Jay Baruchel (Fanboys, Tropic Thunder) is in talks to play the lead role in Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Inspired by the classic Mickey Mouse animated sequence from Disney’s 1940 classic Fantasia, the film tells the story of a powerful sorcerer, played by Nicolas Cage, who seeks out an apprentice in modern day New York City. National Treasure-series helmer Jon Turteltaub directs the Jerry Bruckheimer production.

Not much else is known about the film at this time, but the writers involved might give you some idea of what to expect — The film was scripted by Superman IV: The Quest for Peace screenwriters Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, with a rewrite by Bedtime Stories scribe Matt Lopez.

I don't see this movie doing to well.

I like Jay, but Nic Cage....

Nic Cage as a wizard? Did they even bother to actually HIRE a casting agent for this or did they just randomly point at actors to determine the roles?

Huh? Oh, God, just imagining Nic Cage in a cloak with a hood on on top of that hair is hilarious.

Molina is the Villain in The Sorcerer's Apprentice

March 3, 2009

/Film reports that Alfred Molina, who played Doc Ock in the critically acclaimed Spider-Man 2, will play an evil sorcerer in Walt Disney Pictures' The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Molina will be joining Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer in the big screen adaptation, directed by Jon Turteltaub and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

The film takes place in contemporary New York, where a wizard (Cage) searches for an apprentice (Baruchel).

Oh man, I smell a turkey. This better be one of those so-bad-it's-good movies. I just can't imagine Nic Cage as wizard.

I like Alfred Molina  but maybe not enough for me to see this film in theatres.

I'm really expecting this to have the playful tone of a movie like Enchantment and surprise a lot of people.

Disney has set a July 16, 2010, release date for Jerry Bruckheimer-produced family adventure "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Also on Thursday, Warner Bros. made additions and changes to its 2009 calendar. Studio will open James McTeigue's "Ninja Assassin," instead of horror pic "The Box," on Nov. 25, with "The Box" now bowing Oct. 30. Studio originally intended to open "Ninja" in 2010.

Dating of "Sorcerer's Apprentice" gives the Mouse House three event pics in summer 2010. The other two are "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" (May 28) and "Toy Story 3" (July 18).

Jon Turteltaub is directing the live-action pic, based on the famed "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment in Disney's "Fantasia."

Modern-day update stars Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel. Lensing begins this month.

"Sorcerer's Apprentice" enters a crowded playing field, but it has an advantage in carrying the Disney and Bruckheimer brands. Disney is using the same frame that Warner Bros. will have used for two of the "Harry Potter" pics, including this summer's "Half-Blood Prince."

When dating "Sorcerer's Apprentice," Disney also said it is moving back this year's release of Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy "The Proposal" from June 12 to June 19.

The relocation gets "Proposal" out of the way of Denzel Washington-John Travolta actioner "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," which Sony opens on June 19.

What the hell is up with Nic Cage? He used to be so cool.

Do we know whether or not they are intentionally making this a comedy?

^Lol, you'd think they recast Van Helsing.

SO many things wrong with this I dont even know where to start...

Well Nic would have been a better Van helsing in my book and you guys are way too harsh on Nic. I mean you doom a movie just because he is in the movie. I think he looks cool and its a shame how people once liked him now trash every film he is in.

i have no problem with Nic, but this movie seems like **** from the get go.

My reaction to that pic can only be illustrated by a series of smilies

 :lmao: :csad: :lmao: :csad:  :csad: :lmao: :csad: :lmao:
