Mortal Kombat 2021

I'm not convinced it did. Unless there's data out there proving people were subbing to HBO Max just to watch the movie.

I think I may be coming from a different point of view. When I say I think it helped I mean I think people watched it because they already have HBO Max and gave it a watch because there is really no risk in checking out a movie the you have little to no interest in. I completely agree that MK21 probably didn't move the subscription needle.

I don’t know what a sequel would do. They had a “tournament” without having one. Goro is dead. We got our Sub-zero and Scorpion fight. The remaining characters like Sonja and Jazz are as interesting as drywall. And Shang Tsung is laughable. No way I’d buy him as a fighter.

Johnny Cage?

I don't see how you can go forward without at least some form of soft reboot and a new creative team. They screwed with lore to the point it affects any sequel going forward and the fighting and acting were so bad that I would not trust any other entry in the series from the same people.

Major exaggerating going on here.

Acting was so bad? It was absolutely fine for a video game adaptation. It wasn’t even horrible acting either. Fighting was good, just the editing was off. And they can easily make a sequel with what they set up.

If you have to come up with an excuse like "fine for a..." or something like that then you're inherently admitting you don't fully believe it was good. Otherwise you wouldn't be making the excuse.

I'm not expecting the world, just a fun movie with good fights, serviceable acting and story. Following this movie with the same lore and creative team is like asking for more Resident Evil movies.

And I thought it was a very fun movie that made me laugh a lot, serviceable acting and story. Yup it was serviceable for a Mortal Kombat lol. It’s literally a video game. I’m not sure what ppl are looking for if you’re actually complaining about acting. There wasn’t anything embarrassing acting wise unlike the 90’s movies. So what’s the problem?

The 95 movie KNEW it was campy and went along with it, the buzz around this new one was that it would finally take MK seriously and do right by its fans, so the acting was horrible for something that tried to have some dramatic stake but failed miserably at doing soon.

The new one didn’t take itself seriously..

...yeah, that's the point. Everyone surrounding the movie said that it was gonna be brutal and dark like the games and instead it was dumb and boring. They tried to add "drama" to it but had such poorly written characters with awful performances that it fell flat.

The 95 movie knew what it aimed to be and didn't try to be anything else.

The original 95 movie was a lot of fun that was sadly never matched by the sequel. Annihilation is the only film this competes with.

People still quote Cary Tagawa's Shang Tsung to this day and he has reprised his role in a couple of different continuities, much to fans delight. Robin Shou, Linden Ashby and Christopher Lambert all did a good job at entertaining fans and making us care about the characters, whereas Ludi Lin is a vacant block of wood and Lewis Tan has a charisma defecit in this movie. The new MK is basically the Josh Lawson show and some guys who can't act.

Maybe it’s because I never read any interviews going in...so I expected a dumb fun video game movie. And that’s what I got.

I watched this movie finally. I went into it with low expectations so here are my final thoughts.

Mortal Kombat 1995 is a gem in my opinion and still enjoy watching that occasionally.

Mortal Kombat 2021 gave me very similar feels to the GI Joe films...... What do I mean by that? In GI Joe, the saving grace in my opinion was the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow scenes. They stole the show, they kept me entertained in what would have been otherwise a lackluster film without them.
Subzero and Scorpion stole the show! Even with Scorpion barely in the film, his presence was known and that opening was FIRE as was the final battle.
However, I was hopeful after the epic opening it was going to carry the film but I was let down after discovering it was going to take while for the film to pick back up again.
While watching the film I felt it was very easy to pick out where they spent large amounts of budget and where they were either running low on budget or had to move money over to other areas.
The dragon mark as the "chosen one" was a cool new idea but lacked making any real sense..... Cole was born with it because of his link to Scorpion, ok cool. Scorpion also had the mark... ok cool. But then they say if you kill someone with the mark you get the mark, yet, Scorpions mark never left him, perhaps because Bi-Han already had a mark perhaps? But Kano killed someone for his mark, Sonya killed him for her mark........ The idea is there but seemed to be confusing as to how it actually works.
Sonya getting her powers instantly? made no sense... Girl Power? ok cool, but still made no sense.
Didn't care much for Shang Tsung. This actor didn't have the charisma that the 1995 actor had.
Goro went out like a B!tch (I guess he kind of did in the 1995 film as well but he felt more threatening in that film after squashing other fighters). I was annoyed at this Liu Kang... I didn't find him likeable and in fact found him a bit annoying.
Cole Young. I know there was a lot of negative comments on this new character. For me, I actually liked him. I liked the Scorpion connection, I liked the power, I just liked him in general. Perhaps it was made easier for me to accept and like him when I quickly realized that the Liu Kang in this film was going to be nothing like Robin Shou was in the 1995 film.
Pre-tournament.... ok cool. Shang Tsung wants to cheat... ok cool. Raiden " I cannot interfere" then later, "I'm interfering" ok cool..... A lot of out and back things didnt make much sense to me.

Overall, yes I enjoyed the film. It had several things I really enjoyed and several things I was not a fan of. I enjoyed the film enough to hope it gets the franchise that its hopeful for as I'd definitely like to see more and where the story and characters go from here. Hope they are able to clean up the story telling more and give some clarity to some of the very confusing plot points from this film.

I watched the film again recently and still feel pretty much the same way as my previous comment.

Meh, I do feel there's a haze of nostalgia around the 95 flick. There's a lot that I still like, but there are also things that haven't aged well. I'd still rewatch that before I watched this new one for sure, but it really isn't much better.

The original sucks. People got their nostalgia glasses on. This new one isn’t great either but it has better effects, acting, a more appropriate tone.

Lol you're in the minority on this one.

The original sucks but it was enjoyable AND memorable. The new one sucked and it was dull and boring.

Better acting from whom? Kano? Maybe Sonya? They were the only two with any personality. Liu, Shang Tsung, Johnny, and Lambert in the original had more charisma and charm than anyone in this trash pile. The original was a mediocre movie overall but it was at least enjoyable. I liked it then and I still appreciate it for what it was. MK 21 is a movie where you can tell they were just throwing **** at a wall and for whatever reason, only the nastiest, liquidy diarrhea stuck.

I laughed out loud way more in the new one. Kano was hilarious. Therefore it was more enjoyable. The actors who played Sub Zero, Scorpion, Sonya and Kano were all better actors.

Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada are good actors... in other things. Aside from the opening sequence, they barely do anything here. I’ll agree that they were better than the guys who played them in the original but they were background characters there. This movie weirdly centered itself on their conflict and yet it didn’t even explain said conflict and neither of them were in it all that much. Somehow that’s worse to me than making them stepping stones like in the original.

Think this is only for the UK, but the box art is awesome!
