MSJ talks Box Office, & GR2 and more.

A sequel does look likely. The good thing about the first Ghost Rider is at least they have the technology for the CGI and origin already done, and can focus more on other things.

But I hope MSJ actually makes a serious GR sequel. I'm hoping for almost a complete reshaping of what he has already done, and although it's unlikely, I want it done for the character's sake and for the credibility of the comic book genre.

Good thing the first GR was already so good

Hopefully Sony and MSJ don't see Ghost Rider's success due to the story and direction of the film.

I ask this to all Ghost Rider fans, how can you say you are content with the way the film turned out. I love the Ghost Rider, and I enjoyed seeing him on screen. I loved certain parts of the film but there is no doubt it could have been done better.

I want the second to be taken more seriously. And don't confuse that with 'realistic', because that's not what I'm saying. I want someone to make a quality film we can be proud to say is a comic book film. I want to feel for these characters and storytelling that drags me in. With this film, it's as if they said "as long as we get the flames and Ghost Rider looking right, the film will be fine".

the only thing i want more of in a sequel is more intense/longer action pieces... not to say this should be one big mindless action fest, but i'd have liked to see more.

keep the humor, because that's the thing that i enjoyed most about the movie.

I want an obscure, grittier and focused sequel with better villain(s). This movie for me made the same mistakes that the SPAWN movie made. I'm glad it was successful, but a comedy ridden Ghost Rider for kids, hopefully will not be what they give us with the sequel.

I really just wanted to make something fun and different, something that didn't take itself too seriously

Well he succeded didnt he. I totally understand it too.

I mean why would you make a movie about a guy who sells his souls to the devil to save his father, then fights evil with a flaming skull to serious?

I see comedy written all over that as well. Good thinking MSJ.

yeah it's nice to have fun at the movies again.

And why does every sci-fi movie nowadays have to be R rated to appeal to us? Back in my day, someone being burned to death, raped, or tortured did not a good movie make. Even so, ghost rider had all that except for the rape.

We've just become so de-sensitized to images of a man's skull burning thanks to star wars that it had little impact.

Its serious content. If you want funny/cheesy with no seriousness an no flaming skulls killing evil people check out the comic jughead.

I agree. While I enjoyed GR, one of the things that kind of dispointed me was that it didn't take itself seriously enough. It lacked the dark and tragic tone of the comics. I didn't feel sympathy for Blaze's plight, as from the way the movie protrayed it to be, he was handling it pretty well. I don't mind if MSJ returns to direct GR2, but I hope he gets someone else to write the script and make the movie with a more dark tone. I'm not saying it should be R, but the movie should've taken itself more seriously.

The studios can never win. Either someone's whining about the films shouldn't be taking themselves so seroiusly like The Hulk, or that films shouldn't be so comic booky...which is ironic.

FINALLY someone else who understands my pain.

I swear back when hulk was released, you couldn't just chill at this board and say how cool you thought it was that Ang Lee took the subject seriously. Everybody would jump on you and say he should have done it like raimi's spidey since back then spidey was the king of all comic films and anything that didn't match it was a waste of film.

So you're right, I'm absolutely convinced most people haven't a scooby clue about what they really want.

"I'm really happy about the success of GHOST RIDER. I really just wanted to make something fun and different, something that didn't take itself too seriously. It's a really weird movie and we didn't know if anybody would even show up in the first place. So the fact that we're breaking records, not just in the U.S., but also around the world, is a real kick. I'd love to do another one. But that's really up to Sony now. I'd like to see what Mephisto has in store for Johnny down the road. Safe to say, that things are going to get worse for Johnny before they get better!"

Nice. Thats my kind of movie... weird movies that try to be something new and different. And that's why GR's doing well.

The movies have been filled with too many sequels and remakes these days. GR got blasted by critics, I think because it broke free from the long running trend of movie sequels so maybe most weren't prepared to have to not use a previous film to judge this first ghost rider film. It's possible.

I half agree with ya Weyseed. It is fun and different, but things can still be that way and still have dialogue that doesn't suck. I'm 20 and I felt embarassed during some parts of Ghost Rider because it had been tailored for mass consumption. I remember thinking "oh, have I just brought my family along to see a movie for kids?". The transformation scene and some GR scenes made me feel better... but those other things still remained.

My point being it still could have broken away from the sequel mould and not made some of the mistakes it did. And please don't think I'm a hater, because I'm not. I give praise where it's due, I only highlight weak points because I want better for the character and fans. But then again I can't really say what people want. Some people love bad films, some people hate great films.

Exactly. If you're going to go this route, you at least have to deliver action. Ghost Rider fails everywhere but the box office (thankfully). I've paid to see it multiple times but only because I want a sequel done right, not because I think it's a great movie.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, Masut. You know it. No matter how hard I try, I can't convince my cousin Lotr's anything more than a bunch of people running around from place to place.

People...:whatever:

I'm very confident in my ability to hone in on what doesn't quite work in movies. I realize a kid won't look at a film the same way an adult will. Someone who's never read a comic in their life and likes to go to broadway shows will not see the film the same way as me, that's for sure. There's a lot of subjectivity involved, which makes discussing films in that sense rather difficult. The technical aspects like how good the cgi is, the logistics of a film... I think those types of things are what everyone usually goes back and forth on, Guard style.

From my point of view, GR holds up as a decent beginning. I didn't expect it to be much more than that since it's just the first one. Most first comic films are decent enough, then become more polished in the sequel. Why does this happen? My guess would be that it's related to that line in batman begins "Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up."

heh... :word:

GR surprised me....much better than I had anticipated....so yeah, I would like to see a sequel made.

I'm all aboard this.
There were a lot of boos at NY ComicCon when Kevin Smith aske if anyone had seen Ghost Rider. he hadn't seen it.He left the subject alone.

I think that the comedic effect in GR works with the movie. Now, if they had a joke around every corner, then it may have been overdoing it. I think that we'll see a sequel soon, and I hope Nic Cage would be back again, since he did write portions of the script for this one, and GR is his favorite Comic Book Character. Thanks for the info :)

A sequel would be good but I'd rather have MSJ working on Preacher as a priority ; one thing was certain in Ghost Rider, he got the western vibe right. :)

i'd rather MSJ not direct another comic book film again. DD was bareable, GR was pretty bad, i don't wanna see what his 3rd comic movie will look like.
