drama that didn't become a prestige drama, and The Soloist was a smaller drama.

Also, Hemsworth has worked a ton. It's just that he hasn't really broken out as a bankable star outside of Thor. He's clearly had no problem getting work though.

Of course, I mean work that has been of notable profit since they've been signed with the MCU. Didn't mean to imply they aren't active.
Downey had a brief spurt with that last one from 2011. His next one is a biopic and...a reboot...of Dr DoLittle...

I mean with the money he makes on Marvel, Downey doesn't really have to do anything else. Also, he's had to pretty much work on them like almost annually since Avengers 2.

Tom Holland I don't think will be that big outside Spider-Man. I think he will be OK, but I think Spider-Man will be his most notable role. I know he's going to try and play Nate Drake in Uncharted, but whatever.

Rush was a moderate success. $90 million on a $38 million budget. Great movie too.

Brie Larson is only getting more exposure since winning her Oscar, and Black Panther will definitely boost Boseman to the A-list. As for Renner and Cheadle, they only rarely take on lead roles, and it seems like when they do they're in more low key films. Both of them have played supporting roles in the majority of films they've been in, save for a few notable exceptions like The Hurt Locker and Hotel Rwanda.

I'd say Renner is about at his ceiling. Case in point, Universal tried to make him the new face of the Bourne franchise, and that was a miserable failure. Can have roles like Hawkeye and his roles like in American Hustle and the Mission Impossible series. He's never going to be the face of a franchise.

what about a guy like Mackie? I feel his inclusion in Winter Soldier drastically boosted his career. He's not gonna be a star even on the level of say Evans but he's getting some nice roles.

Tom Hiddleston has made the most of his appearances as Loki. It's fair to say his leading man career is way bigger than say Chris Evans

Eh, I dunno. He's gotten a few significant roles, but one was Crimson Peak. Wasn't the actual lead there. Kong was more of an ensemble. And then he had I Saw the Light more of a drama.

While the MCU helps them get more roles it doesn't really translate to the box office.

ScarJo probably has the best run outside of Marvel with successful movies.

Downey I feel like only has Sherlock Holmes outside of Marvel that has been successful.

Jeremy does well but he isn't really the lead in most of them I feel like.

Tropic Thunder and Due Date were both very successful.

I believe TT broke even. Though i'd consider that a success as it was a large budget R rated comedy.

And to another post, yeah the likes of Scarlett was an A-lister prior to MCU. I do wonder how Ruffalo's careeer as been affected. He's done lot of drama roles like Renner but not as much as a leading man if it's not an indie type film.

Hemsworth has an upcoming film where he plays a Special Forces commander during the invasion/fall of the Taliban. Probably another flop.

She was a big celebrity before the MCU but I wouldn't call her a massive box office draw, most of her career had been in lower budget artier stuff and the odd romcom.

Generally I tend to think that the inflation in ticket prices has weakened the draw of name value alone. People will pay to see a star in a role they know or a story there interested in seeing but less so just for the star. You could argue I spose home release might be more traditional as prices there have gone in the opposite direction so many some of these less successful star vehicles earn back a bit more than normal there?

I could see Mackie being a successful leading man if given the opportunity to front something with franchise potential. Mackie needs something like a Beverly Hills cop franchise.

Renner makes millions on his successful house flipping side business so I don't think he cares about acting for the money anymore.

I think Chris Pratt, rdj and clark gregg benefited the most from the mcu. Pratt was made onto a bankable leading man. Rdj's career was revitalized and 50 year old jobbing actor clark got a following that allowed him to front his own tv series spin off.

Yeah the MCU has probably helped Pratt & Downey the most, and in the only two ways that the MCU can, it seems - either "settling for your miracle" with Marvel (which can be enough, looking at Downey and/or Evans), or getting around and out there in the best of ways, which is what Pratt's benefitted from.

To be fair I think RDJ was clearly on the rise again pre Ironman, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a Scanner Darkly and Zodiac all went down well and helped establish a lot of the persona he's traded on since. He has also had the benefit of course of being in a hell of a lot of MCU films, even if he is killed off in the Infinity War that's going to be what 8/9 films he's had leading or co leading roles in?

Pratt did definitely seem to come more out of nowhere, granted he was known but I don't think anyone was expecting anything like the career takeoff he's had since.

I concur. He was lucky to get the leads in GoTG and JW. Almost like a modern day Harrison Ford. His charisma (and good sense of humor) carries him forward. though has he had a hit outside of his 2 franchies? I believe both Mag7 and Passengers broke even but were not what studios hoped for.

Though he's still among the biggest stars of his generation. Arguably more famous than Hemsworth or even Tatum right now. Not as talented as a Gyllenhaal or a Rosling or Gardfield but he seems to get interest in a film.

I think Good Night, and Good Luck was pre-Iron Man too.

Well for Chris Evans, he was sort of wallowing in supporting actor obscurity until he got the opportunity to play Cap.

I don't know. In a way I feel like Marvel's held RDJ back. I certainly can't blame the guy for sticking with the highest paying job he's had but I'd really like to see him break out of the Iron Man schtick.

He's a great actor. It would be a shame if he spends the rest of his career reprising Tony Stark in some way or another.

Same with Evans. He's the actor Pratt was touted to be but he's sort of avoided outside breaks. I'd like to see him in something like Snowpiercer again.

I don't think you could argue the MCU has actually hurt anyone's careers. First of all, if you were an actor, what other blockbusters would you rather be in over the past decade? Second, have you ever heard an actor say they got passed up because they were in an MCU film?

So far, the career trajectories for MCU actors seem to range from as good as Harrison Ford to as "bad' as Mark Hamill.

He's great in Gifted. Check it out.
