Can we have some sort of effect this time around rather than bullet time?
I get that they are trying to show that things slow down and Spider-Man's senses works out what is dangerous to him, but how would that work with a bomb (for example).

Sure, we aren't going to get squiggly lines, but some sort of 'shimmer' effect, SOMETHING rather than time slowing down.

It would be nice.

Sound: high pitched ringing/buzzing similar to a few of those cartoon examples

Visual 1: fuzz/distortion to everything around him (like a visual static); source of the threat would remain clear and focused

Visual (option): bleaching out of background colors while threats become super-saturated

Not exactly bullet time but I kind of picture everything freezing and the camera zooming through several subjects very quickly before it identifies the threat.

bullet time itself is fine but should be used sparingly and only when absolute agility and skill is required (dodging bullets, many simultaneous attacks, etc)

I'd love to see the little yellow lightening bolts (or the sonic ray effect) appear on/near his head with a little ringing or buzzing sound.

The thing with bullet time is it suggests the Spider-Sense is reflexes based when in fact the Spider-Sense is extra sensory. If Spider-Man were stood in front of a bomb and he went to cut the wrong wire, his spider sense would tingle. That has nothing whatsoever to do with reflexes and I would like to see something that represents that.

I'd like it to be at least consistent. In all of the previous movies there have been many instances where it should go off and it doesn't.

excellent post!

I liked ASM2's Spider Sense. But I would like it if Spidey's head had those yellow sparks coming out. It might be stupid, but I'd really enjoy it.

Great examples! I like the visual 1 idea.

And to the emboldened...that was how Raimi did it in SM1 just before he fought Flash in the hallway.

I thought the 'bullet time' was just a good way of referencing Pete's Spidey sense recognizing the threat and allowing his reflexes to kick in and remove himself from harm's way. All the 'bullet time' does is show the audience that his senses and reflexes are much quicker than normal.

I like the 90's series how it's a negative image. But they definitely need something less subtle.

^ Less subtle?

I actually hadn't realized that there was a Spider-Sense in the Raimi movies. I guess that's the problem with bullet time, it could mean many things. As much as I'm partial to the 90s cartoon, I'm not sure that translates well to live-action.

What if it was entirely sound-based? Just do the screeching sound of the Spider-Sense going off and Peter/Spidey reacting. The audience will quickly learn it means danger. But it's a tingling sense, not a visual cue, so it doesn't make sense to change the entire color pallet.

Yes, less subtle. In TASM it was way too subtle. Little noise in the background and that's it.

And in Raimi's you didn't notice the spider-sense when Flash was about to punch him in the back of the head? That was pretty obvious. Peter never had it in TASM or TASM 2 when he was in any danger, just mostly when something was happening far away from him.

Yes, I agree. For instance, why didn't Peter's spider sense alert him when the Green Goblin was in the burning building? I take it as his spider sense is not 100% perfect but still...

His spider sense didn't alert him to the goblins presence because that would tip off the audience too.

Great post and awesome ideas!

You're right, with the fly and the spitball... I was visualizing it moving much more quickly but thinking about it some more I'm starting to think that extreme isn't even necessary.

Sometimes less is more. Maybe just the tttzzzzzzzznggg sound and a slight visual cue, like a shimmer or visual snow surrounding his head but only lasting for the second or so when it activates. It doesn't have to drop into slow-mo to illustrate the threat; that can be determined moments later as we watch Pete react to it, leaving the audience a step or two behind him and really selling the idea.

Ideally I'd like to emulate the feel of this

but without the actual wavy lines. I think the quick flash of white noise around his head combined with the tingle sound f/x would work really well.

I liked how the spider sense was done in TASM1. It was just a buzzing/vibrating sound coming from his head and I thought it was nice and simple.

They NEED to do the half-mask, half-face. It's so perfect cinematically I'm shocked it hasn't happened yet.

I suggested this a bunch of times back when ASM was still in production until I finally got tired of people telling me how stupid they thought it was and how "unrealistic" it was and why did I want to ruin the movie before it even came out? I'd love it though, you don't get more classic Spidey than that.
