Mortal Kombat 2021

I always thought Iko would be a great Kung Lao

Gadot, Yung and Mizuno all look the part.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Mortal Kombat' Reboot Interested In Joel Edgerton As Kano; Character List Update - That Hashtag Show

That Hashtag Show has also obtained an updated character list for the movie:
COLE TURNER – A washed up boxer that still puts up a good fight. He loves his daughter Emily and will do anything to protect her. He is recruited to fight in Mortal Kombat and turns out to have a mysterious upbringing.

EMILY – Cole’s 12-year-old daughter who is already a skilled boxing trainer. She proves to be tougher than she looks.

KANO – The large, rugged Australian ex-special forces turned merc-for-hire wanted by Interpol for arms dealing and drug running. He’s killed a lot of people yet still has a goofy attitude.

LORD RAIDEN – The Thunder God leader of the humankind’s contestants in Mortal Kombat. He oversees their training for the tournament.

SONYA BLADE – The tough blonde dressed in military gear and ready to become a stronger champion.

JACKSON “JAX” BRIDGES– With “Arms like cannons” he recruits Cole to the Mortal Kombat tournament.

LIU KANG – A Shaolin warrior from the White Lotus society that has the ability to throw fireballs.

KUNG LAO – A stoic warrior monk who throws his hat like a deadly frisbee.

SUB-ZER0 – The ice ninja with deadly eyes hidden behind a gruesome mask.

MILEENA – The female Outworld assassin dressed in leather armor and wielding deadly sais.

SHANG TSUNG – The ageless Outworld general that oversees the tournament and it’s fighters.

Hope we see Johnny, Scorpion, and other characters! Don’t really like the idea of an original character as the lead!

Joel Edgerton as Kano would be just awesome!

Cole Turner? No Scorpion? What

At least Mileena will be in it... if this scoop is accurate, that is.

Wrong kind of Asian. Kung Lao and Liu Kang are Chinese.

EDIT: I am Asian and of the same ethnicity as Iko.

I thought "Cole Turner" was a stand-in for Johnny Cage.

Will be shameful if Scorpy is not included.

Then again, maybe Johnny, Scorpion, and Goro will appear as Russo said, "The original seven are important."

Liu Kang was originally portrayed by a Korean-American.
Iko definitely fits Kung Lao to a tee in all the roles he's played.

Mike Moh and Ludi Lin for Liu Kang and Kung Lao respectively.

I’m all for someone who looks like me getting roles in big Hollywood productions but that still doesn’t change the fact that Iko is not Chinese.

Maybe it doesn’t matter to someone who’s not Asian but I find it funny when Hollywood thinks the different ethnicities of Asia are interchangeable.

WB is not going to sign off on this. Just not gonna happen. But they will sign off on a Peter Pan remake with pop music and a caucasian Tiger Lily.

I don't care which B/T/Lollywood star ends up having to pull a Dhallywood.
Like with OG Liu Kang, it's acting.

I am Asian (Indian), and I understand your views
However, it is Hollywood and not even Europeans are played by their same ethnicity most of the time.
Hell, Hollywood has a habit of changing Asian characters to white - The Ancient one in Dr. Strange was originally a Tibetan man changed to white female.
I think there should be some wiggle room to have different Asians play an Asian role.
Pus, I suggested it more due to Iko martial arts performances in the Raid.

At least OG Liu Kang was in the same ballpark. Like you, Hollywood doesn’t care/can’t tell the difference between Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

If the role just calls for “Asian”, go right ahead. I’m having a hard time believing Hollywood can’t find two actors/martial artists of Chinese descent to play Chinese martial artists in 2019.

Liu Kang was also apparently supposed to be Japanese at one point. I actually can tell the difference.
Unless there's some roundabout rationale for how Ho-Sung Pak being Korean-American means he's closest to the Bruce Lee inspiration, it's still really about pretending to be a fictional character that knows martial arts.
As long as you look and can act the part. Iko Uwais qualifies for Kung Lao.
Tony Jaa or Joe Taslim for Liu Kang.
The most recognizable action stars of Chinese descent are way too old now.

Yeah, I had forgotten about the "main character is an OC" aspect. Sigh. You've got a truckload of characters who are full of personality, why would you use an outright OC?

Beats me. The fact that the people behind the movie don't trust the real Mortal Kombat characters to be able to carry the Mortal Kombat movie can't possibly be a good sign.

I saw a script review on youtube and they said at the end of the script its revealed Cole Turner is Scorpion. I dont know if they changed it but that was the direction the film was going in.

God, no.

You want a case of whitewashing? :D

Scorpion, his real name is Hanzo Hasashi.

I've read the rumors before about an original character. It better just be an old bs rumor now!

Not the current script. That script review is a version that has been thrown around some parts as the one they are going to use, but nah. It even says first draft on the cover, man. lol

I hope that rumor is BS because an MK movie doesn't need any original characters, not when there's such a wide variety to choose from!

Also they better have Mileena in the film for more than 2 minutes this time! She's MK's best female character (sorry Sonya/Kitana, but it's true)!
