Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Yeah that “first look” thing was awful. What were they even thinking releasing that? “OHHH this’ll get people hyped! Henry in a leftover Legolas wig that we stuck on with some duct tape, drinking a 5-hour energy bottle! F*** YEAH!”
Yeah, whenever I see something like that it gets me worried on 2 counts. Firstly that the main character could actually look like that without a significant improvement in subsequent shots, and also how did everyone involved in the decision to create and release that come to that decision. Where is the quality control and judgement that none of those people stopped it. The difference in reaction to the 2 is like night and day.

I love the look of Witcher 3, so the more it looks like it, the better. The silver sword has a bit of the earlier game design to it as well imo. I am just surprised. If I am honest, I feel like if they could, they'd just go with the look of the games as much as they could. They figured out how to make the world come to life, in a way that actually looked semi-practical for television/film. But I also think that would result in the author losing his ****. That CDPR isn't involved in this in all just feels... well wrong.
Always involve CDPR. That is the truth. Even if you’re just making a pizza or getting your taps changed.

I don't think the two swords on the back is viable in real life. Sure, he could have put one on a waist scabbard, but if Geralt only ends up with one sword, it won't bother me.

Swords on the back aren't viable. They are too long. Means your arms aren't long enough to draw them. You might possibly get away with a katana because they are very short. But one of the advantages of a katana is the quick draw attack which is lost if wearing it on your back.

What happened with their initial first look? It's like night and day

It was a costume test to see how he'd look.
It's why we shouldn't get too carried away by initial looks as they are subject to change.

Historically people did carry swords on their back, even in the British Isles (more common in other places). This was especially true while travelling and even more so if you didn't own a horse. Not too impossible to unsheathe a sword from back, though impractical. Much easier with curved blades. As for sheathing a sword, if you must do it while it is on your back, there have been sheathes built specifically for that purpose. Though that would again be impractical because if you draw your sword to use, you want to clean it before putting it away.

Geralt is a traveler. Carrying his swords on his back makes sense.

They might carry them on their back while travelling but not into battle.

People have found ways of making it work by adjusting the sheath but that leaves the swords exposed to the elements. It just isn't practicle

I still say Yennefer looks too young for Cavill but Gerald looks good would have like a couple of scars but hey as long as they stay true to the characters I'm aboard just replayed Witcher 2 and 3 recently and witcher 3 remains best fantasy game I've ever played it overtook Zelda Ocarina of Time for me and that is not an easy task lol

Swords from the back just looks cooler. Plus, this is a fantasy series.

Secondly, I wouldn't call Yennefer shady. I would more consider her very "strong-willed." She's a "strong-willed, emancipated woman" :hrt::hrt::hrt:

Rule of cool always wins. They'll just do what they do with other films and shows and just cut away as he's drawing the sword.

It works for Blade! Shad University seems to think it can work.

Yes by having a sheath specifically designed so he could do it. There are no historical examples of a similar scabbard. It would leave the sword exposed to the elements.

There are no such things as Witchers eithers so swords on the back seems like the least implausible thing here.

I also hope they don't go cheap on the monsters after all Gerald does hunt them man can't wait for this after the Turd sandwhich that was GOT S8 hope Netflix can pull this off THIS IS THERE GAME OF THRONES if handled correctly

I have no problem with it. I was just replying to a post that said 2 swords on the back is not viable in real life.

They don't carry them into battle at all anymore. :cwink:

It isn't practical to use a sword as your primary weapon into battle (should be a pole arm) but here we are. Can you do it? Yep.

And it was called a sidearm (not a backarm) for a reason.

What I always wonder about carrying a sword on the back is how they hell you would get it back in the scabbard. A video game character can make it look effortless but in real life, trying to put it back would be a royal pain in the ass, lol.

Just dropped by to say that that new photo looks cool and accurate.

Looks like the silver sword is there too:

Does Cavill have yellow eye's? To me it looks like he does but dont know if its just me wanting to see them or just the camera angle, lol.

By taking the scabbard off. :hehe:

You wouldn't want to sheathe your sword with blood and guts all over it. Not good for the sword.
