there's always been talk and comparisons of Superman to Jesus. there's an interview up on the main page right now where Bryan Singer is interviewed about the spiritual side of "Superman Returns."

i was wondering, are there pictures and/or panels from the comics that imply a more spiritual side to Superman? any panels that are inspired by moments in Christ's life? if you have 'em, i'd love to see them and as they get posted, i'd love to discuss them!

I remember seeing this image and the story is a woman thinks superman is an angel. But this isnt due out until next february, can't think of any previous images

heh, that's cool. i'll have to check that out when it comes out.

on a side note, what is this, the "Scottish" convention?

Read the whole 'Death of Superman' arc. He dies for us and then when Lois (A metaphorical Mary Magdalene) opens his tomb, he's gone.

Superman is more of an ANGEL than a God as shown in "Birthright".

Yeah, check the two page spread where he's holding Jimmy and the Helicopter in Birthright. Classic book that was.

^Allegorically speaking, don’t the heroes of the DC universe correlate to Greek Gods though? The Flash is Hermes, Batman is Hades, Aquaman is Poseidon.
I suppose Superman is Zeus (though Captain Marvel would be more obvious).

I think that in a lot of ways, his divinity and messianic traits are purely relative to the writer. There’s as much there as you choose to write into it I think.

HELLOH!! Superman, created by Jews, sent by his father from the heavens into the world, widely accepted by Gentiles. Died battling a being of pure evil to save the world and then came back to life.

Ring any bells?

Oh and then there's the image of a priest kneeling before him...

i hadn't thought about it like that. that makes a lot of sense. has anyone at DC gone on record saying that?

I remember a similar thread on this but for Superman Returns. The poster to that film, the final poster where he's above the earth, is based on several Christ pictures.

I usually slept through/jigged history, but isn't Hades hell itself rather than satan?

no the underworld is tartarus where hades presides. its just one of those thing as time passes the way things are said change. originally - 'your going to hades'-the person but it is synonymous with your going to hell.

Lois isn't like Mary Magdalene...The only part would be when she holds the dead Superman.

I loved that story arc

i really enjoyed that arc, too. really loved the stuff between the priest and Supes. it wandered into the profound from time to time, which i really appreciated.

are their links and references to other religions, not just Christianity?

I think that the original Biblical connection for SUperman would have been the story of Moses. They are both sent away by their parents for the sole sake of saving their lives. I just don't equate the Death of Superman arc as any sort of Christian allegory or some such. It certainly wasn't conceived that way. SUperman's actions have always been more about protecting people from physical harm and not from some sort of spiritual antagonist. There's a big difference there.
