Morrison's Multiversity

I haven't been keeping up with Multiversity since Society of Superheroes but the guidebook was pretty damn amazing. Morrison seamlessly incorporated the profiles of each earth into the main narrative and it was very cool to see.

Took the liberty of scanning the History of the Multiverse section of the last issue for those who are avoiding this awesome series for one reason or another

Andy Kubert would had been perfect for this, but Jim Lee's art is pretty good. I love the fact Hitler thinks Superman is send from the future by Nazis, that's exactly what he would think AND it draws parallels to Red Son.

I genuinely hate Jim Lee's crappy visual storytelling skills. I hope Morrison at least managed to get the best out of him in that regard.

I liked Mastermen. It's funny seeing Overman dealing w/ these crazy women in his life and Hitler screaming on a toilet is one of the best things I've seen in a comic in a long long while.

Dat Final Crisis reference though :word:

Also since it's obvious Lord Broken was the bad influence on Earth-10 I guess it was another Gentry member responsible for the **** storm on Earth-4. I'm gonna have to re-read Pax Americana again. Hell freak it this gives me another excuse to re-read the entire series up till now yet again.

Is there a reason he couldn't be responsible for both?

That's true.

It just seems that thematically there has been one member corrupting the bleed and by proxy also the respective earths or settings of each title for each one shot.

S.O.S. = The Corrupted Nix Uotan
The Just = Dame Merciless
Thunderworld Adventures = Intellectron
Multiversity Guidebook = Hellmachine
Mastermen = Lord Broken

With them all collectively taking Earth-7 for a ride in Multiversity #1

That's why I'm like

Pax Americana = ???

I thought there were only like 4 Gentry people. I'm obviously going to have re-read the series once it finishes, because I feel like I have either missed or totally forgotten almost all of that first issue.

There were originally 5 members and Nix Uotan made 6.

I'm guessing then Demogorgunn was responsible for the events in Pax by process of elimination. He had a direct & significant influence in different ways on multiple people. From the President to the Vice President. From Sarge Steel to Peacemaker and Blue Beetle & The Question. Though it's arguable that he also influenced the stuff in the Earth-20 issue because of Doc Faust's zombie horde but that also could've been a double team by him and Nix Uotan.

In any case Ultraa Comics is going to be a really interesting mind**** since it's apparent that all individual members have already played their part in each chapter of the series. Who will be the one that corrupts the events in Earth-33? you the reader?

Especially since the popular opinion amongst those who are really reading into the story seems to be that the general idea is that each original member of the Gentry is already a metaphor for a DC creative or exec.

Dame Merciless = Diane Nelson
Hellmachine = Dan DiDio
Lord Broken = Jim Lee
Demogorgunn = Geoff Johns
Intellectron = Grant Morrison

DC readers wield a creative influence over the DCU in their own way traditionally as well. So it's a very Morrisonian thing to do.

The abrupt end was disappointing, but Mastermen was still really great.

I'll need to re-read earlier issues and catch up ones I missed, because I honestly forgot how many Gentry there were.

The series with all it's disparate elements is really starting to come together now.

If there's one thing I think it really has accomplished is the potential for the rest of the DCU. I really want to see some more media for these other Earths. Imagine an RPG video game where you play as the murderous terrorists Freedom Fighters for the lost American Dream whilst being hunted by a Nazi Superman on Earth-X. Or I could easily read an ongoing of the Earth 4 Watchmen/Charlton characters, or Earth 5's Captain Marvel, or Earth 20s pulp goodness.

Well, you had me until this.

Yeah...sorry, I just don't really buy a lot of that interpretation of Morrison's work. Like how people were relating certain figures to certain writers with Final Crisis (Dark Monitor was supposedly Alan Moore and Nix was Geoff Johns, I think? Or maybe Morrison himself, something like that). Just feels like it's too reaching. As long as you can make it work in argument form, that's all that matters, but I don't subscribe to it personally. The rest of your stuff, though, I like.

This is probably a stupid question but is there a TBP with all of Morrison's Multiversity out?

The series isn't done in singles, yet. Hardcovers and TPBs are released after the singles of a series is out. The Hardcover will come first, then the TPB. DC is somewhat inconsistent with how quickly they get those things out. They are usually pretty good about getting Hardcovers out fairly quick after a series finishes, but softcover can sometimes be a very long wait, although not always.

About to start The Just. Loving this so far. Really getting into Morrison lately. Have just about everything he's done. Had to pick up Nameless #2 today too.

Funny thing is this just came straight from the horse's mouth just this week:

MCD: Is that why the Gentry are ill-defined and nebulous? To make them the larger notion of an evil force?

GM: Yeah, absolutely. As far as they’re ill-defined, they’re quite well-defined in that they’re called the mastermind archetype, the femme fatale archetype, all taken to certain demonic limits.

I’ve already seen some commentators who thought they represented comic book critics, and some commentators who thought the Gentry represent DC Comics, and other people think they represent something quite different. That was quite deliberate. I wanted to see if these characters to be able to stand in for almost anything.

And Ultra’s about that. Ultra’s about confronting…what is intellectually evil in our real world? What is an idea that we all don’t want to think?

Ah well, I guess that's sort of in line with how he's mentioned he likes to make gaps in stories just so people will fill them in (not 100% the same, but the same line of reasoning). Like I said, as long as you can make an argue for it, it doesn't matter what others think in the end.

[blackout]I'll never give in to the whole Final Crisis thing, though. I'll take that to my grave as stubbornly as possible :o[/blackout]

Anyone read Ultra Comics yet?

I thought it was a little confusing and perhaps too self aware for its own good. Maybe if I read it a second time the experience will be better.
