Those of you who actually like the film should avoid this place and go to the MK subreddit instead. In all fairness,there should be a Mortal Kombat 2021 Positive Reviews thread here like other forums/movies get.

We are getting a sequel to this movie. I for one cant wait to see who they cast as Johnny Cage and hopefully an actual tournament.

MK 2021 in retrospect isnt a perfect movie, yes i think the main issues, even for a lot of people that liked the movie, was that Goro was offed unceremoniously and the Cole should have just been Johnny Cage or make Liu Kang the main protoganist. Besides that, this forum shares a minority opinion that this movie was not good. The RT audience score shows an overwhelmingly positive rating of 86%. I pay no mind to professional critics since they are not in tune with what the general audience appreciate. Especially people who God forbid, lean to conservative values or are religious.

The actual fans and die hards (which you'll find here) are going to be the ones known for repeat viewings. It would be completely ignorant of the studio to remain obtuse towards what they want to see - otherwise they're effectively capping their earning potential at the BO.

I do agree that scene creates a big narrative issue though. We still come out of it not understanding their rivalry at all. Maybe I missed a detail, but seems like they fight to the death just because.

The movie was missing a great deal of interconnective tissue that a seasoned writer/director would normally include. Almost everything we're left with in this has to be taken at face value. Any details we do get are merely surface level crap to lazily allow something to happen.

The subzero brothers are descendants of a race of Outworld cryomancers. Folks from Outworld typically live longer than normal humans, he also works for a sorcerer, his immortality could be how he's paid for his services. There's multiple ways you can MK lore into justification but the filmmakers really shouldn't have expected the audience to do that.

Producers were so tired to explain why SubZero lives since 16th century. and why he sides with Shang Tsung whereas he belongs to Lin Kuei over the movie. I mean, non MKfans wont understand this movie because McQuoid is too lazy to explain some details

Well, in games he killed Hanzo, but never kills children. Quan Chi murdered Hanzo's wife and son. Bi-Han is just a neutral Lin Kuei assassin he would never kill women/children. He spared Sareena's life before MK1
In Legend anime, Quan Chi killed all them by disguise himself as Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero wasnt responsible at all in Shiray Ryu massacre.
In Movie reboot, Bi-han is an ******* who doesnt hesitate to kill children.

Ninja clans are a thing in present day?

In games they live in present day. Hanzo was killed 2 years before MK1.

Even MKfans know it was never stated in games that cryomancers like Bi-Han, Kuai Liang, Frost, live longer than humans.

To introduce young Sub-Zero in sequels, they'll have no choice but tell Kuai Liang also ages slowly like his brother

After finishing the first season of Invincible and seeing just how wildly violent that show can get(the series finale was insane!). I do wonder if Mortal Kombat would be best served as a adult animated series on a streaming service. I wouldn’t mind getting HBO Max’s first original anime series through the MK IP.

they had a chance to portray goro's lair in live action finally.

i remember how creepy that ish looked back in 92 on the arcade screens.

but nah...they had goro bust out cole's barn/ toolshed to fight him in his backyard.

Speaking of the prince of pain (that's his nickname in the Malibu Comics from the 90s); I've timed his appearances in both this one and the original film.

2021: We hear the gate open, hear his name, and see his shadow nearly 1hr 6 mins into the film runtime, and that is all the build up he gets with Shang announcing that he's the prince of Shokans.

1995: See his hand at near 29 minutes mark, hear him growl. See his shadow a minute later and he scares Johnny Cage, and then we see him disgusted by Kano, he scares the underground leader and we learn more about him as a character. 56 minutes we see Shang finally allowing his secret weapon to cut loose, he knocks down 19 opponents, and we see him actually fighting and finishing his twentieth opponent.

In build up and character, 1995 movie wins with ease. In the fight we see his defeat you can give or take either version.

2021: Defeated by useless new character after activating plot armor, but Goro was terrifying and deadly, he would have killed Cole if not for his wife axing the side of Goro's belly. A quick fight, but I will give this movie credit for making him nearly winning. His fight happened nearly three minutes after his lame introduction.

1995: There is talk about the terror, Johnny talks about volunteering for a fight, it happens, and it's the greatest joke battle ever made that turned terror to trifle without second guessing itself, and it's one of the most memorable most fun battle scenes that are always pleasant to watch, with some especially memorable dialogue.

At least 2021 didn't make his battle a joke, but it's not as enjoyable as the older one. So I guess 1995 one wins for me.

I forgot Tan was in Deadpool 2.

To be fair; he was probably used to be forgotten after a quick laugh.

I am definitely coming around to it. I would love to tune in each week and see some mortal kombat. I suppose it’s been pretty successful so they might even want to do both.

I'd definitely be down for an animated MK series as long as its on par with the quality of Scorpion's Revenge which is still IMO the best MK movie we have ever gotten which is actually sad considering how much more can be done with this franchise and yet they still haven't cracked it in live action.

The potenital is still there for something great, but man I really hope this doesn't end up being one of those franchises that Hollywood just can't get right for some reason.

The Scorpion thing makes more sense because of his kunai/whip thing. It's like a Scorpion's stinging tail. And it would make sense if among an elite clan of ninja warriors, Scorpion was his nickname. Like in Demon Slayer, the elites of the Demon Slayer Corps., the Hashira are given nicknames after their special abilities and techniques. Kyojuro Rengoku is the Flame Hashira. Shinobu is the Insect Hashira, etc.

But in the MK2021 movie, it looks like Hanzo simply improvises that weapon in the opening scene. His wife was using it as a gardening tool, then he grabs it and ties it to a rope to use against the other assassins.

Also, Scorpion and Sub-Zero's armor made them look more like samurai, not ninjas.

Hahahahaha I didn’t think about that. Cole literally had plot armor. I seriously wonder if Russo and McQuoid were brainstorming about what power they were going to give him and one of them was like, “Hmmm so we have this useless character who can’t win a fight but we need him to somehow survive a battle with the all-time champion. If we screw it up, people will accuse us of giving Cole plot armor. OH MY GOD THAT’S IT! We’ll give him plot armor! He’ll just grow armor when his life is in danger so he can’t die!”

You know, I do have to wonder: why *did* they set the original Sub-Zero/Scorpion fight centuries in the past? By which I mean, what narrative or thematic purpose did that serve? Like, if you want Hanzo's kid to be an adult and character in the current story, fine, that justifies having it in the past. . . like, 20-30 years in the past. Not centuries.

Was someone insistent on having the fight in a Classical Medieval Japanese Farm Set, and someone else was equally insistent that such could absolutely positively not exist anywhere in the modern era? Did someone decide "must explain why ninjas, so set it in the ninja era", and just forgot that they were going to have ninjas in the present, anyway?

The only thing in this movie that I really liked was Kung Lao’s hat fatality. That was cool as ****. The rest of it was resoundingly meh. From acting and fight choreo to score and cinematography. As someone who hasn’t ever played the games, I thought this had a lot of potential to be loud, dumb, cheesy fun. Shame it was so dull.

While I am a Mortal Kombat fan, I'm bit iffy on all the backstory details and specifics of Scorpion and Sub-Zero and when exactly their feud took place. The Scorpion wiki says their clans existed in the modern day and in the 20th century, Scorpion was killed by Sub-Zero. Granted, they didn't really spell all these things out in the early 1990s games. I mean they were really just bloody barebones fighting games with only the barest of narratives.

I'm assuming they felt it was better to not have to explain how you have modern ninja assassin clans in the modern day and it looks better in feudal Japan.

But is that accurate that in the original canon, the first Scorpion and Sub-Zero lived in the modern day their clans were feuding in the 20th century?

G.I. Joe/Suicide Squad style, a soft reboot sequel with a whole new creative team - doesn’t mean the sequel will be any good either. The opening weekend shows the popularity which they’ll want to capitalize on.

This movie was like someone at a party asking if you want some chips, you get excited then eat one and realise its plain flavoured chips not BBQ. This movie was just very plain. Nothing felt eventful or epic in scope. It felt fan made to me.

It opens on Shirai Ryu clan's massacre
Sort of MK1 background. Shang Tsung's minions VS Raiden's warriors before Kahn's enter
Jax loses his arms
Sonya fight Reptile
Scorpion seeking to avenge his family and clan
MK1 roster including some characters from MK2 MK3 MK4 MK5

Seems sequel of both will focus on the same plot : Shao Kahn comes to earth

Based on how this movie played out, I think you are jumping ahead on Shao Khan coming to earth. Movie 2 still has to resolve the threat of Shang Tsung. Although, based on this movie, we won't actually get to the tournament till movie 3....
