Microsoft Windows Virus - April 1st attack

OK...I will explain.
The Worm...or Virus...is not a hoax...I have seen and dealt with it personally.

The Payload which is supposed to come out on April 1st, may be minimal...but may not...this whole ordeal is a precaution.

Right, I ran it the whole way through, and it seems like I'm clean. The application closes very quickly after the scan is done, but I THINK I caught a glimpse of "0 - No Infection found" before it closed itself.

Same here, I appear to be clean. But when it does the last part 'Start Scanning System', once its finished it just flashes that it has done so and the program closes so quick you can't even see what it says. Is this normal?

I had the same thing for my laptop.

I just ran the program again and I managed to take a screendump of the window before it closed. It read something along the lines of "No viruses or threats removed", so I presume I must be clean.

Wow. I read through this thread and it scares me the number of people who use computers, yet pretty much don't know anything about them, or how to protect them.

I mean, if you're doing anything on your computer that requires you to go online and log into something, you're putting yourself and your information at risk. And you should know at least the basics. And if you're doing things like paying bills, or your computer has sensitive information on it, knowing this stuff is essential.


Maybe the Hype needs a sticky Intro to Computers thread that explains the basics of how computers and operating systems work in simple terms. (I was thinking we had one.) And it'll talk about how things like virus work/spread, and how to protect systems. Because hackers and virus writers thrive on the ignorance of typical computer users.

That's me, and I've tried to understand computers before, but it's not something I can do. They just don't make sense to me. I know some of it is because I really don't like or trust computers, but it's cyclical in that way because I don't like or trust them because I can't understand them.

Seriously though, this is something everyone should know about. It'll make your computing experience so much safer. If anyone's got any questions about how things work, they shouldn't be afraid to ask.

You do realize there are MAC viruses...

Generally...they dont waste their time on Macs because there are not enough of them,

Yeah, I consider myself pretty safe cos I'm running Linux but it doesn't stop me scanning me system every so often. I usually just pick up Windows viruses of other people though.

Well if you have the virus now, it doesn't matter if you have your comp on or off that day, once it goes off, you're screwed.

The virus is like a seed, or more like a time bomb waiting to explode.

I could understand for years people saying that Macs are safer cause, like you said, not many people had them. But now with Mac becoming popular and Microsoft becoming un-popular it'll soon be the other way. lol.

The scan was probably designed only to find Cornflicker.


Avast found other dangerous things. But they'll be no harm in you running the scan again.

I wish it were as easy as just turning off your computer the night of March 31st, then keeping yourself occupied during the next day. Then turn it on later that night

Ok, jokes aside, those worried about not seeing the results of the scan, can do this:

Put the f-downadup.exe file in an easy to remember location, open the command line, and use DOS commands to find it and run it. that way the windows remains open, with the results. Other, maybe easier way, is to create a shortcut for the f-downadup.exe file, and before running the shortcut, open the properties dialog box, go to the second tab (Program) and uncheck 'close window when program ends' at the bottom. I think those are the correct names in the english version, since I'm using spanish windows. Also, I'm not sure, but I think it is the same in XP/Vista (if not, it's pretty similar)
