** Metal ** The Thread! II

Yeah doing my second listen now! Really enjoyed it the first time but BTBAM albums take a good 5-10 listens for me to unpack haha. But it's managing to have a fresh different vibe but also sound just like another BTBAM album which is a good mix to hit I think.
Gave a second listen this morning. Eh, I suppose it's definitely a "fun" album... :funny: My favourite tracks are Absent Thereafter and Beautifully Human. Hard to describe their genre... Prog metal, technical metalcore, avant-garde metal...

Looking forward to their show this Friday. Apparently, they have vinyl records of their old albums including Colors at the merch table so I will definitely pick it up and maybe The Great Misdirect if they have it.

By the way, if you're thinking of getting the vinyl of the latest album, there's a typo on the spine "The Blue Nowewhere". The CD release is also affected. Just a heads-up if that kind of error bothers you.

Yeah I have heard about the typo, that's pretty funny to me. I already had it ordered so will probably get my copy this week or something. Maybe a few years from now the 'typo first edition' will be really valuable. :D

The only big thing I'm missing with BTBAM physically is the debut album on CD. Got all the other albums on CD and vinyl as well as a few extra ones (like live albums).

RIP. :csad: A pioneer to the MDM genre.

Despite being from Gothenburg I never spent much time with At the Gates (especially compared to other bands from the city like In Flames or Dark Tranquillity) but I've gone back and listened to some ATG since the news broke and they definitely put out some great albums. For me the debut and Slaughter of the Soul (which I had listened to at least a few times decades ago) stands out.

Yeah, Red in the Sky and SotS are their best. The latter was re-issued on vinyl as a RSD exclusive last year, but either no copies were available in Canada or my local records stores couldn't get it. :csad:

What if Black Sabbath was in a "sword and sorcery" universe à la Conan the Barbarian?

Recently discovered this new'ish doom metal band that is gaining a lot of popularity. They are currently touring to promote their new album released two weeks ago, and I missed their show when they had come here. 😭 Looks like they give one hell of a live performance. Can't wait to pickup my copy of the record.

New Paradise Lost album is good. A mix of their old gothic sound with their modern heavy doom. Will give it another listen.

Mors Principium Est's new album is pretty decent too for those looking for a good Gothenburg-style of melodeath.

Metalcore (with a slice of EDM) band Ankor's newest single, MADARA - endless dream. I thought their last album from a while back, Shoganai, was special.

For something very different from a new symphonic progressive metal band calling itself Part of the Theory out of Greece, their new song is called Famished Mammon. Singer Vicky Kapetanopoulou is a bit Alanis Morissette, a bit operatic. It’s epic. They said in an interview they’re working on an album. I wonder what comes next!

(pro-shot live performance)

I've been getting into MDB over the last few months and I really like what I've heard. Hard to imagine them with another frontman, especially this late in. I think some singers can be replaced on paper but some have big personalities that are part of the 'vibe' of the band and this feels like that.

@Zantera I don't know/remember if you're a fan of Isis, but just in case:

Worldwide release in indie stores in 2026. Not my favourite albums of theirs but will still grab them if my stores have them. I hope to get my hands on Panopticon and Oceanic.

I discovered them in mid 2000s if I recall correctly. It was when I started listening to more extreme metal. Turn Loose the Swans and The Angel and the Dark River are probably my favourite albums from them.

Oh nice! I would probably get both of those. I do own Oceanic (only on black vinyl but still), one of my biggest white whales was missing out on Panopciton. That's their best album and would probably make my all time top50 albums. Hope it gets re-released one day.

I've been obsessed with Frayle as of late. They're a perfect mixture of gothic metal and a little doom. Their new album fits the spooky season like a glove.

Both albums are post-metal classics, but yes, Panopticon is also my fave from them. They played their very last show here and I unfortunately missed that. :csad:

Thanks for the rec. At first, they looked like a metalcore band and I would have dismissed them.

"Don't judge a book by its cover" right? :hehe:
