need to vent?

I got the Ultimate Avengers Rise of the Black Panther DVD for myself for easter...

I haven't watched the movie yet, but I've watched the extras...

Giant Man is a WIFE BEATER
The Wasp lets herself be his victim :csad:
The Hulk accidentally kills people during his rampages :cmad:

I prefer my heroes to be extra-ordinary. Giant Man is a villain, not a hero if he is a wife beater. The Wasp can't really be a very good hero if she lets herself gets beaten up without defending herself (and what kind of role model is that). The Hulk that I grew up with was always trying to avoid people (and avoid hurting them)

Well that is wha happens when they add real life issues to comics. Next Captain America gets charged for rape :P

We've really already gotten everything wedding-related done. The only thing left to do is board the plane. That was a huge relief. And I'm not really nervous about it much. Its more just being excited and impatient.

My job I've always hated but its worse now because my manager is on this new thing about riding everyone's asses all the time. Everyone, even the one who has been there 20 years, is ready to walk out on him.

And the people have always been irritating, I just notice it more now. Really, I think I know the root of my problems, but its not something I want to talk about on a public forum.

Anyway, yeah, I was planning on getting a manicure/pedicure today and maybe drive out to the beach. It'll at least help for a little while. :yay:

I always figured the Ultimates were for a more adult crowd.

Hanky Pym a wife beater.
The Hulk a cannibal.

Etc.

Yes, it's definitely a very "adult" comic  I love it, except for the fact that the issues come out months apart

He's dead, so that ain't gonna be a very good storyline.

:csad: I don't mind "adult" comics, but you don't have to make the "good" guys the wife beaters. These are the folk that we are supposed to aspire to be, after all. Make the villains the wife beaters and murderers.

I think Millar is really pushing the idea that these are not "good guys" vs "bad guys". It's more like REAL people that happened to have these powers. It's more about real people with real issues to deal with and it pushes forward with character development and you have to continue to read the story to watch these characters grow and develop. The actions and reactions of the characters are done in a very realistic way, and in real life, unfortunately, it's NEVER as simple as "good guy" and "bad guy".

The mugging that keeps on giving, it to me, in the ass. Despite the crime victims board saying they were covering it, I just got a call from the hospital (at least 6 months after the incident) saying I owe them over 1,000 dollars, for the ambulance ride that I didn't want to take, but that the cops made me take. I called 911 to report the crime, not to be ass-raped by hospital charges for services I didn't even need.

I think my supervisor wants me to quit.

Here's why.

We have been converting from the system we use here in Canada to a system they use in the States. We've basically been doing it one or two client accounts at a time. My job has been to document the specialized programs for each client. Tomorrow night is the next conversion. I finished documenting the client for this conversion 3 months ago. TODAY we got an e-mail from one of the American programmers asking us about some of the reports.

I sent a response back giving the link to the existing documentation and saying: "after reading this, if you have any further questions, please let me know" (ccing my supervisor).

I got an e-mail back from my supervisor asking that I make the documentation less system specific... (not asking for any details regarding any particular line or anything, and not from the programmer actually doing the work State-side)... THE LINK WAS FOR THE LESS SYSTEM SPECIFIC DOCUMENTATION... Ok, fine, dandy, passed it off to the other programmer here to review to see if he could make it even easier to understand. Conversion is still scheduled for TOMORROW and they haven't finished writing (never mind testing) the programs.

Then I get an e-mail from my supervisor asking why, in the Conversion Timeline, I had substituted another IT persons name for my own. I gave the three main reasons in response (one of which is that the person in question has outside access to the system that I do not).

My supervisor than asks... "Will you be available if problems occur?" No, I intend to leave the bloody country. Of course I'll be available, we've done these conversions 6 times now and every time I always provide both my cell phone and home phone numbers... I was only called ONCE for all 6 conversions and the only suggestion I could make was the person running the programs shut down the programs and restart them.

I get that sense from a lot of mediums these days, not just the comics. Extreme realism seems to be the mode right now, even in fantasy material.

Ok, REAL people with real issues, but honestly, there have been many really well developed characters created without the authors ever resorting to making them villains in their own homes. A wife beater BELONGS IN JAIL. That is assault. If a normal, good person, finds out his friend is being beaten by her husband, he should get the husband PUT IN JAIL. If you are a wife beater you are a villain, pure and simple, and should be treated as a villain. From what little I was able to garner from the "extras" in the Ultimates DVD, Cap beats up Giant Man, but doesn't get him arrested for his crimes.

Having worked in an IT environment before, especially during system conversions, I'm just betting your boss is stressed out and wants to make sure everything goes smoothly. Incident-free conversions are a big metric for most IT Program Managers and it's a really stressful thing to manage and make sure is on track. I don't think he intends to be terse or alienate you. He's just making sure everyone's ready to go for the deliverables to the client. How do I know this specifically? I used to have a position very similar to your supervisor's. It's stressful as hell (thus why I no longer do that kind of work). So cut him some slack. :)

I think putting these fantastic characters in a real world makes them more interesting. That's one of the flaws in the DC and Marvel books is that now-a-days it seems as though EVERYONE in the book has a superpower. If that's the case then what makes them so special. I think the Ultimates is one of the better written and more satisfying titles out there right now. Aside from the fact that they seem to come out with a new every six months or so. :csad:

Hank Pymm has always had issues and troubles dealing with his powers, though. I can see why they would want to build on his already existing demons and make him even more troubled.

Hank is never looked at the same after that, not to mention the asswhooping Cap gives him. The last fight that Hank and Janet get into(the big one) wasn't him abusing her...they were really fighting. And she hit him first I believe....in the head....with a typewriter.

Otherwise normal people having to deal with and contend with fantastical and hugely challenging circumstances always makes for an interesting story. Imagine the psychological toll it would take on you to possess superhero powers and always try to play the part of a hero instead of serve your own desires or even become an outright criminal that would be difficult or even impossible to stop. The sense of responsibility would be massive and it would skew your sense of reality as much as having abilities that give you a gigantic advantage over normal human beings or even others with super powers. And it would definitely make relationships with others, particularly of the opposite sex, that much more challenging. It would be a massive mind-f**k and psychologically could be very taxing. It's a more realistic take on how real people would behave in these circumstances instead of the traditional, two-dimensional "I'm a superhero and always do GOOOOOD!" type of character that many of these characters got their start as.

Wait, you haven't READ THE BOOK? Well yeah Hank and Janet have a fight but it was like he was kicking her around or anything. She starts it off by up and hitting him in the head with a toaster and they trade blows. Hank crosses the line when he sicks his ants on her. But you have to actually see what transpires, it equates to some of the more aggressive Brando scenes in Streetcar. Yes, Cap hospitalizes Hank soon after and yeah he wasn't arrested, because just prior to all of this he saved countless lives in New York by helping to stop the Hulk. There are too many variables to make it as black and white as you are. Beating your spouse is wrong by all means, but there are other factors that you are not aware of simply because you have not read the story. I think that the fact that you are married might be causing you to get a little emotional about a matter in which you do not have the full story.

TOO MANY EFFIN PPL ON THE ROAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cmad:

I HATE TRAFFIC!!!:cmad: :cmad: :cmad:

Okay, so if you're not Canadian, you've probably not heard about the big economic boom going on in Alberta. With all the money coming in from the oil sands projects up north and the province undergoing the greatest period of growth since its formation, literally thousands of people are moving to Calgary EVERY DAMN DAY. We just hit a million people this year and we're projected to hit 1.5 within the next 15. That's pretty ridiculous growth if you ask me.

Now, I'm not racist or a white elitist or anything like that, but it's very noticeable that most of the migrants coming to Calgary are recent Canadian immigrants who didn't like living in Toronto or Vancouver and wanted to be where the real money is at. The result? A massive shift in the cultural makeup of the city that is getting really hard to deal with. Gang violence between the Asians and the Lebanese is getting hard to handle and innocent people get caught in the crossfire every now and again.

Not to mention that with all these people moving in, the cost of a house has skyrocketed. My rent has DOUBLED in the past 3 years to an obscene amount. There are university students LIVING on campus because they can't afford the few places that are available to rent. Calgary's homeless population has tripled in the past 5 years. But Encana is building a new 63-story tower that will dominate the downtown skyline, so who cares about the poor people, right?

This runaway growth isn't good for ANYBODY except for those that are already rich. I don't want to graduate because then I'm going to have to look for somewhere else to live and I'm doubtful that I'll be able to find somewhere affordable. I don't want to be forced out of MY TOWN because of all the opportunists from the Maritimes who come out here to work for 4 months during the summer and then go home to claim Employment Insurance off of MY hard work.

:(

I'm done now.

I hope your right. :csad: I think they just want to blame the Canadian office if the conversion goes wrong. It really bothers me that they haven't gotten around to finishing the programming on their end yet and conversion is scheduled for tomorrow.

We have had problems with them reading our documentation on prior conversions as well. No word of a lie, one of the programmers sent me an e-mail with 5 or 6 questions in it, the answers to all of which were explicitly laid out in the documentation. Since this wasn't the first time he had done this I sent a response that said, as found on line 3 of my documentation "yadda yadda yadda", as found on line 5 "so on and so forth", etc. My supervisor sent me a response back saying "please be more patient". :cmad: It's kind of hard to be patient when you spend hours documenting something and the people who should be reading the documentation obviously haven't bothered to read the first 5 lines.

You need to be more patient, red. And Hal, quit your whining and adopt a homeless person in your city. Blame Canada!

:csad: Pity that 3 years ago you didn't buy some little piece of land near town. Then you could have put a trailer on it and lived there 6 months out of the year. If you can find any way to afford it, you probably should invest in land in the nearby area.
