Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I am curious how this works out. I like him a lot still and I think his performance in Fallout shows he might be able to pull this off. Though now I wonder if he is done with Superman.

The DCU needs a massive reboot so hope this is the first step toward it

Cavill's performance in Fallout was total crap. He can do better than that. And I seriously hope he will. I'm glad that witchers don't need much range.

Eva Green - no thanks. She can't pull off a temper. And Yen actress NEEDS that. But Kate Beckinsale is pretty spot-on looks wise.

So... let's hope Eva Green or Kate Beckinsale are in the running for Yen. If they are going high profile then Yennefer's actress definitely has to be.

I'd love them to choose someone up and coming... like Gemma Chan. She's got it all.

I thought he did fine with what he was given.

He wasn't given much, I agree, but you can't be a plank of wood like that. The face that expresses nothing. He was much better in Snyder films and in that spy flick, forgot it's name.

I wasn't blown away by Cavill in Fallout or anything, but I thought he was serviceable. I was more impressed with his work in Man From UNCLE. The problem is that the direction and script were terrible, and Armie Hammer was totally miscast as Kuryakin. I mean they totally handled that character wrong, but whatever.

All things considered, Geralt is sort of against Cavill's usual type. That could be good, or it could be a bad thing. We shall see. If Cavill were in the show, I'd have more expected him to play like a really fresh faced, well put together royal family member or a knight and not an unkempt Geralt.

Cavill will have to flex his acting muscles here. Maybe he can. We shall see.

Also, don't use an American accent. His American accent sounds fakey. Just let him use his natural accent.

I played Witcher games with English voice acting and I felt various British accents fit the world really well. No need to push for America accent for sure.

Geralt is a grumpy type, Cavill didn't play grumpy characters as far as I know. So it's gonna be a new thing for him. I hope he manages.

A lot of characters would have American accents in the games. Like most of the Witchers all sounded American such as Lambert, Eskel, Vesemir, Geralt, and even Letho. Triss Merigold has a flat American sounding accent. The other Lodge sorceresses sounded British.

Toussaint, everyone had a more Western European type of accent. For Skellige, it sounded like they went with a more Irish/Scottish brogue.

But my general problem with Cavill is that his American accents rarely sound convincing. So I would just say drop it here.

Yeah, I'm not saying the games didn't have American accents. Just that British accents feel at home in the world of Witcher. In this sense no need to force anyone into an accent. It felt that low-born people had British accents more frequently in the games. Of course, people who played the games are used to Geralt's American accent, but if they hired Cavill, he won't have that gruff. So might as well get used to something different.

Well this will take more from the books anyway. The audio books used a heavy British accent for Geralt. And this show is taking more from the books anyway. So having that sort of British bent to the show would make sense for an English language audience.

Cavill seems to struggle with using an American accent, so I'd prefer if he used a more natural British one for the show if it comes down to it.

Maybe its just me but i dont hear him struggling in English. Even then, this is another version of our world so him sounding the way he does wouldnt seem out of place

My Geralt in TW3 had a low trimmed beard and the long hair with the sides shaved. Always thought it looked the best

I don't know the games or the character that well, but I'm happy for Cavill. Hopefully this will turn out good. Just my two cents, but I thought he was great in M:I Fallout. Not some earth-shattering performance by any means but I liked him in his role. He was also really good in UNCLE and MoS, even if the movies themselves had problems. Hopefully this role will be meaty and allow him to show off his acting chops like he was able to back in The Tudors. And please for the love of God let him keep his English accent.

Ultimately, what will make or break the adaptation for me - supporting cast. Ciri, Yennefer and other. Geralt isn't a hard character to cast.

Not inspiring casting for Geralt, but I guess Cavill wanted to do it and he was best actor with most star power they could get. Certainly will check it out.
