Nicholas Cage is coming to get all the treasure again.:wow:

There’s been talk about a possible third National Treasure film for the last couple of years, with both producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub saying that a script is being worked on. And with as well as the first two films did, it would seem like a no-brainer to get into production.

So, when Collider got the opportunity to speak with Turteltaub about his latest film, the comedy Last Vegas (due out in theaters on November 1st), I took the chance to ask him for an update on the status of National Treasure 3, and he’s definitely still hopeful that it will happen within the next couple of years. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: There was talk about National Treasure 3 hitting theaters for Christmas 2011, and now it’s just about Christmas 2013 and the film hasn’t been shot yet. Why has that been so difficult to get going, when it should be such a no-brainer?

JON TURTELTAUB: If you can write the script, we’ll take it! It’s so damn hard to write a great historical mystery based on fact. It’s not for lack of trying. We want to do the movie. Disney wants to do the movie. We’re just having the damnedest time, writing it.

Do you think it’s something that will still happen?

TURTELTAUB: I do. I’ll bet that within two years, we’ll be shooting that movie.

Are you close to being ready?

TURTELTAUB: We’re closer. I’d say we’re about half-way there. It’s not only writing a great historical mystery, but we’ve gotta write something that has nothing to do with anything we’ve done before. The goal is to always have an original sequel, as silly as that sounds. We really want to make sure that the third one doesn’t just feel like a repeat of the first one, or one too many.

I think I'm one of the few people that really enjoyed the first National Treasure. I was a kid when it came out, but I still like it today. The second one was nothing special.

I'll see this one if they're able to realize that the second film was no good

I liked National Treasure quite a bit. The second one was decent, not as good as the first of course.

true true

"I'm gonna have sex with the Declaration of Independence."

It was about time. Didn't these movies also inspire the uncharted game series?

I want this NOW!!!

I actually enjoyed the first one, too. And I want to know what was on that page they were talking about in the second one. If they skip over that with the third, it's going to **** me.

Uncharted is straight Indy.

I watch these films for Miss Kruger. Literally the only reason.

Took too long to do the third movie. Should've been doing that instead of the god awful live action Sorcerer's Apprentice flick.

I think it's all talk. It's probably not gonna happen. But then again, Hollywood is a weird business where we're getting an Independence Day sequel in 2-3 years. So never say never.

The first movie was good and I enjoyed that. I have actually visited most of those places in the first movie, so it was fun to see that all encapsulated in one film. The second one, although I have visited some of the places (or even live in one of the cities) it really didn't live up to the first one.

I thought that too, but the creators of the game said they were also inspired by National Treasure.

I find these films entertaining, but i don't like it when they take so long to release the sequels after their film has gotten so much money, if they were cooking some great masterpiece i would understand, but this is escapist fun

the first 2 movies were fun, so i'm interested in seeing a third.

They say it because of all the negative "they ripped off Indy" talk. But if you have played the games, and I have multiple times, they are straight Indy. Globetrotting, ancient artifacts of supernatural powers, Drake having a lot of Indy's traits, etc.

The scene in Uncharted 3 with young Drake might as well have been ripped from The Last Crusade.

The 3rd should be set in the future where the heroes must find the tomb of Nicolas Cage and resurrect him in order to save the world. After all, Cage IS a national treasure.

I did, i was just mentioning what they said, i allways thought they felt more like modern Indiana Jones, but i gotta go with what the creators of the game say. And thinking about it there is some National Treasure in the heart of Uncharted, with the objects being tied to his family.

The creators were uncomfortable with the Indy talk. Considering the actual games I think it is pretty clear. They have moments and scenes lifted straight from Indy. The general idea is straight Indy. Drake acts like Indy, well outside of the moments he is sociopath. All that is missing is the hat and the whip.

And lets not forget, National Treasure is like a low rent Indy series.

I honestly really wish a third film would be about Nic Cage trying to highjack the International Space Station. Tie it into something related to the former space race.

This should have been made years ago, especially since it is the only thing Cage does anymore that makes any money.

I liked the first two enough. Not great films, but good harmless, family entertainment.

I wouldn't call them Low Rent Indy films, they're kind of a cross between Indiana Jones and Dan Brown, if anything i'dd call them a family version of The Da Vinci Code

The first one was made largely to cash in on The DaVinci Code craze. In a fun twist, it ended up being much better than The DaVinci Code.

That's because the DaVinci Code was completely boring and slow. Even when they hinted there was going to be a chase, it fell flat. Too many false starts. I'd rather watch National Treasure any day.
