Mortal Kombat 2021

I haven't watched it yet, but I remember a video where Keanu Reeves showcases how they filmed a fight scene for Man of Tai Chi with this neat mobile camera right that can seamlessly move and follow along with all the action and get in really close and tight. Like the camera could move and follow along with the actors in the space. It seemed really innovative.
I highly recommend the movie. Keanu himself plays the Villain who's fills the Shang Tsung role. Keanu knows how to shoot martial arts action. I pleasantly surprised.

You called it all.
Well that first 10 min were great! But man, this flick was rough for me to sit though. There's so much to use for storyline, mythos and characters that's evolved through the decades and this is what they went with?

Was really just hoping at the least for this to deliver in energy and fights. But it couldn't even do that. The energy, charm and adventure of the original 95 flick far surpass this. Majority of fights are weak and chopped all over the place with frustrating parallel editing. The choreography outside of the intro and end fight are weak too. Or were just chopped to nothing. There's no pacing here and most battles just kinda flat line without escalating up and down with real tension along with a crazy amount of edits. The fatalities did not hit as hard as they should have, cause I was bored out of my mind. They're also kind of dated fatalities. The games have gone to ridiculous creative lengths to evolve them. So why not go all the way in?

Won't even get into all the wasted potential for characters cause there are bigger issues here. But they throwaway a lot and don't focus on important ones. Gonna assume studio decisions are responsible for the poor editing and sluggish storyline. But I don't know if any of the tone, characters, direction or writing were the way to go here outside of Scorpion.

Hope other MK fans find more to like. Really wanted to enjoy this but I'm actually shocked it's hanging on to that 55% on RT.
I agree 1000%.. I grew up on MK and this movie is a huge letdown all the way.

I don't think the movie was that bad. It is just a very average movie that looks like a b movie. The acting is also questionable, they should have looked for better actors. They felt like cosplay fans trying to act in a movie. I looked up the budget for this and... it looked pretty cheap for a movie that cost 95 million (if that was the real budget).

And it reminded me of those straight to DVD movies back in the 2000s.

And the lead character that isn't even in the videogames....

$95 million was higher than I expected. I thought it was more like $50 million, which I would've believed watching the film.

It does look more like a B-movie production with B-movie level acting. Though again, Hiroyuki Sanada is like clearly putting in effort and giving it his all to make Scorpion this dramatic, tragic figure.

Well, in the event there is a sequel, I would like to emphasize the elements that work so they can maybe focus on that and maybe try to work on the things that did not.

I think they would need a director who can handle both quality acting as well as better action.

So it sounds like Annihilation was MK’s Batman & Robin (a film so awful that it killed the franchise for years) while this movie is its BvS (a crappy, self-important film bogged down by mediocre talent and studio meddling that didn’t live up to expectations).

I often wonder which is worse. A movie so abysmal that everyone involved should be embarrassed of, or a movie that could have been good but misfired on enough crucial elements that it ended up feeling like a monumental failure.

I just finished it. Probably a 5.5/6 out of 10 for me.

Designs were good, Sub Zero was the most entertaining character for me. His fight scenes were great.

What this film really lacked? Charm. It pretty much had no charm to it which is what the OG film had and why its enjoyable even though it's bad.

Very weird choice to bring us into the middle of a story with some of the characters but make Cole the audience surrogate and have this be a glorified MK prequel all at once.

I didnt need to see Jax learn to believe in himself to unlock his muscles. I could care less about Coles family.

With a property like this...you dont start out your first film like this as if you are guaranteed a sequel for the sequel to be MORTAL KOMBAT. Maybe a tv series where you have 12 episodes to build up to everything but not a film.

I refuse to believe that this film had a $95 million budget....the sets were far to bland, didnt look like they did many on location scenes, the special effects...werent that much.

I'm not gonna watch this one based on the reviews. I love MK. I remember being little and my Dad not letting us buy MK2 because it was too gory (I was only like 5 years old when it came out), but we persuaded him by saying you could turn the blood off. So we get the game and turn the blood off and in the FIRST FIGHT against Scorpion, the CPU beats my brother and performs his skull burn fatality. We all just turned and looked at my Dad like "oops!"

Anyway, MK has such a rich story and so many characters to play with and I just can't get past them creating this new character. As if no audience member would have been able to relate to Liu Kang? The 1995 movie (although now dated) just nailed that character as a leader and the "chosen one" so I don't know why they thought he couldn't carry this reboot.

Also Kitana is probably my favourite character and not including her from the offset is a crime.

Ugh I just feel like this is such a wasted opportunity and MK probably won't get another reboot.

I look forward to the YouTube compilation “Mortal Kombat 2021 but it’s everytime Scorpion takes off or puts on his mask.”

seriously, I felt like he spent half his screen time doing that.

This wasn’t terrible, but it was incredibly disappointing. It’s the kinda film where all of the wasted potential is just so clear in every single scene.

The movie fan in me is like “Meh, so so.”
The MK fan in me is weeping lol.
