Fant4stic Michael B Jordan is "Flame On!" The Human Torch - Part 2

There's nothing wrong with innovation but it's naive to think that black actors should be happy to be cast only in roles as brand new created superheros instead of the established one's the white actors will get. That is a huge disadvantage as an actor to be in.

I agree with the other poster that more effort should be put into selling the already established black superheros.

Regardless I don't see a huge issue with a black actor playing an originally white superhero where race isn't a huge part of that character.

Frankly I'm not sure why Jason Mamoa's casting as Aquaman is being seen as great and innovative but Michael B. Jordan has been bashed since the beginning?

Jason Mamoa has blatantly stated how he's happy they've changed their Aquaman from a blond white guy to a brown skinned polynesian. I mean if MBJ said anything similar this board would probably call for his head?

I can't speak for anybody else, but I personally didn't care that they cast a black guy in the role.

My issue is when people prop it up as progressive when it truly is not. It's nepotism.

As well it is, 100000%, a cop out that the entire storm family is now black but the female lead that is supposed to be a member of that family is STILL white. Because she has to end up with the white male lead. That's not progressive. That's having your cake and eating it too.

Trank cast his friend. Simple fact of the matter. He didn't even test as far as I'm aware. And then Trank forced the source material to fit that casting.

MBJ is total nepotism.

How do you Mara didn't just have better chemistry with MBJ so Sue stayed white?
We know she auditioned so it wasn't her "whiteness" that got her the part.

And I'm glad to know that a mixed race family of biological and non-biological kids isn't progressive. TV really is ahead of the game.

Now the gays will want to be considered not progressive!! Am I right???!!!

The same reason Mark Millar made Sam Jackson into Nick Fury in the Ultimates and Marvel followed suit in the MCU.

The kinds of characters they replace share something in common that isn't their skin tone. Something the Human Torch didn't.

An object that heats up to the levels of a star, should not look like it's at room temperature.

There have been versions of the torch where the costume and face were visible, but he's always looked like he's heated up from the core.

.
I think it's more that the flame looks out of control.

Which version of the man on fire effect did you like best?

Story's Human Torch or Singer's Sunspot?

Sunspot looked great...but he looks more like the surface of the sun with Solar flares coming off his body; which is a completely different look than what they're going for in the Fan4

That's kind of what I mean. Sunspot and Story's Torch look like men of fire i.e their bodies are just made of fire.

The way Trank's Torch lights up and when he confronts Sue is the fire moving with his body like he's on fire. The flames aren't just staying constant.

I want Johnny's face to remain as CGI light as possible so his sublte emotions are the actors and not hard to see.

I really like the comparison to the Alex Ross Human Torch made a few pages back in the thread. It looks great far away and hopefully better closeup.

Really, REALLY late to the game on this, but I finally started watching The Wire on Amazon. MBJ was great on that show, even at a really young age... especially considering how bad most kid actors are. He was also really good in Chronicle. So while I have my doubts about this movie, none of them have anything to do with MBJ.

MBJ is a great actor...... doesn't mean he should play this role.

Because Johnny Storm is a blonde white guy.

Captain Nemo should be Hindu Indian and Jack Reacher is a HUGE guy that could fit Tom Cruise in his pocket. Also, Jarvis is the contemporary butler of Tony Stark and not an AI. But... No. Let's go on about comic accuracy and visual fidelity to the source material.

Race change happens all the time in films and people will continue to complain. The thing I find sickening is the people that try to shame others for wanting an actor that comes closest to resembling the character they love and then turn around and do the same thing by complaining about other characters that have had their race changed and feel their more justified then the people they tried to shame. If you don't have a problem with a white character being changed then you shouldn't have a problem with other characters race being changed which means we should do away with the term "whitewashing" because people shouldn't have a problem with it.

Yes it does, but when you have an art form, that is just as much the visual as it is the written word on the page, when that visual is changed taking that page of art and word to the big screen, there is going to be those that are not happy, and if it is a character that you have grown up with, wanted to be, pretended that you were that character, etc, well then that makes it even harder. So, although I believe that MJB will be fine as Johnny, I understand why some are upset, and honestly I see it more as "hey my buddy can play this part, I'll give it to him" more than any barrier breaking choice to change the face of the comic book movie. He likes MJB and gave him the role. Pretty simple...

At this point I think casting has become the least of anyone's fears when it comes to this film.

Yep....definitely.

There is a thing called "context". But I get it... Being blindly self righteous can be addictive. It's frankly, the go to emotional state around here. Notice... At no part was I "shaming" anyone into anything. Though I have heard a lot of "shaming" about not being a real FF fan if I'm not frothing at the mouth about this film in these threads. YMMV of course.

Yes, because directors of other comic book movies NEVER cast their friends or people they've worked with before....:whatever: Why is it such an issue in this case? Because they changed a white character to a black character?

People have definitely pulled the "racist" thing on here over the past year...which isn't going to be tolerated, but neither is the "you don't have an opinion, you aren't a real fan" so if you can show me these posts, I would appreciate it because they need to be dealt with....

I have definitely seen those post of "I can understand where the decades long fans of the F4 could be upset..." I've posted a few of those, because I can understand where they are coming from...but I haven't seen any posts stating that an opinion isn't valid because they aren't a true/long time fan, etc...so I really would like to know if there is any, because that won't fly either.

Whether you like Michael B. Jordan being cast in the role or not it's a done deal and in the end I think we can all agree that's not the thing that will make or break this film.

Looks to me like it could quite possibly be the same things that downed the last 2. Hopefully not, but quite possible.

Hey instead of being so super good at cherry picking what you want to ***** about, try reading WHOLE posts.

It really, really helps in knowing what the hell you're talking about.
