Ok, the last time I did this, I tried treating the DTL like it's always been treated. This time, I think we'll treat it a bit more like the RPG Fight Club.

A big downfall with previous seasons are players who commit to play, but either can't or don't stick with the game. I think this time we're going to spell out and require the commitment up front, as well as try and streamline things, thereby lessening the burden required by both writers and readers.

Basically, we want this to be fun, not a chore.

So, as the first step, if you wish to own a team, I present to you the all new DTL application. (You do not need to fill out this app if you only wish to read and vote on matches.)

Dream Team League Season VII Application

Screen Name:
Co-Owner Screen Name (if applicable):

Team Name:

Major Rules:
  • Teams consist of 5 characters; 2 Ubers, 1 Medium, 2 Regulars (think Superman & Thor, Aquaman & Vision, Batman & Spider-Man).
  • Characters can come from mainstream Marvel and DC universes including Vertigo and Wildstorm. No Amalgam.
  • Characters above a certain power level are considered too uber and are banned from use. The Silver Surfer and Green Lanterns are towards the top of legal characters.
  • You can carry a roster of 12 characters to build your team from.
  • Each week you will write a match of how your team will defeat your opponent's team.
  • Your teams are allowed 24 hours of prep-time on the battlefield before the fight where they get to see the pictures and names of their opponents. No using any outside resources during prep-time they wouldn't normally have access to.
  • You will have 2 days and 2 posts to write your prep-time (if any) and battle. Then you will have 1 day and 1 post to write a rebuttal to your opponent.
  • Then there will be 2 days for readers to vote for who they are most convinced to win.
  • Then there will be a 2 day break to rest and plan the next week's lineups.
  • The season will start with a draft, so you will need to create a draft list of potential characters for you team's roster.
  • You must be willing to commit to at least 12-14 weeks of play.
  • There will be at least two bye weeks without play to rest. Extra days for writing and voting may be granted for holidays.
  • Occasional theme weeks will occur throughout the season to spice things up (special battlegrounds, mind-swapping, regulars only, etc...)
  • In all matters, final decision rests solely with the Commissioner and are final.
  • Sign your screen name here to indicate you have read and agree to these, and all other, rules:

What can you bring to the game (two full sentences, minimum):

Do you have any ideas or suggestions (not required):

What days are you most likely to be able to write and read (weekends only, weekdays only, any day, specific days, etc...):

We're looking for either 8, 10, or 12 teams this season. Previous experience has shown that more teams is not always a better thing, so if there is enough interest to warrant more than 12 teams, we suggest teaming up with another player. Even if you do not get a team, we welcome your participation in reading and voting on matches, as well as joining in with all discussions. And we'll be sure to keep you in mind for next season, or in case a team needs a new owner this season.

You can find a more detailed list of rules used last season here. There will be an opportunity to discuss possible rule changes before the season starts, so if you have any ideas or questions, feel free to speak up in this thread.

One important rule that will be strictly enforced is NO FLAMING! This became a serious problem in previous seasons. Talking **** is fine. Even arguing is good. But flaming will not be tolerated. First offense will result in a one week suspension and forfeiture of match. Second offense will result in expulsion from the League for the season.

Is this going to be full story format again?

The way I'm seeing it, you can write it however you want. But you only get 2 (maybe 3) posts to tell your prep+battle. So there is a character limit.

And there will only be a single rebuttal for each side, allowing another post for that. I want to try and really streamline this.

You know I'm down. Especially with it being streamlined and set up to kick out the *****ewads before they can get settled in.

Time for the Blazing Horde to make their return.

How long must the draft lists be, Wieg? And I take it the draft will be like the old ones, i.e. serpentine style?

And on another note...a trip down memory lane...

Special thanks to Tropico and his genius for making the pic. What would we have done without that Rican bastard. :yay:

Though hopefully a lot of the drama can be cut from this revival.

Depends on the number of teams.

For each team in the League, your list should have 12 characters. So for a 10 team league, draftlist should be 120 characters long. (96 for 8 teams, 144 for 12 teams).

Now, this is the minimum you need to guarantee you get a character from your list each round (meaning that even if all the other teams picked characters from your list, you'd still get 12 that you wanted).

I will not accept any draft list with fewer then the minimum. It's a headache that I'm going to avoid. But it's easy to come up with a list that big. The DTL Update thread still has lists of characters of all three power rankings. Hell, in Contest of Marvels, we had draft lists of 512 characters, so you could always pull from that.

Right on. Only negative I can think of in that, is that it may throw some people off having to come up with 120 characters. But that's not really too big of a deal, what with all the lists floating around. And it would also help make sure that only those with definite interest sign up.

You ever send out PMs to some of the old crew, like Corp, Tim, the Hebrew Halfling, and LadyVader?

I'd love to join, but I just failed two quizzes in one course, and when I'm normally an A student that's a freakin bad sign.

I will watch and enjoy though :)

I'm thinking I'll rejoin for a season, now that I need something to keep me occupied, and I plan on picking an actual GOOD team this time.

That you will. With the draft, everybody should have a decent team, and not have to worry about picking up scrap or obscure characters.

Hmm... I'm considering. CoM is on hold for the time being due to lack of interest but it will be restarting soon and I'm not sure if I have the time to handle both. Not to mention me still being in Survivor for up to another 4 or 5 weeks. But I've always loved the DTL even though I've not played since way back in season 2. And the limited rebuttal makes it easier to make time for so there's not pages and pages of rebuttal (might be a decent change to make in future seasons of the Contest of Marvels when/if we have more).

How long are we looking at before this starts up, W?

And this made me want to go back down memory lane a little....

Not sure when it'll start up again. Might not be until the end of the month, depending on how long it takes to get owners and hammer out any rule changes.

Also, when I say streamlined, I mean that entire battles + rebuttals take up a maximum 6-8 posts (3 or 4 posts for each side). So, unless we get tons of votes, battle threads will be a single page long.

That's good. One of the things I always hated was having to sift through pages of ******** arguments over character powers and such to find **** relevant to the actual match.

That, and it will hopefully keep things from getting too heated.

Hmmm, what? Hmmm, I'm in? Hmmm, I'm interested? Hmmm, I think I'll pass? Hmmm, my brain just farted?

Hmm, he's really the messiah and is too good for this world.

I think it's "Hmmm...I'm smoking some top notch Dutch **** and not sharing..."

You can still pack a lot of **** in a single post (especially if you're not quoting everything), but at least it'll be confined to the front page.

I'll get in on this. I think I understand it, and it's best to learn by doing.
