Mortal Kombat

I dread watching this film, cause I hate Quan Chi, and he will probably be in it.
Ironically, it's the movie I look forward to seeing the most, more than even Batman v Superman or the Flash.
I went to the CAA screening room to see Shopping. Paul [W.S.] Anderson was an unknown director with this little film. I didn't know anything about it. I was totally blown away with the talent he had in it.
And after this movie, the talent went blowing out the window. :csad:

I dont understand why this is such a hard property to adapt especially with what marvel has been doing and GA accepting all of it. Mortal Kombat is a very popular franchise and could easily be a hit. If its a serious take with some humor thrown in and not too mention you have rich characters with great backgrounds.

Mostly it is because the studios have no clue how to adapt a video game story into a movie without falling on outdated stereotypes, assumptions and their own ignorance. In otherwords, just like anything else they adapt. It's just video games are a harder nut to crack than something as direct as a book or comic book.

James Wan confirms his role as producer of the Mortal Kombat reboot and discusses what attracts him to Mortal Kombat:

http://m.ign.com/articles/2016/08/10/james-wan-says-they-wont-rush-new-mortal-kombat-movie

Wan added, “The key here is to try and do it right. I don't want to rush into it. So right now, we're just trying to take our time to make sure it's heading in the right direction. I think that's more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes.”

As far as what drew Wan to Mortal Kombat, the producer/director remarked, “I love the characters. I think they're such colorful characters. It's such an amazing take on, basically, Enter the Dragon. It's that fantasy version, the video game version, of Enter the Dragon. And in doing so, they ended up creating such interesting characters and I think that is such a cool world to explore. This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that's really fun to play with and so we'll see.”

Don't make Liu Kang evil, I hate that bit in season 2 of Legacy.

Now when it comes to an MK film, do you guys want a more dark and ominous film or more a MCU-esque crowd pleaser?

Yeah, why can't you have both?

I would like it to at least be R-rated. Not everything has to be PG-13.

I would want a new film to have the blood guts and gore.

Hmm, We could have both but I'd also like to see a bit of a deconstruction that explores the idea that MK has become a field for genocide since Shang Tsung's reign over the tournament. Along with playing on the way to characters react to potentially becoming murderers as the tournament goes on. Some can choose to spare lives while others get their hands dirty etc.

However some witty dialogue in between that and some well choregraphed action sequences would be welcome.

If anyone is expecting this to have it's main characters killed throughout the film, will probably be disappointed. This will have a select group of heroes and enemies. Other than the lower tier villains (baraka, reptile perhaps, depending on chosen characters) and red shirt warriors, don't expect many deaths, They aren't going to kill off a Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya type hero, its not guaranteed this will the route they take with its selected earth realm warriors. Now it can still be R rated, and have iconic fatalities, just not to its lead actors, and i truly believe they'll try and snatch up a couple A list actors, Cage the most obvious.

Who said anything about kill off all the heroes?
Not aimed toward anyone in particular, i can always recall people inclined to the belief that an adaptation of this needs to be synonymous with it's character deaths.

Now when it comes to an MK film, do you guys want a more dark and ominous film or more a MCU-esque crowd pleaser?
Something like Deadpool's movie, brutal, 'R' rated, and pleasing.

I Want Feel The Same as i would PLay The Games but yeah The Movie Needs Brutal Rated R and not PG 13

Rated R Fantasy Enter the Dragon with the best fight choreographers in and out of the business.

And no to MCU bordeline camp. I'm not saying it should take itself too seriously, but no self aware slapstick either.

I guess you guy's missed this post? Its' being developed at WB/New Line. They're not going with MCU fam friendly crap with this.

With his dark sensibility, ability to orchestrate action and scares, and a wildly successful financial track record, Wan seems to be the perfect fit for what the studio has described as “a departure from the mythology,” with “darker, brutally real martial arts.”

The script, being penned by Mortal Kombat: Legacy writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham, centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as ‘Mortal Kombat’.

We'll see. Movie hasn't been green lit. Not filming date scheduled. No director yet.

Would Warner Bros. really finance this and allow an R-rating? We'll see.

Of course it hasn't been green lit. No one said it was. That article is from August 2015 talking about Wan and the writers coming on board. So they're probably onto their final screenplay now. And if that's good then we'll hear more about it in the comnig year hopefully.

And New Line are producing it. It's going to be am R Rated MK movie for sure.

There's no way to tell they're on a final screenplay. Feature film reboot of Mortal Kombat has been kicked around for a while.

They probably are looking at the writers involved and depending on how busy a writer is it can be done in months never mind in a year.

Just had a look up of the writers involved:

Oren Uziel who also wrote 'God Particle'- Movie is shooting now

Dave Callaham- Zombieland 2 and Jackpot (Whatever those 2 movies are) is in post Production .

Hopefully New Line gives it a similar budget to the Resident Evil movies so that we can see the creatures and the characters' special abilities done justice without being "too expensive"

I'm like 95% sure they'll grant it an R rating. It's not the kiss of death for franchises anymore.
