Actually, thinking about the other episodes where major cast members die, I think "A Hole in the World"/"Shells" might take the cake for most touching death. Fred's death was horribly harrowing for a lot of reasons--she'd finally gotten together with Wesley and was really happy, Angel and Spike could've prevented it but needed to sacrifice her for the greater good, Wesley had to basically sit and watch Fred die, powerless to help her, etc. Just a horrible ordeal for all involved.
what the hell? You may not like her, but Buffy has more depth than any of her characters. Personally, I think it was sort of tragic to watch the weight of responsibility take it's toll on her, even to the point where she felt like she was losing her humanity.Buffy started strong, but ended up covering old ground over and over again with the occaisional pleasant novelty or unusual element, for example the musical episode etc. It burned itse;f out too much, and the least interesting character was Buffy. She was dull and pathetic.
I agree. Actually, I think most of the first season sucked.I think the second season of Angel was vastly superior to the first. The third and the first are about even. The fourth was mostly good with more bad elements than usual. The fifth was easily the best of the series.
They turned her into a friggin Mother Theresa, shooting balls of light and ****.I liked Cordy as the uber-*****. Having the visions was a good way to make her less completely self-absorbed, but I think they went way overboard with it. She was practically a saint by season 3 and wasn't nearly sassy enough anymore.
God....I hated it when Fred died.
HATED it!
Out of all the people who deserved it in that show, she was the only person who didn't.
It just felt so un-needed to me.

Which is another reason why Fred's death was so awful (for the characters, I mean): Doyle's death was saddening, but it was over in--literally--a flash and all Angel and Cordy had was the memory of him to haunt them. Fred's death was itself a long, drawn out process, which is more tragic than just the shock of losing someone instantly, and the Angel crew (especially Wes) had to immediately deal with the fact that this inhuman thing was now going to be essentially wearing Fred's body for the foreseeable future. A physical, tangible haunting that would stay with them forever.
I suspect that's why Whedon did it. Season 5 was all about losing your way on the path to redemption, and Fred is the only one of the main characters who was relatively clean and incorruptible. If she hadn't died, she could've helped the others recognize and fight Wolfram & Hart's influence sooner; instead, her death served as a breaking point where several of the characters became even more lost. Tragic, really.God....I hated it when Fred died.

Yeah, but that's starting to annoy me a little bit. It's getting to the point where every time Whedon creates a really endearing or interesting character, you know he's going to kill them off for the shock of it.
Anya's death was direct, tactless and to the point. Just like Anya herself.
The difference is that Anya herself wasn't also LAME.![]()
