New Constantine Movie?

I never want to see Keanu Reeves play Constantine again. I like Reeves and all, but he can't play every role, nor should he. He wasn't a good Constantine.

I concur. If Keanu is going to make the transition into the superhero genre, then he should be saved for a Ghost Rider.

Look, for what it is, Constantine is a damn good movie whose reputation seems to have grown over the years. Lawrence is an underrated director.

But Reeves is so goddamn miscast in that role. Reeves' casting was more of a relic of the days of getting a "name" to a movie and in turn the character isn't as faithful. He tried, and he does a fine job, but he's just not Constantine. Get Colin Farrell and call it a day.

Matt Ryan was a REALLY good Constantine. I understand not using him but Keanu did not embody the character well or in the spirit of the comics.

Now if the sequel turned out to be a mash-up of Matt vs. Keanu, I might check it out.

Think of this as less of an adaptation of the comics (that's what the TV show was for), and a sequel to the film which has developed its own cult following. And yes, who knows, they may do a multiverse thing with different John Constantines but the star power of Keanu leading the charge.

I liked Ryan too from what I saw of him. As much as I like Reeves in the movie, best to leave that casting in 2005. He's just one of the most miscast roles in a comic book film.

I enjoyed the first movie, but Keanu is nothing like the character. Especially if he's now doing the role looking like John Wick... I would've preferred a reboot with a different actor. But he's a big name, so I get it.

Also member berries is the default phase in Hollywood in the last few years.

If you knock out not having the British accent, I think Keanu is actually really good casting for Constantine. He can do the hard boiled stuff, carries the inner sadness with a tough exterior, he can be funny, he can be scummy. Just think of this as an alt version that was born in the us instead.

Ok yea, this is a little strange considering Matt Ryan was so damn good in the role but, Keanu’s career renaissance these last few years really does make this a no brainer. My only thing is I really would love to see Colin Farrel take on this role. Just because I know he’d absolutely kill it. However, I’m still insanely excited at the prospect of a new Keanu-Constantine movie because the original film was damn good. Regardless if it was a good representation of the comic version of the character. I love Constantine and the original Hellblazer comics are freakin amazing and some of the best horror out there. As long as they can give this a damn good story I’m all for it. I still just really wish we could see Farrel take on the role. Maybe they could fold in some of the ideas and concepts they’ve had over the years for that Justice League Dark movie they kept talking about. That’d be sweet. Seeing Swamp Thing and Keanu’s Constantine on screen together could be SWEET.

I'd love to see Keanu reprise this role again. I loved the first movie to no end. :D

WOAH indeed. :funny:

Look, I already got my definitive, comic accurate Constantine with Matt Ryan. If they're not bringing him back, bring back Keanu.

Especially now during his John Wick resurgence.

I liked Keanu's take, I watched his Constantine not knowing the character beforehand.

I wonder if I was a fan of the character and knew him well before watching Keanu's performance if I had disliked instead due to the dissimilarities.

So with JJ as a producer is this the possible kick off for JL Dark?
Isn't that what he was suppose to be working on?

Don't you dare get my hopes up cause Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Etrigan getting their own films too would make me explode. :argh:

Loved the first film.

Keanu IS Constantine. So happy with this news!

Well, that’s a surprise. I’ve always loved this movie but I’m a little wary of returning to this version of Constantine after 17 years even with Francis Lawrence involved. I do wonder if Rachel Weisz would be interested in returning because I really liked her character a lot in the original. Maybe she has a case where things are getting supernatural so she seeks out Constantine again.

Or get Matt Ryan, Jenna Coleman, and whichever actor JJ wanted for his black Constantine (if there was ever any truth to that rumour) and get it multiversal in here :o.

For those of you familiar with the character from the comics and its story arcs, which ones do you think they will draw from this time around for this film?

I was doing a little bit of browsing online, and I came across a few that might work. There’s one called Original Sins, which is a series of loosely connected stories that delve more into Constantine’s character, but a pivotal part of the story has John playing both sides of a small town religious cult and a demon and his army against each other. There’s a story where he is locked in a prison that explores and critiques the US penal system. One arc deals with him trying to find the killer of a woman that is haunting him. I mean, there’s tons of examples:
The Greatest John Constantine Hellblazer Stories

They’ll probably go with something along the lines of the first one. Considering what it entails and the current US climate, and the fact that it’s a bit more of a smaller, contained story, it would be perfect fodder for a movie plot. Plus, you could draw parallels between that situation and his major past mistake with losing Astra to hell. Would also be a great opportunity to have a few small flashbacks with a de-aged Keanu Reeves and delve more into his backstory and why he operates the way he does and got his cynical attitude.

Just some ideas.

J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella are producing the film through Bad Robot in association with Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures. Goldsman is also slated to write the screenplay. The involvement of Abrams is somewhat surprising because he was developing a Constantine TV series for HBO Max. Reeves’ return to the role suggests that the HBO Max project probably won’t happen now.

Abrams, and Goldsman I am out. Don't like their work.

In regards to JJ Abrams, while the quality of his directing usually varies, his work as a producer is usually pretty good or at least decent. As far as Goldman is concerned, he is 50/50 in terms of quality and execution. Sometimes, you get a Batman and Robin, other times you get a Strange New Worlds.

With Francis Lawrence coming back to direct, I am a lot more hopeful that this will be good. At least for me, he hasn’t made a bad film. Red Sparrow I can’t speak to, but all of his films that I’ve seen usually range from decent to genuinely great. He’s only gotten better as a director over the years, so I’m even more excited to see what he does with this with the experience he’s gained since directing the first Constantine. I am also hopeful that he’ll have a ton of input on the script and do rewrites with another writer, so I’m not as worried about Goldsman being attached.
