Fenrir, MGS4 is probably the best looking Japanese next gen game seen so far, and it's over or around a year until release.
It looks great sure, but next-gen is more than skin deep, honey. And in my estimation it still quite doesn't make the top 5 best looking games. It seems that the only thing Japs are good at is pushing polygon counts. Most of the special effects we've seen so far are definitely nothing impressive.
It's definately technically more proficient then anything else we've seen from Japan or at the very least you would have to include it among the front runners.
In cutscenes, yes. In gameplay, no.
Maybe you don't like the coloring choices and think it lends itself to being washed out but that's not the same as technical prowess.
I know that coloring has nothing to do with it. In fact, I kinda like the tone of MGS4. I'm a sucker for visual filters.
If you're citisizing an unfinished MGS4 for animations, I really wouldn't be using Gears as the benchmark, but whatever. The animations in question are all placeholders, who knows how much they'll change, the same goes for practically everything we've seen so far.
Maybe your pro-Sony tendencies don't allow you to, but drop the whole fangirl act and just be objective for a second. Take an hour playtest with Gears of War and just watch how lifelike the characters are. Their animations are lengthy and detailed. You can clearly see their facial expressions (especially when you botch a reload). The flow of animation is quite smooth. They breathe. They talk. All In-game. They don't need a friggin' cutscene to give the player the impression that these guys are
alive. I want to see that in MGS4 and all next-gen games from this point onward.
You can obviously expect it to look a lot better leading up to release, and I disagree with you saying it looks so-so, but then again I do really care to have that debate with idiots like WHF trolling around in his typical ******ed fashion. He;d be better suited admitting his dreams where it's just him and another guy in situations where heterosexual guys would have a girl in the place of the guy then trolling this game and anything else that doesn't fit into his very narrow comfort zone. It's not looking amazing yet or anything, but you can really tell on the HD version that it's not average.
I also got the HD version of the GDC trailer that has those Metal Gears kicking the trucks and all that and it looks
fabulous. But when I look at the HD gameplay footage it's just...meh. I don't doubt Kojima and his team will improve the looks of the game by the time it is released, but so far, it appears that MGS4 is also following the MGS tradition of the visuals given emphasis in cutscenes rather than in gameplay. MGS4 will be a treat to
watch, that's for sure, but I'm not so enthusiastic about how good will it look in-game.
EDIT: The animations in AC aren't anything special, they just have a LOT of canned animation routines, there's no obsurd fuildity or detail to them. Shadow of the Colossus has better animation then AC by a landslide.
Granted, the transition of one animation to the other looks quite choppy at this stage, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the vast number of animations they've got for different things and the level of detail in it. And come on, this is the Prince of Persia team we're talking about, creators of arguably the best, most smoothly animated game from last-gen. There's no way they'd botch this up. Plus, even at this stage, it still looks infinitely more impressive as a next-gen game during gameplay than MGS4 and that's my point all along.
