Netflix Superhero Film “Project Power” | Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Out of all the original Netflix movies I have watched recently this one felt the most like it would have been much better as an 8 to 10 episode series rather than a 2 hour movie. Everything just felt super underdeveloped to me from Jamie Foxx's and JGL's characters and especially the villains. As cool as the premise is it all just felt way too generic and basic and while I was never bored a lot of dramatic moments did fall flat for me, because of how lackluster the characters were outside of Dominique Fishback who is the only one really stood out IMO. Jamie Foxx and JGL are good though and there likable energy/charisma elevates this movie quite a bit, but I never got much out of there characters beyond being the most surface level good guys.

I didn't even think the powers looked all that visually stimulating either with exception of Machine Gun Kelly's and the dude who could camouflage himself. I even thought the action was pretty poorly handled too, but I just chalk that up to Joost and Shulman not being experienced enough action directors which is why they are better fits as directors for films like Paranormal Activity 3 or Nerve.

6/10

Watched it today. It was fun, though pretty basic. But I liked the three leads and I liked how unpredictable and unstable the powers (or lack thereof) were. I’d watch a sequel.

Watched it last night, was slightly disappointed overall, they just didn’t go far enough with it for me and the directing in some parts was quite poor.

The 3 leads were good, but technically JGL’s character didn’t need to be there, though he was good as always.

Would actually be surprised if we got a sequel as it closed things off pretty well. 6/10

Man, was this movie a let down... It had a few great moments, but besides that I was pretty bored. At one point I paused it to go to the bathroom, and noticed there was 55 minutes left... I was stunned because it had already felt like I had been watching for 2 hours. A very slow burn. 5/10.

I thought the film was a major let down for me. Most of the action was underwhelming, a lot of great actors were wasted after a few minutes of screen time, no superpower battles, some of the dialogue needed work, and a few other problems I had. Plus, I had other questions like what happened to the Mexican Cartel?

I can see why a lot of people said JGL wasn’t really needed. Thought Foxx and Fishback were the standouts, IMO.

Wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel, but it would probably need better writers and directors.

If I had to rank the action films this year:
The Old Guard
Extraction
Project Power

5/10

I thought The Old Guard and Extraction were much better than this and if we are talking about action sequences alone its not even close. This really felt like a half assed attempt at them wanting something that was clearly designed to be a tv show at first, but Netflix not being willing to spend the money, so instead they made it into a movie.

It's frustrating too, because you can see that the potential was definitely there, but they just didn't put enough effort into it IMO and it shows. It seemed like they didn't even want to spend more money on the powers themselves which is mainly what your watching this movie for in the first place. Oh well time to move on and hopefully the next couple of Netflix films won't end up being this disappointing or forgettable.

Disappointed in this. Thought the unique story hook had potential, but it didn't really go anywhere - and seemed a bit rushed at times. Just a bit bland overall.

Still want to read the original script as the tone was apparently more in the vein of Training Day and Collateral, which sounds awesome!

Plus, there were supposedly a lot more powers in it.

Netflix is basically making B movies with million dollar budgets at this point to get more subscribers. They still haven’t posted a profit as a company though. Don’t see how this is sustainable since they don’t sell ads.

Well that does sound a lot more interesting than the movie we got, but to make it work I really think you needed at least a capable director behind it along with a major studio backing it. I would have loved to see someone like Antoine Fuqua or F. Gary Gray helm this if that is indeed the kind of film that they were originally going for.

Well, yeah. The directors of Paranormal Activity 3 and 4 doesn’t inspire much hope.

I wonder what happened in the meantime because what we got just wasn’t as interesting.

I remember reading in an interview that the film’s directors wanted Tomlin to make the film fun yet gritty, so they encouraged him to go more in that direction.

The original ending would have been pretty bleak, IMO.

PA 3 was actually pretty good. My favorite of the bunch.

Same. I really liked PA3 and I even thought Nerve was really good for what it was, but neither of those movies show why they should have been the ones chosen to direct this movie when you really could have picked anyone else.
