Mortal Kombat 2021

Trailer in Feb ?? comes too late. What did they do during all these delays?

Two months before release seems to be their thing now with this HBO Max streaming thing. I mean, they just released the Godzilla vs Kong trailer which comes out in March.

My general understanding is for streaming releases they don't like to release trailers or footage far apart from release because it apparently kills the social traffic on the film/show.

I don't necessarily get it, but whatever. Seems insane we have to wait until February for a film release that's happening in April.

I’m not sure if I totally buy that. I mean, shows like Stranger Things usually get a trailer that’s way in advance. Now, it might just be that some shows like that are phenomena and advance promotion works in their favor. But I also wonder if its simply a case of prioritizing a few things and just letting everything else fare for itself.

WB honestly could build a whole cinematic universe around MK imo. A Shaolin Monks flick with Liu Kang and Kung Lao. A Special Forces flick with Sonya, Jax, Kabal and Kano. A Fire and Ice flick with Scorpion and Sub Zero. Raiden being the Nick Fury of it all.

If I could, I even would've done a Raid/Dredd inspired Johnny Cage flick where he's a washed up actor with a drug problem that has to fight his way out of a high rise slum.
I think you're onto something there.

If not a cinematic universe definitely some shows on HBO Max. I think a series about the Lin Kuei (spelling) both Sub-Zero brothers, Smoke, Sector, Cyrax with the rivalry with Scorpion and his clan.

shaolin Monks would be good they can introduce Kensei, Bo Ray Chan (think I got that right).

An Outworld show would be awesome! More backstory on Shao Khan, Shang Tsung, Kitana, Mileena, etc oh the possibilities!

Yeah I think they need to embrace the “team” aspect of MK and avoid focusing too much of these movies on one central character. I suppose you always have to have one “lead” but with such a huge group to pull from, I think MK could have more of a shared focus. And then you could do spin-offs of some of the more popular characters.

I gotta' admit, I hope they don't focus too much on this Cole Turner character. Its characters like Raiden, Scorpion, Sun Zero, Kitana, Mileena that I'm interested in seeing.

I'd certainly be up for a shared universe style of films, but I don't think we'll ever be lucky enough to get that, simply because I don't think the audience is large enough.

There should be no need for a singular focus on any character here, not when you can have ensemble films like the Avengers where the load is shared between characters.

An actual trailer would have been better, but this was still a nice suprise to wake up to. I just hope they don't keep teasing us like this each week with tiny snippets of new footage, but I have to say the little bits we have gotten so far do look promising, especially the shots of Sub-Zero.

This movie definitely doesn't look cheap either.

Is Hanzo blocking two swords with his ARM? Okay that’s badass.

EDIT: Okay, looking at it a little closer it looks like he has a dagger or maybe a katana himself. Either way, still cool.

And that shot of Sub-Zero is 10/10.

For all my reservations I still want there to be hope, there's some nice looking visuals, but also some troubling things like Kano's missing face plate and what has been rumoured about the plot.
