Furious 7 director James Wan is stepping in to produce the MORTAL KOMBAT reboot currently underway at New Line and Broken Road.
The in-demand director of The Conjuring and Insidious: Chapter 2 has been brought over to uppercut some new life into the previously stunted picture.
With his dark sensibility, ability to orchestrate action and scares, and a wildly successful financial track record, Wan seems to be the perfect fit for what the studio has described as a departure from the mythology, with darker, brutally real martial arts.
The script, being penned by Mortal Kombat: Legacy writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham, centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as Mortal Kombat.
Isnt Legacy Season 3 in production ?
Genuinely hoping this happens. Considering the popularity of the Hunger Games, I'm convinced there's a good movie to be made out of Mortal Kombat. It is basically your hero's journey/fantasy-action-adventure movie (with a minority lead) about good vs. evil, except it revolves around a martial arts tournament. Develop the characters and you're good to go!
These types of movies worked better in the era of van Damme and Seagal. Nowadays people want to see cgi action not martial arts.
Does that protagonist description fit anyone in the Mortal Kombat universe? Is it supposed to be like a gamer insertion thing? Like some random kid gets drawn into the MK universe from his perspective?
As much as I have a nostalgic love for the original film I'm not convinced this franchise will ever truly work as a film series.
It can be the ultimate blockbuster movie if done accurately/right enough and depending on production scale. It will have tons of The Raid type of fighting action, epic settings with different worlds and characters, some adventure and a strong superhero vibe.
It could be like The Raid,Avengers,Thor,The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix films all in a huge blender and pours a fantastic smoothy. Solid CGI,Quality Costumes,Profesionally done sets and a decent enough cast with top fight cherography and stunts could do wonders!
