Enjoy the action sequences in the new film, "Night at the Museum?"

Moviegoers can thank Richmond native Larry Blanford for the imagery.

The 1977 Richmond High School graduate was the second unit, or action, director of photography for the film in early 2006.

This was Blanford's second film with Ben Stiller, having been the second unit director of photography for "Along Came Polly."

"Night at the Museum" also gave Blanford a chance to work with a classic television and film star.

"Dick Van Dyke is 80 years old and amazing," Blanford said. "He is energetic, professional and above all, a gentleman. He makes everyone around him feel comfortable and does what needs to be done to get whatever shot we're doing. During the filming of the fight scene, he actually strained a muscle but wouldn't stop until the shot was perfect."

Blanford, the son of Virginia "Billie" Blanford of Richmond who was home for Christmas, has had a non-stop workload since fall 2005 when he did second unit direction on the film "Smokin' Aces."

"Smokin' Aces" follows the efforts of several people to take out a sleazy magician who has agreed to turn state's evidence against the Vegas mob. The film, scheduled to open nationwide Jan. 26, includes Ben Affleck, Jeremy Piven, Ryan Reynolds, Andy Garcia and Alicia Keys.

In May, Blanford started work on "The Kingdom" with Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner.

"While in the third week of shooting, I then got called to interview as the Main Unit Director of Photography on the sequel to 'Fantastic Four,' (on which Blanford was second unit director of photography).

"Apparently, it was a decent interview as Tim Story, director, hired me as the DP. Finally, making the leap from second unit to main unit. (It) wouldn't have hurt to do something smaller first, as opposed to the $130 million budget on 'FF2'... but what the hell," Blanford said.

"I left for Vancouver on July 15th and got back to L.A. right before Christmas. It was a long, hard shoot (80 shoot days) but I'm quite pleased with the end result. Jessica Alba was a peach along with the rest of the cast ... so that made life a bit easier. Although we wrapped principal photography there is still a bit to shoot. I'm headed off to Hong Kong and Thailand in a couple of weeks to shoot some background photography for the third act," he said.

"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" is scheduled for a June release.

The move from second unit to main unit has long been a goal of Blanford, who has become known in Hollywood for his action and aerial cinematography. He got his start in the Air Force where he did aerial shots for the "Top Gun" movie because only authorized military personnel were allowed in the jet cockpits.

Among his credits are second unit direction on "Yours, Mine and Ours," "Fantastic Four," "Taxi," "Along Came Polly," "Paycheck," "Minority Report," "Tears of the Sun," and the Hoosier film, "Madison."

He also worked on "xXx," "The Rock," "Fly Away Home," "Under Suspicion" and "Broken Arrow," among others

^ So the budget for FF2 is $130m? That sounds a little low for an FF movie with both SS and Galactus.

You have been spoiled by SR and Xmen3 no doubt lol. 200 million movies were unreal a couple years ago (yeah I know about waterworld).

130 million should be enough if they have been careful in pre and post production and Fox is very good at that well mostly (Xmen 3 had all those people so you understand).

nevertheless it probably will not stop at 130 so we wait to hear what the final bill will be.

This story may have been posted here back in May (it's dated May 10th) but I didn't recall it. It's an interview with FF2 screenwriter Don Payne at Cinematical.com:
http://www.cinematical.com/2006/05/10/cinematical-interview-with-super-ex-girlfriend-scribe-don-payne/

An excerpt:

Cinematical: Are you a big fan of old-school comic books / modern-day superhero flicks?

Don Payne: Yes and yes. I grew up on Marvel Comics. Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Captain America, The Avengers, The Invaders, The Inhumans, The Hulk, X-Men. I could go on... I know it sounds goofy, but those characters helped form the person I grew up to be. I think any real fan knows what I'm talking about. One of the reasons I wanted to do Fantastic Four 2 was because I wanted to take my son to the premiere.

Cinematical: Critical and fan response to the first Fantastic Four was ... mild, yet the flick was one of last summer's biggest hits. How tough is it to write an adaptation of a really beloved super-team? What steps do you take to ensure that a sequel's an improvement?

Payne: I think you take a look at what worked and what didn't work, and you go from there. Certainly it's impossible to take something that's so beloved by millions of hardcore fans and make something which is going to please everyone. The nation of geeks (of which I'm a proud citizen) can be a little negative out of the gate, to say the least. But I'm trying to write the Fantastic Four movie I would like to see. I'm hoping my brethren will feel the same way when all is said and done.

I hope so too. I really hope so.

I thought the budget was going to be more than that.Guess its not how much money you have but what you do with it that counts.

Oh and i really love that we seem to be going globetrotting in this movie - Washington DC, New York, London, Shanghai and now Hong Kong and Thailand. The movie really is much bigger in scale and its got to be with SS.FF2 is possibly Epic?

I saw that 130 figure posted on IMBD months ago. ( And we know how reliable they are ). And that was before Rothman came out and said no expence would be spared on the Surfers SFX. So I'm sure it is more than that reported 130.

If the production cost is $130M sans marketing, that's actually a very solid figure.

I'm sure that is without marketing cost. I think marketing for this film will be more then the 1st one, because of the Surfer. They will hit that heavly.

Well its coming straight from the DOP a person who should know so i'm inclined to believe him.

LS, your avvy scares me. I thought this was scary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98A-cTra52E but that beats the cake.:ninja:

We all have seen that throwing money at a movie does not mean suscess. Look at SR. It's what you do with the money that counts. You can throw all the money you want at a pig, but you still have a pig. You have a bad story, and bad actors, you can throw all the money you want at it, and you'll end up with a very expensive bomb on your hands. I have said all along, this movie has the potential to be epic. You take the FF, add in Dr. Doom, Silver Surfer, AND Galacuts, and stick them all in 1 movie. It does not get anymore epic in the comic universe Marvel, or DC then that.

Not if they made a Kingdom Come movie or Watchmen.:cwink:
Heh. I always thought Tyra would make an okay looking Storm. LOL

lol

Yeah, I have been spoiled with 200M budgets latley and Spider-Man 3 coming out boasting a proposed budget of 250M didn't help. But still, I was expecting something within 150-160 range for FF2.

^ Budgets include the actors salaries and Fantastic Four (when the actors were signed) didn't have any real big names that get paid 10-20 million each. Actually the first FF film was originally budgeted at under 100 million and then thanks to The Incredibles...Fox decided to pump another 20 million into the pic to do some reshoots, or add some new scenes. I'll bet the budget will wind up higher in the end.
