My Newest Comic Hobby!

I liked how New Gods, the books, were put out. In the order they came out originally.
So one book would have Jimmy Olsen, then Orion, then another book, then another book, and then back to Jimmy Olsen.
They put out four books like that,
Imagine if all the big events included the tie ins in this fashion.

Secret Invasion #1, then (I don't know) mighty avengers, then new avengers, then the initiative, then back to Secret Invasion #2.
That way you wouldn't have to search around, just buy book one of Secret Invasion, and you wouldn't miss any of the story.
You would have to buy several books though.

Has anyone done anything like that,
Instead of just all of one title, adding in the tie ins in the order they came out?

Heh, I forgot about this and let it get old. As to your question about how much Ultimate I have, I only have Ultimates Vol. 2 and 2 issues of Ultimates vol. 1. I had to go through a comics purge a few years ago due to finances and unfortunately they got the boot. I'm still rebuilding and that's what's slowing the binding process down. Just to bind isn't bad, it's buying the comics and then getting them bound that's costly.

The closest thing I can think of like that would be things leading into events, like the Road to Civil War trade and the Secret Invasion: Infiltration trade, but even then it was minor, such as just having specific issues with the Elektra Skrull and not the whole arc. That still bugs me. And the Road to Civil War was decent with the Illuminati, then the FF, then Spidey, but there's a lot that happens chronologically between Amazing Spider-Man 329 and 330, such as the New Avengers: Collective arc, the 2nd arc of Young Avengers, and anything else that you see Iron Spidey in prior to Civil War. And since you mentioned that, here's an idea of what my New Avengers/Secret Invasion era looks like after Civil War.

Secret Invasion Vol. 1: World War Hulk
Avengers: The Initiative 1 (1)
She-Hulk 18 (1/2)
Avengers: The Initiative 2-3 (2)
Civil War: The Initiative (Tony and Carol scene)
New Avengers 27-32 (6)
The Incredible Hulk 106 (1)
World War Hulk: Worldbreaker (1)
WWH 1 Cover
WWH: X-Men 1 (1 page flashback)
Initiative 4 (Beginning through "MOVE IT")
Incredible Hulk 107 (Beginning through "I'm starting to hate that kid.")
Iron Man 19 (Beginning through "something's come up')
WWH 1 ("something big" through "I wanna hear you scream")
Iron Man 19 ("Oval Office" page)
Initiative 4 (MVP scene)
WWH 1 ("Puny humans" through Sentry "A word please")
WWH: X-Men 1-3 (" XIFHL: Now" through end of issue 3)
Iron Man 19 ("Belay previous orders" through "And preparing for it")
Initiative 4 ("Spin tech?" through "LOOTERS")
Incredible Hulk 107 ("Later" through "We don't have six seconds")
Iron Man 19 ("I'd hoped this wouldn't prove necessary" through "Good Enough")
WWH 1 ("Looking good folks" through Hulk crushing into Ironman just prior to avengers tower)
Initiative 4 ("I do to protect the world" through "Avengers tower")
WWH 1 (Hitting Avengers Tower through the End)
WWH 2 (Beginning through "just gets him angrier")
Incredible Hulk 107 ("Come on dangit" through the End
WWH 3 (Beginning through "Let's hear it commander Hill")
Iron Man 20
Initiative 5
Incredible Hulk 109 ("It's time for me and my big brain..." through Cho and Rick's soluting)
Incredible Hulk 109 ("Congrats kid" through the End)
Incredible Hulk 110
WWH 3 ("Washington D.C." through End)
WWH 4 (Beginning through "Bzzzrrrzzztt!")
Incredible Hulk 111 ("Now we need to get back to that arena" through "Avoid the giant Monster")
WWH 4 ("Northern Vermont" Through "Hello Old Friend")
Incredible Hulk 111 ("What is that?" through "It's just the Sentry")
WWH 5 ("KWAGLOOOM" through "VJWAAAAAM")
Indredible Hulk 111 ("Are they coming back" through "kiss his beautiful green...")
WWH 5 ("Ben Grimm.. what's your Sentry doing?" through End)
Mighty Avengers 6 (Final page with Spider-Woman & Elektra Skrull)
Initiative 6-7 (2)
Initiative Annual 1 (1)
New Warriors 4 (1/2) (page with Zodiac/Initiative intro, then the next Zodiac scene through the End)
Initiative 8-13 (6)

Notes: I thought about having this just a separate volume and not tied in with the Secret Invasion volumes but it had to fall between some key Invasion lead ups, such as the Skrull Reveal, so it had to be included. And it's still Green Men invading from Space, so it fit. It also had to go because of the two Initiative tie-in's, and due to those tie-ins, I ran the rest of their first arc after it to keep their story together. It reads best in one sitting than broken apart so I really wanted them together. I hate how the first 5 issues are separated and then it comes back to issue 6 but it's the best layout and I think it works well this way.

Secret Invasion Vol. 2: The Infiltration
New Avengers 33-34 (2)
Mighty Avengers 7 (1/2) (After "I Know" through end)
New Avengers 35 (1)
Mighty Avengers 8-11 (4)
New Avengers 36-37 (2)
New Avengers Annual 2 (1)
New Avengers 38 (1)
Thunderbolts 116-121 (6)
Spider-Man: OMD 1-4 (4)
Young Avengers Presents 1, 3-6 (5)
Illuminati 1-4 (4)
New Avengers 40 (Beginning - "Carry On.")
New Avengers 44 (Beginning - End)
New Avengers 40 (Galactus - "As It Is Written")
Mighty Avengers 16 (Beginning - End)
New Avengers 40 ("Skrull World Tarnax X" - End)
New Avengers 42 (Beginning - "For The Glory")
Mighty Avengers 15 (1) (Beginning through "Aim Higher")
Mighty Avengers 12 (1)
New Avengers 42 (1) ("New York City Weeks Later" - End)
New Avengers 45 (1) (minus 1st page)
Initiative 14 (Beginning - "He Loves You Brother")
Mighty Avengers 15 (1) (Ultron discussion - End)
Mighty Avengers 7 (1/2) (Beginning through "We can't trust anyone" "I Know")
Mighty Avengers 13 (1) (Beginning - End)
Illuminati 5 (1)

Notes: This is a fun volume. I started with all the SI lead up in New and Mighty Avengers, filled in some other key storyline deals such as the Thunderbolts and Spidey OMD (and God do I hate including this, but it's necessary). THEN then fun starts. I went through all the New and Mighty Secret Invasion issues that dealt with the Skrull's backstories, along with other backstory's and such, and put them in reading order. So after the initial set up, you get all the Skrull backstory from the Illuminati's invading the Skrull Homeworld through their discovering Blackbolts as a skrull in the current. It makes for a really cool read. I'd also like to include Thor 3 where he faces Iron Man due to it being referanced in Secret Invasion 7. Unfortunately, it's a bear to find for less than $10. I may just find a cheap trade online of Thor 1-6 and cut it up, maybe including some of the other issues.

Secret Invasion Vol. 3: He Loves You
Captain Marvel 1 (1)
Young Avengers Presents 2 (1)
Captain Marvel 2-5 (4)
SI: Fantastic Four 1 (Beginning through Sue's fall)

SI: Thor 1-3 (3)
The Initiative 14 ("Two Weeks Ago" - End)
The Inititiave 15 (Beginning - "Safe Travels")
Secret Invasion 1 (Beginning - Mavel Boy)
The Initiative 15 (3-D Man on Plane - War Machine scene)
Secret Invasion 1 (FF scene through "Susan!")

Secret Invasion 1 (FF Plaza Implodes - End)
Secret Invasion 2 (Beginning - Natasha Kicking Beast)
Mighty Avengers 14 (Jarvis meeting - Sentry In Darkness)
Secret Invasion 2 (Ronan Vs Hawkeye - Stark "Go!")
SI: WDYT 1 (Beast & Wonderman)
New Avengers 41 ("Fooom" - End)
New Avengers 43 (Beginning - End)
Secret Invasion 2 (Luke, Wolverine, & Ronan - End)

Thunderbolts 123-124 (123: Starting at "The Zues. Traveling twice the speed of sound...)
Thunderbolts 125 (Beginning - "Godspeed")
Mighty Avengers 19 (Marvel getting blasted - 1st 1/2 of crash)
Secret Invasion 6 (Maaggh!" - "As a last resort")
The Initiative 17 (Day Care Center - End)
The Initiative 18 (Beginning - Human Blood on his fists.)

The Initiative 19 (Central Park - End)
Secret Invasion 8 (Iron Man & Thor - Tony "What?")
Mighty Avengers 20
SI: Dark Reign (Perhaps move to Next Volume)

Note: I'm debating on including Deadpool 1-3 due to his later tie-in with Thunderbolts but I'm not sure yet. I'm also debating on including the New Warrior tie-ins due to Counter Force's appearance and Night Thrasher's being with them in Avengers: The Initiative Disassembled. If I do that then I may include all of the New Warriors 1st arc in the 1st volume instead of just parts of it dealing with the Initiative tie-in.

JH, I asked about this in a different thread before I saw this one, but I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I'm actually really excited to get this done. I found that same company that you used for yours and I'm also glad to see that your just basic bindings turned out looking so nice. I was worried that I would have to use more of the add ons that they offer. The one thing I wanted to know is when you say that you like to keep it at 1 1/2" - 1 3/4" for the thickness, generally how many issues does that encompass? Thanks a lot man.

It changes depending on the comics thickness but I typically plan a volume at 30 issues. My own personal prefrence is to remove the back covers and anything inside that's not story (such as letter pages, pages with adds on both sides, etc.) Then from there it could be right about the size I like, though sometimes it turns out a little thicker or thinner. Example: I did a Spidey Clone saga volume with 30 issues and it ended up around 2 1/4 inches thick so I had to get rid of some stuff to keep from losing too much art in the center. But then I did an X-Men Volume (not yet bound) at the same amount of issues and it's only 1 1/4 inches thick. I don't know what makes the differance but a good estimation to plan toward is 30.

Awesome, thanks a lot. I know what my project for this weekend is going to be if it keeps on raining!

Here's a shot of my handbound copy of Marvel's Kitty Pryde: Shadows and Flame. I'll shoot other angles as soon I get around to it.

I posted this for my buddies over at the Contest of Marvels, but I thought, what the heck... let's tell all my other Marvel buddies about it as well. I don't know if anyone else around here does this, but I discovered another message board where people bind their comics into hardback volumes as they choose, and I grew curious. It's taken months for me to build up the money and courage to try it (since the comics become worthless after that, as they are cut in two and sewn together). I just got them back and I LOVE them.

They are three volumes of what I'm calling "The Spider-Man Saga." I'm binding spiderman (mixing all titles, some minis, and some guest stars) in a chronological reading order as detailed as I can. I am also separating the Volume count by titling eras (for lack of better words). This project is the first 3 volumes of an era I call "Nostalgia" because it's the era that first got me into comics back in the early 90's. These comics are very Nostalgic for me, so that's why I gave it the name. It will run 5 or 6 volumes until the "Clone Saga" era begins with a new volume 1. Each book is rougly 30 issues, and though there is minor gutter loss in places, it isn't enough to cause me a problem, and most of the books are perfectly fine. No words are cut out and only minor bits of art are loss from spreads. My only complaint with the volumes is something that was my own fault. There was a gatefold cover in volume 1 but I didn't specify that I wanted it bound so it folded out, and thus, it was kinda messed up in the binding (somehow cut so that the back part of the cover is alone and the other two fold out... though the pictures don't flow right as the first and last page are reversed)... no biggie though. I'm still pleased and instantly addicted. My whole comic collection will eventually be collected in volumes like this, though it will take quite some time. The reading orders of each book are below, followed by pics:

Nostalgia Book 1: Tales Of The Fallen (30 Issues)
Web of Spiderman 81-82

Must....HAVE!

Oh keep looking through the rest of the thread. There's more :)

And just so everyone knows, I have my 3 volume set of Civil War ready to go. I just need to wait until Friday to get some shipping money and they'll be off. I'm doing white buckram with red lettering. Can't wait!

Here it is, Kitty Pryde: Shadows and Flame. Handbound by me!

This is an old work of mine. It's one of the early Blade of the Immortal stories.

Way to go man! Those look great!

I'm actually going to be sending out 5 to 6 more volumes to be bound over the next couple days. I haven't decided what yet or whether or not I'm going to send stuff I already have complete or if I'm going to fill some holes first.

Thanks. I would have done this sooner but I was waiting for my airbrush spraybooth to be constructed first. Now I can proceed with my other book projects.

Cool, look forward to seeing them.

And I just boxed up my next batch that I'll be sending out tomorrow. It's my first 5 volumes of X-Men and the first volume of Green Lantern.

Green Lantern (Vol. 1): Rebirth
Green Lantern: Rebirth 1-6
Green Lantern 1-6
Green Lantern Corps: Recharge 1-5
JLA: Crisis of Conscience
Infinite Crisis 1
Green Lantern 7-9
Infinite Crisis 2-4
Infinite Crisis: Rann Thanagar War Special
Infinite Crisis 5-7

I may be off on the placing of the Rann/Thanagar there, as I'm going by memory, but it's where it goes chronologically in the series. I was going to include the Rann/Thanagar mini lead-in but the Lanterns were barely in it and it wasn't really that necessary for Infinite Crisis, so I left it out. It's really at the full length a single volume can be at anyhow. I'm actually a little worried that it might be a little too thick myself. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

Here's the map of the 5 volumes of X-Men. I'm calling this lot "Mutant Genesis."

Volume 1: Weapon X
X-Men 1-3
MCP (Cyber)
MCP (Weapon X)
Wolverine 48-50
X-Men 4-7
X-Factor 67 (Shinobi/Sebastion fight... 3 pages)
Uncanny X-Men 281-288
MCP (Nightcrawler)

"MCP" is Marvel Comics Presents. The "Cyber" story is the Wolverine story against him somewhere around the 90's. The Nightcrawler issues are from 101-108 I believe. Weapon X is the original Weapon X storyline. The X-Factor 67 scene is just one scene I snipped from the issue that introduced the Gamesmaster's Upstart game, which was a pretty big thing in this era of the X-Men and one of my favorate storylines.

Volume 2: Strangely Familiar
X-Men 8
Ghost Rider 26
X-Men 9
Ghost Rider 27
Ghost Rider 29
Wolverine 51-53
Wolverine 55-57
Wolverine 60-65
Shattershot 1-3
X-Men 10-11
Shattershot 4
MCP (Nightmare/Doom)
MCP (Venom)
MCP (Typhoid Mary)

Besides the X-Men stories, I also included the Wolverine arc where Mariko died, as well as Wolverine learning about his past about Silver Fox, Maverick, Sabretooth, Weapon X, etc. The MCP Nightmare/Doom stories are from issues 99 and 100. The Venom story is around 114 or so. The Typhoid Mary story was right around there as well. I mostly used these as filler to fill up the volume a bit.

Volume 3: X-Cutioner Song
X-Force 1 (Opening scene)
Uncanny X-Men 289-293
Cable 1-2
X-Factor 77-78
X-Men 12-13
Excalibur 55-56
X-Cutioner's Song
Uncanny X-Men 297
Stryfe's Strike Files
Wolverine 72-74

Most everything not X-Men prior to X-Cutioner's Song has to do with Stryfe or the Mutant Liberation Front. The Excalibur issues guest star Psylocke and are referenced in one of the X-Men issues. And the Wolverine story is grossly out of place, but it doesn't quote a time frame and can really fit anywhere. I liked this story a lot, as it deals with Jubilee finding out who killed her parents, and I didn't like it where it was originally (in release order) so I moved it here.

Volume 4: Legacy
Wolverine 66-68
X-Men 17-19
New Warriors 31
X-Force 19
Uncanny X-Men Annual 17 (Sonia story)
Uncanny X-Men 298-300
X-Men Unlimited 1
X-Men 20-23 (remove the Xavier/Wolverine scene from 23)
Wolverine 69-71
X-Men 23 (Wolverine/Xavier scene)
Uncanny X-Men Annual 17
Uncanny X-Men 301-303
X-Men 24
Sabretooth 1-4

A lot of fallout from X-Cutioner's Song and lead-ins to Fatal Attractions. I called this volume "Legacy" because this is where the Legacy Virus first starts taking it's toll with the deaths of Mastermind and Illyana Rasputin.

Volume 5: Fatal Attractions
Gambit 1-4
X-Factor 92
X-Force 24- 25
X-Factor 93
Uncanny X-Men 304
X-Men Unlimited 2
Uncanny X-Men 305-306
X-Men 25
Wolverine 75
X-Force 26 (Remove Reignfire scene)
Excalibur 71
Bloodties 1-5
Wolverine 76-78
X-Force/New Warriors: Child's Play

This one is Fatal Attractions plain and simple. I added X-Force 26 to show Cable's recovery from Magneto's assault in issue 25 before his going after Colossus and battle with Rachel in Excalibur 71. Wolverine 76-78 shows the aftermath of Wolvie's leaving the team after losing his adamantium and that's just about all I'll show of his solo journeys here. I'm planning on binding those separate someday. And the Child's Play stuff was added in because the Upstart Game was a pretty big thing in the X-Men Books but was concluded away from them in X-Force and New Warriors, so I included this arc to finish that storyline up.

I have a couple of questions:

1. The Index page that has the cover picture and the issues and numbers, did you make that or do they?

2. How long does it usually take for you to get the book back after you sent it out?

3. If a page has an ad on the top side, do you leave it so the ad stays where it is, or do you flip the page so the comic part is on top, and the ad is on bottom. (if that makes any sense.)

I would really like to do this. I don't have much, but the full run of New X-Men (the second series) could be split up into 2, and also I have the full messiah complex I would do. Looks cool.

what happens if you want to put in a book that was in the awful Marvel-scope?

I've been trying to figure out the Marvel Scope stuff myself since I plan to eventually bind X-Men up to current, including some of the Annuals that were Marvel Scopes. Chances are you'll just have to keep flipping your book around to read it. The only other thing I can think of is that the binder may be able to bind it as is with the pages sticking out the side of the book but fold them nicely so you just need to unfold the pages, but that may also create gaps. I'll worry about it when the time comes.

Heffer Wolf said:

I made it in Microsoft Paint and cut it to size.

2. How long does it usually take for you to get the book back after you sent it out?

The estimated time is 2-3 weeks after they receive it. So maybe 3 to 4 weeks. However, if they get ahead of schedual or behind schedual that can fluctuate. 3 weeks is the earliest I've heard, 8 weeks is the longest.

3. If a page has an ad on the top side, do you leave it so the ad stays where it is, or do you flip the page so the comic part is on top, and the ad is on bottom. (if that makes any sense.)

I usually leave them as is. If a page has ads on both sides I'll get rid of it entirely, but otherwise I just leave it as it is. However, you can flip it if you want. When they trim the edges you won't even tell it's been flipped.

I hope to one day do that run as well as I loved it. I'd also suggest including the New Mutants series that ran before New X-Men being that it's the beginning of the story and introduced almost all the characters.

Yeah, I checked it out the otehr day, its perfect:

New X-Men book 1:
New Mutants #1-13
New X-Men #1-15
Hellions #1-4
New X-Men Yearbook Special

New X-Men book 2:
New X-Men #16-43

That would be awesome.

That first book is on the borderline of maybe being a bit too thick with the chance of losing text in the spine, so judge it before you send it. Make sure it's less than 2 inches. Personally, I try to keep it around 1 3/4 inches to be safe, but it's up to you.

Oh, and I think chronologically the Yearbook Special takes place prior to the Hellions mini.

Also, you want more to add to the second volume, prior to issue 16 you can add a little X-23 stuff in there. Her second mini (Innoscence Lost I think?) ties in with the Mercury Rising arc of New X-Men so it might be a good lead-in to start the volume or take place prior to that arc.

this whole thing has be very intrigued.....and I was just doing some tidying....I have a crap load of comics lying around....

There is plenty I might like to do this for.....I would have liked to have done it with Exiles....but I've already rebought them all in TPBs....

But Alias would be nice like this....well just a whole lot really....too much to list.

But I think as a start I would send off the 14 issue Maximum Carnage then maybe my secret wars.......or are they too valuable? meh not really....comics are for reading, not selling.....

Also, JH, have you ever looked into doing this yourself at all?

Now for the 2 volume set of Mutant X. The spine, as shown above, states "The X-Men Saga", then specifies Mutant X below. I did this because I originally thought I was going to do a huge X-Universe set tieing in every X-Book and such. These were going to be stand alone in that set. However, I've since changed my mind and am doing the titles individually with tie-ins included in each run where neede (meaning I'll have to buy quite a few doubles, but I think I'll like it better). So Eventually I'm going to go back and have these rebound, lose the X-Men Saga part, and make the coloring a dark purple instead of Black so it's more individual. The map is as follows:

Mutant X (Vol. 1): I Remember Dying
X-Factor 149
Mutant X 1-8
Mutant X '99
Mutant X 9-16

Mutant X (Vol. 2): I Remember Living
Mutant X 2000
Mutant X 17-31
Mutant X 2001
Mutant X 32

I thought about adding in the 3 issue Paradise X: Heralds mini with Bloodstorm and the Uncanny X-Men issue where Havoc shows up again in a coma but felt they added nothing to the story, so I left them out.

100_1652.jpg

100_1661.jpg

I've always wanted to read Mutant X.....never have though.....it's far too late now but you were talking about what you were thinking of adding onto the end, there was an arc in Exiles where the Exiles had to come to Earth 616 to kill Havok because his 616 body was also holding the mind of the real havok from Mutant X (Evil havok)...and evil havok took over the body and they fought him...blah blah blah.....I think it was actually written by Chuck Austin.....but Clayton Henry did some great art (I actually have a piece of the original art from the issues)

Anyway...too late now, but It might have been the true capper on the Mutant X Saga.

Man, I wish I would have thought of that. I remember the issues, they were good. It would have been a great addition to the volume. probably include the issue where he comes back in a coma and/or comes out of it. Then that arc. Oh well.

And I've considered doing it myself but I just don't really trust my own craftmanship. I'm pleased with Library Binding Company's work so I'll just stick with the professionals.

And just so you know, you can take several tpb's and have them bound together like this as well. Just remove the covers and spine and use the pages. I've not done this yet but I hear the best way is to use a hairdryer on the spine to losen the glue then you should be able to pull the cover off or the pages out. I plan on doing this to Y the Last Man at some point, and probably Invincible.

yeah...but if they're already in TPBs......

Maybe for something like Earth X....if I wanted to put Paradise X and Universe X in it .....for some reason.....though I can't imagine wanting those last two in there.
