Ant-Man Michael Douglas is Hank Pym

I think good guy mad scientist is probably more appropriate way to describe Pym in the comics. Mad scientists are often villains but in Pym's case it is flipped and his a hero.

If he was an evil genius, and if he has a hand in Ultron (remember it's a dormant program jumpstarted by Stark), that could explain why the program didnt go through; SHIELD probably didnt trust Pym.

Wally Wingert had the best Hank Pym voice in the best Avengers cartoon.

Someone said something that I thought was apt to Hank Pym.

One of the reasons why Hank kinda fell through as a character is because Marvel never took the time to properly develop his mythos, instead focusing on all of his problems.

Eh, he had years before his "problems" entered the plot. Blaming it on "focusing on the problems" is getting things out of order. The "problems" were introduced as one of many attempts to actually give Pym some character development, and acquire some popularity. If not for his psychotic break, we probably wouldn't even remember Hank Pym these days.

I think the issue is with focusing on the problems they ignored other aspects of the character. He became known just for is issues because they never took the time to develop much beyond that.

Considering he has been around for fifty years is very underdeveloped in some ways. Yes he hasn't a solo comic but he is still underdeveloped in comparison to many of his complementaries.

Besides the non-canon Season One Ant-Man comic I think the first time we saw Hank's childhood/learned his parents names was in the Age Of Ultron comic a couple years ago. Pym's background before becoming Ant-Man is almost non-existent.

Douglas' Pym is giving off some serious Harold Finch vibes, and he's even pitching to Rudd's Lang in the same manner that Finch did to Reese back then. Which would make it even more ironic if he had a hand in the creation of the MachineUltron; it's probably one of his labs that gets ruined in the Chitauri invasion and where the Ultron program is discovered.

I like Douglas as an actor I just don't buy him as a once was/still is a brainiac scientist type guy.

If he isn't killed off in Ant-Man I hope he comes back in Civil War.

I wonder why he has a goatee in the film. Douglas grew it for the role and Pym isn't known for having facial hair so I guess it must be there for a reason.

Heres my theory:

I think Hank Pym was probably the 2nd official super hero in the MCU after Captain America. He started out as an upbeat, idealistic scientist who became a secret SHIELD agent using his tech. He and Jan then went on missions as Ant Man and Wasp. It could possibly be that they along with Howard Stark and Peggy Carter created the original Avengers Initiative. At some point, Jan was killed maybe accidentally by Hank during a big mission. Feeling responsible, he gave up his Ant Man alter ego and quit SHIELD. This is why his history isnt widely known by Tony etc. It was probably only a brief time he acted as Ant Man. Decades later we'll see him as the older, more pessimistic scientist who despises super heroes like Iron Man & Co who have been more successful at what he had tried to do.

Kevin Feige said Pym had many adventures as Ant-Man so I don't think his time as Ant-Man was brief. I think as Hank and Wasp were Cold War superheroes their missions were covert.

Pym also seems very adamant about not letting his technology fall into the wrong hands so is more likely to be secretive. Corey Stoll said part of the reason Pym and Cross fall out is because Pym won't allow him to use his Ant-Man technology.

Pym probably views most superheroes like Iron Man as reckless as the Stark family are not the most responsible people when it comes to keeping his their dangerous technology in check.

This is similar to my thoughts. I would love to see the original Avengers set in the 60's/70's/80's/whenever with Director Peggy Carter and Howard Stark as SHIELD leadership. Pair up Ant-Man and Wasp with another low-tech hero or two who won't be missed in the present day. Young Nick Fury could be leading STRIKE or Commandos alongside the Avengers. Drop Alexander Pierce in as a young man doing logistics or something less combat-oriented (he did not strike me as someone who had seen much time in the field.) Zola should have a part as well. Winter Soldier having fun in the shadows?

Bring the team together in the first film called Avengers Initiative. Mission is successful but lurking is Winter Soldier. Cliff-hanger. Sequel. Another mission, some time has passed so team is comfortable. Things eventually end in failure with Jan dying and Pym retiring. Winter Soldier played an indirect role menacing the good guys leading to Jan's death.

Maybe the team doesn't have success and Jan becomes reckless because she desires to be a hero. She puts herself in harms way and gets squished. There are a lot of ideas and directions you can go with SHIELD and an early Avengers team.

One big ?? I have is, with Pym being an elder to Tony Stark, there has to be some knowledge of him in Stark's world. Maybe Tony knows about Pym already but considers him another older scientist in the world and doesnt know about his Ant Man tech, which is actually as amazing as Tonys arc reactor tech.
