Well, initially I was excited at the prospect of a new MK film, but it really sounds like it's going to be like Rebirth where it's stupidly realistic and that's just not Mortal Kombat to me.

I think I'm just not gonna get my hopes up for another Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li style disaster and if it turns out I'm wrong I'll eat a slice of humble pie.

its still to early to know if this new film will be anything like his concept trailer of the mini webseries.

i think the Studio KNOWS we like all the mysticism the game offers so i doubt, i really hope so at least, they will keep it in.

i think these characters should be the main focus of the film:

Liu Kang
Raiden
Shang Tsung
Sonya
Johnny Cage
Sub Zero
Kano
Scorpion
Kitana
Mileena
Shao Kang

side characters but w/ significant roles:
Reptile
Jax
Goro
Kung Lao
Baraka

i think all these characters can be easily incorporated into a 2 hour film

other characters like Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke, etc. can be saved for the sequels depending on how this first film does

How about this guy for Liu Kang

This is Han from Tokyo Drift & Fast Five in Ninja Assassin. The Fast & The Furious fan base loves him & has the look here

Rain wouldn't be a bad choice for Kang.

yeah, the guy from Ninja Assassin would be great for Liu Kang. he's definately got the look and knows martial arts.

That's Rain (Jeong Ji-Hoon). Sung Kang plays Han, but he also was in Ninja Assassin.

he is not that good at English imo

i like yune better since he actually knows martial arts and speaks English fluently since he was born in DC

rain was taught it remember he was a pop star in korea

so what if the dude isnt good with english maybe they can make the character not english speaking. Or wrost come dub over him.

I dunno,...it's hard to make an effective ensemble movie without one main guy to root for..

Why I think a multiple story arc would work best is that Mortal Kombat really isn't about any one particular character, each character has their own journey, each of which could be it's own film, so why not do that except scaled down? If you go the multi story arc route you can cover maybe 5-6 characters, say Liu Kang, J. Cage, Sonya, Sub-Zero, Kitana, and Shang Tsung for example, each of those mini stories could overlap at various points leading up to the finale. I'm thinking of an Inglouris Basterds type scenario, that film has 4 different stories that all converge at the end, I think something like that could be possible here.

People hated the Chinese version of "Get Over Here" in Legacy

I can see something like that working well. The separate character stories probably would be

Liu Kang

Coming to terms with being the chosen Earth realm champion. Overcoming his fears and being able to defeat Goro.

Johnny Cage

On a mission to proof he has got what it takes to be a world class fighter.

Sonya/Kano

Sonya seeking retribution against Kano for killing her partner. And taking down the Black Dragon.

Sub-Zero/Scorpion

Sub-Zero sent to assassinate Shang Tsung, only Scorpion gets in the way seeking revenge for the death of his family and clan.

All of these charcters stories can get equal time to explore and as JMC said, converge at the climax of the film, when Shang Tsung unleashes his treacherous plan.

Wait who hated it?? It was a flashback to Scorpions life in Japan (not China) and not modern day Spectre Scorp. So for that episode it was rightfully appropriate.

I also wonder if the tournament aspect needs to be gotten rid of.

Maybe the tournament shouldn't be as important. Outside the tournament, we should see certain characters following their own agenda.

well isnt the point of mortal komat the dam tournament?
