Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

The music is incredible, I can listen to "The Fields of Ard Skellig" on repeat, used to be so soothing.

On another note

Another reason the games being ignored sucks for me is that the video game interpretation of Toussaint in blood & wine is one of the most beautiful things I've seen period
.

Agreed, also Iorveth only exists in the games and not in the books so wont make an appearance either which is a shame as hes a great character same for Letho.

Stories I hope get somewhat adapted in live action are A Grain of Truth and The Witcher, which are great standalone twisted fairy tale stories.

The Last Wish short story has to be adapted. Its a good introduction to Dandelion and Geralt and their friendship. It has humor, magic, action, and it is the origin of Geralt and Yennefer's relationship.

I'm curious how they will want to format this from a narrative perspective. But yeah, I would want to see the Last Wish in live action and how Geralt and Yennefer first formed their bond since that's basically the story's OTP.

Yes some of this has a lot of Geralts backstory that makes him what he is, such as the The Witcher short giving him his infamous scar. So I would hope this book is used a fair amount too, hope the "Butcher of Blavakin" scene is included too as its another main part of Geralts mythos.

Yup another great story that really offers a great picture of Geralt and the theme of choosing between "the lesser of two evils."

I will be curious to see if they do a fairly linear plot though, or if they will incorporate flashbacks and past stories.

It's his Butcher of Blaviken story I look forward to seeing on film. Man, the goose bumps at the thought.

I would like that story, but I don't want to make any assumptions on how they are going to adapt this and how the narrative will work.

They might want to keep a forward progressing narrative like Game of Thrones and only have flashbacks once in a while.

I see this thing being canceled after 2 seasons because it will cost Netflix's too much.

To be perfectly honest, if it's two seasons of just awesome dark fantasy material with amazing production values, I'd be totally fine with that.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich to Adapt ‘The Witcher’ for Netflix (EXCLUSIVE)

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will adapt fantasy saga “The Witcher” into a series for Netflix, Variety has learned.

Like the stories on which it is based, Netflix’s “The Witcher” chronicles monster hunters who, with training and body modification, develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly beasts. Hissrich will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Her writing and co-executive producer credits include Marvel-produced superhero dramas “The Defenders” and “Daredevil” for Netflix and Starz’s “Power.” She is represented by UTA.

Hissrich's previous show credits include Power, Daredevil, and Defenders, and she wrote multiple episodes of all those shows. Seems like a good choice overall. Looks like this will be her first major showrunner type of gig.

Seems like we still still be a ways off from getting actual footage if they only just now found a showrunner. But since this is a Netflix production, I hope that means they've secured a nice level of financing so the production values for this show are going to be comparable to Game of Thrones, Marco Polo, etc.

Didn't really like The Defenders, haven't watched Power, but I like Daredevil. So I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

She got a writing credit for the third episode of Defenders, which I felt was one of the stronger episodes. That's where the team comes together for the first time and has that knock down drag out fight in The Hand's building. Plus that was more Drew Goddard and Marco Ramirez show. So most of the major creative decisions were being made by people them and Jeph Loeb. So it seems at least proven herself reliable to the higher-ups to be in these writing rooms and get the opportunity to take the reins a little bit.

I thought Defenders had a really good first half and then declined in the second half. The Hand just turned out to be weak, underwhelming villains after all the buildup from the previous series.

Seems like she's being given an opportunity to helm the ship here. At least she has experience writing these dark, serious, genre-heavy Netflix shows. Also...she's not Scott Buck :D

OK, they are basically using the world map from the games as research :)

I'd say that's a good sign.

As far as I know, Sapkowski never created an official world map for his books.

If Zach McGowan isn't cast as Geralt I might riot. He was one of the best parts of Black Sails and his portrayal of Charles Vane sold me on him.

He also seems to be open to doing it.

he's fine... but not my top pick. i am sold on Ludwig.

Ah right, that is good.

I really can't think of any actor I see fit.

Geralt is not a 25 year old man. And most of these tv actors might look the part, but they're all pretty bland-to-bad actors.

Nikolaj is perfect for the role, but I doubt he'd want to sign up for another large sword and sorcery show.

Zach McGowan from Black Sails is my choice:
