My Run- In With Homophobia from a (Former) DC/Marvel Inker

I'm gay, and my reaction is pretty much "um....ok".

It's an argument on Facebook. Rich Perotta sounds like a moron.

But I don't really see this as some story that needs a thread about it.

$.02.

I would have implied he was a closeted gay. It's how I roll.

The man's a moronic ass, but that's par for the course on facebook.

I don't really think it needed it's own thread either, but I didn't know where else to post it. And I said that in my original post.

I can see why you would be offend but its just another prejudiced ass**** mouthing off on the internet. 90% of youtube comments are pretty much this kind of dumb rubbish.

I really wouldn't give a rat ass about a mild acquaintance talking homophobic s*** on the internet. If this inker guy really had a pair balls he wouldn't be whining on Facebook.

It really isn't worth getting worked up about. Clearly this inker guy doesn't have much going on in life if he is moaning about petty stuff like this.

On the plus side, we've just helped Orson Scott Card find his new inker! :awesome: :(

He was going on and on about how his ex or something took him to see Brokeback Mountain and saying how he ''lost all his masculinity because he watched it and then continued with some additional messed up comments. ''I had to punch a guy, eat raw steak, and knock up two college cheerleaders to be a man again!''

Its pretty clear (to me) that this part is a joke. I wouldn't say that those comments are messed up, just his attempt at humor. I have certainly heard worse, and without any sort of retaliation.
I know what I would have said in response, either as a joke or to get a "bazinga" out of it, but I won't post it here (nothing vulgar or outside the rules, just a simple observation related to him going to see the movie to begin with).

If you guys are looking at a link or cut and paste with all of the comments, I cant see it.

Wow, reading the comments that guy is a class-A *****e. And he got called out hard too. I don't think anyone should get professionally blackballed for personal views, but he is undoubtedly a huge, huge *****ebag (as well as an insecure and semi-literate bigot).

"Is your sperm spinach?"

What the **** does that even mean?! :lmao:

But, yeah, major d-bag.

wow, that guy Perotta is a real d**k... ignore the ignorant... he's just not worth the time and effort in starting a thread and discussing his ignorance...

You're confusing freedom of speech with freedom from consequences. By your logic anyone should be able to spread whatever vitriolic hate speech they want under the blanket protection of "freedom of speech".

Also, I have no idea what communism has to do with this? It's not about controlling people, it's about making sure everyone knows they're accountable for their behaviour. Quite simple.

I’m sure I’ll get ripped to shreds for this, but here we go:

I think what Destructus86 was alluding to is the notion that this idea that demanding consequences for someone’s actions is a fine line, what that in this day and age is steadily beginning to encroach on freedom of speech. We live in a society where people are LOOKING to be offended so they can rip someone else apart, and where the “consequence” quite often is far more severe than the actual offense deserves. This thread is a perfect example: a troll on facebook – one of millions on a daily basis – makes a few hateful comments at batboy99 during an internet fight. Now, several people here are calling for this guy to lose his job, kill his career, etc. How in the world does his words in such an idiotic fight justify ruining the dude’s life/career? That isn’t valid consequence – that’s vindictiveness, nothing more. When we get to the point where fear of/the act of revenge is synonymous with consequence, then YES, freedom of speech is in danger.

Furthermore, I’m going say that I don’t think it’s smart, nor helpful to throw around labels such as “homophobic”, “racist”, “sexist”, etc. Terms like this are becoming gross ways to sabotage someone’s life/character/opinion in ways that really don’t justify the weight of the term. These labels are being used inaccurately and disingenuously so often these days it’s disgusting. We have a major problem when people are so quick and happy to defame someone’s character in such a way just to invalidate their opinions/comments and/or elevate your own.

For the record, what the OP has provided I don’t think is worthy of calling the guy a homophobe. He very well could be (as the average person doesn’t speak that way) but that simple facebook spat is hardly enough to accurately label a person with such a major accusation. Was the guy being a jerk? ABSOLUTELY. Was his choice of vocabulary wrong/disgusting? Without doubt. But angry words during a fight are not enough to justify crucifying one’s character. Let’s not ignore the fact that the OP started the fight with insults, followed by the dude trying to explain himself and apologizing, only for the OP to keep at it. To ME, it looks as if batboy simply wanted to fight, provoked the guy into anger and then ran here when he had the ammo he wanted to get back at the guy for what he said about the other artist...it's basically entrapment. Of course, there could be more to the story that solidifies things one way or the other – I’m just going off of what has been provided here.

I’m not defending the guy’s comments, nor am I justifying them. What I AM saying is that we really need to be careful how we decide to react to others, and how we choose the “consequences”. When consequences far outweigh the actual offense, we have a major problem. Speaking generally, when people chose to be petty and “offended” at the slightest infraction instead of pragmatically looking at the situation, we have a problem. When we mistake deferring views as criminality, we have a problem. When we choose to take the easy path of disproportionally damning someone instead of the harder (and more fruitful) road of rational thought, reflection, and seeking of real solutions, we have a major problem.

To the OP: that guy was a jerk, no doubt about it, but my advice to you is to let it go. He, nor his words are worthy of your time and energy.

Was that a gay Popeye joke or something?
I totally said the same thing!

Ill say this. Im not extremely personally butt hurt by this guy. It's more so the fact that things like that are even said, in public, and a lot of people just brush it off as ''just joking''.

Calling someone a f*g, making a stereotype purse joke and previously implying that being gay means you're less of a man is totally homophobic.

Where did he try to explain himself and apologize? Maybe I cant see those comments.
And I admit, I was wrong for stooping to his level and using insults. I totally was. I shouldn't have done that.Yeah I said he had whiney posts, I dont think that is really considered a major insult or justifies his use of the word f*g. Or you know, threatening to beat me up(LOL)

Edit: But actually, I think it's interesting reading others views on this(and other similar) situation.

Ill get rid of the post as to not tarnish his name any further

Imply that he is nothing more than a ''tracer''

The conversation is over now. He quickly deleted me from his Facebook(But went on to tell another friend I blocked him or something lol)

For what it's worth batboy, I admire the stand you took, whether this guy is a "somebody" or not.

In the image you included in your opening post, he apologized - top right corner of your image.

No, you didn't offer any "major" insult, but insults are insults. You (admirably) tried to stand up for your friend, but had you done so with a cooler head/less aggressively, I'm quite sure there would have been a different outcome. And you are definitely correct, your comments, though I saw them as intentionally provoking, does NOT justify the slurs he used. If my post gave that impression, I apologize; I tried to make it clear I didn't condone his actions.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share this. Didn't know where else to post it, so I made a thread(Mods feel free to move it).

I just wanted to make everyone aware of this guy.
His name is Rich Perotta. He is an inker for both Marvel and DC and I was friends with him on Facebook for a while.

A little back story, a close friend of mine made a simple status which led to this guy making some homophobic ''jokes''. My friend proceeded to tell him how and why his comments were offensive, and then unfriended him.

Yesterday, he makes a not so subtle status about her. Bashing her, calling her talentless and saying she has no personality.
Of course, she has no way to stand up for herself, so I say something. I realize it isn't exactly my business, but she is a very close friend and I wasn't about to let someone say such things.
So, I posted something on his wall and needless to say, the name calling and threats didn't take long.

Again, I know it wasn't my business, but I'm sure most would stand up for their friend in this kind of situation. And I don't take lightly to such comments.
Oh, and he also proceeded to tell another friend that he was just ''joking'' about all this stuff.

is your friend gingerhazing

I hate the term homophobia, it's not a fear. People like this are just ***holes

Heterosexist is perhaps a better word.

The guy sounds like a loser.
