New LL Interview-Translated Into English From French

I liked the first film, although it wasn't perfect but I like the direction this new film is going. Dr. Banner being chased by the military and Abomination, while he seeks a cure for his condition could make for a great action. I just hope it has plenty of heart as well.

The Incredible Hulk : Interview/preview from Louis Leterrier.

When we last talked, you mentioned your dream of directing a major science fiction movie. Do you consider your dream achieved now that you’re directing Hulk 2?

Overachieved. I truly realize the great opportunity I have been given. In the actual state of pre-production, I can make the movie I really want.

How is it going between you, Marvel and Avi Arad?

Marvelously. And what’s extraordinary about Marvel, and more since they became independent, is that they are motivated people who want to make a good movie and are always looking for ideas to make it better. That’s the reason Ang Lee and Eric Bana were in the first movie. They are not the kind of people that obviously come to mind for making a production like this but are genuine artists that could elevate Hulk to something more than just a simple action film and, in my opinion, achieved it. Marvel gave them creative freedom, like they did with Sam Raimi on Spider-Man when hiring Tobey Maguire. Don't get me wrong, I would never compare myself to theses guys, that would be out of place, but now I better understand the pleasure they had making these movies the way they wanted.

Have you already selected your actors?

I have some ideas. I can tell you that they are not people you expect to see in these kinds of movies. Marvel and I agree on this and they consider that the movie doesn’t need an action hero like Bruce Willis or Tom Cruise.

What can you tell us about the story?

In fact, it’s the story that convinced me. The first time they contacted me, I was very hesitant. They came back because they loved Unleashed. We met and they told me about the story. I must admit, it took me 30 minutes to say yes. As a moviegoers and a fan of the character, they were handing me something I always dreamed to see on the big screen. It won’t be a sequel to Ang Lee’s film but it won’t be a remake or a re-imagining either. It will be a new adventure with different characters, new intrigue, new monsters. We will quickly get to the heart of the story because I think people know the character and I don’t want to shoot 45 minutes to get to the first Hulk-out or about the reasons that make him a monster. The first movie had a lot of Bruce Banner’s story and a little of Hulk’s. This one will be 50/50.

Rumor has it that you convinced everybody when you showed storyboards of two completely wild scenes that didn’t have anything
to do with the original script. Is it true?

It’s Stéphane Levallois who works with me on the artistic direction of the film. Stéphane is an exceptional artist, rare and complete, and this movie needs his eye. As you must expect, I won’t tell you what those scenes are about but if I manage to put them on screen the way I imagined them, they’re going to be quite good. Avi Arad’s reaction was what I hoped for. He and his partners had never seen something like that in a movie and naturally wanted to have it in their own (laughs). And then we come back to the creative freedom we have been given; they changed the script to put those scenes in.

Lastly, what can we expect of the character’s design? Will you use the same as the previous movie?

No, he will be truly different. It’s in Stéphane Levallois’ hands. If you only take the face, it needs to be redesigned for the SFX , on one hand, but also because the first Hulk had a lot of Eric Bana. And if we’re going to have a different actor for Banner, the Hulk must also be different. Also, I don’t want to have a 45 feet tall Hulk that gets bigger when he gets madder. I don’t want to make Godzilla. This Hulk will be 9 feet tall and his height won’t change. I see this character as a tortured soul, prisoner of his superpowers and always on the run by fear of hurting others. If I need to state any references, I’d say mostly Jeckyl and Hyde, Frankenstein and even Edward Scissorhands.

Editor’s note : Obviously, Louis kindly gave us the scoop on some new infos regarding the script and the special effects. But we can’t talk about it right now. We’ll get back to it in time…

LL proposed two "lunatic" scenes of action which had nothing to do with the script, the producers (Arard and co) loved them and said they could only be in a Hulk movie so they changed the script to fit in those scenes.

I can't wait!

I can't wait to hear what these sequences are:woot:

Well we know that they are going to have the movie set in New York so may be we will see a 3 way battle, Hulk vs Abomination vs Military. Hulk and Abomination are smashing each other into buildings, throwing vehicles at each other and stuff. The Military shoot a missile at Abomination, he flicks it away into a large building that is about to fall and land on a lot of people, Hulk shows his heroic side by stopping the builiding from collapsing!

That would be great for one of the scenes!

MARVEL has got me so ****ing pumped for there movies! I mean they couldn't have chosen better!

ALL OF THIS SOUNDS SO AWESOME, AS A HUGE HULK FAN, I CAN'T WAIT!!!:eek::eek::D:up::up:

It's gonna be damn fun. I wonder if the Military is going to evacuate the city somehow and there will be some stragglers the Hulk will have to save while fighting The Abomination.

PUNY PEDESTRIAN: "OH, SAVE ME HULK, SAVE ME!!!"

HULK: "HULK SMASH STUPID PUNY PEDESTRIAN FOR BEING STUPID ENOUGH TO STAY BEHIND DURING SUPERHERO/VILLAIN BATTLE, HULK SMASH, UH, AGAIN!!!" (STUPID PUNY HUMAN GETS PIMPED SLAPPED BY HULK ACROSS CITY):oldrazz::D:up:

Know what I would love though I think Marvel would be too afraid to do it? Have the Hulk prevent a terrorist attack of some sort and save thousands of people. Like imagine him seeing someone about to detonate a bomb vest and he just bear hugs him till he implodes or just throws him up about 1000ft into the air. LOL

HULK: PUNY HUMAN GO BOOM, HULK PIMP SLAP PUNY HUMAN INTO STRATOSPHE..., INTO STRATOSPHE..., INTO SPACE!!!:oldrazz::D:up:

^ LOL. He throws him up so high the friction of leaving the atmosphere detonates the bomb and at the same time makes the terrorists head explode. And while he's flying up in the air The Punisher pelts him with his Sniper rifle and Iron Man blasts him.

thanks for posting a better translation Sarg!

I wish they would have hired an American director who grew up reading the damn comic book! I'm sorry fanboys that like 9ft tall giant monsters, but the Hulk to me is a 7ft comic character. The bigger you make the Hulk the less incredible he seems! We wouldn't have this size debate if Ang Lee didn't screw up the first movie!

That's one of the things that will improve over the Ang Lee film, at least.....the Hulk remaining one constant size.

I'm sorry but considering the Hulk's width, anywhere between 7-9 ft. would be just fine with me as I don't think the difference will be noticable. Still short enough to fit in a 1 story building without his head going through the ceiling, that's all I ask in the height department.

I gotta say I totally agree with this.

I actually would prefer him closer to the 9 ft size, seeing how there are real athletes such as Yao Ming and Shaq over 7 ft tall and I think the Hulk should be visually overwhelming and imposing.....just not 25 ft worth of imposing.

....i thought he grew when he got mad? I know there comes a point in anger where he'll change to Grey hulk and grow...

Actually it goes "the madder he gets, the stronger he gets" or at least that's how it went in earlier issues of the comic [60's through the 80's]. As far as the grey Hulk goes, those are the only issues I'm missing from that time period, so I can't comment on that.

I'm also relieved somewhat of the direction they're going with the 2nd film and like the new cast and choice of Hulk's nemesis for him to smash:cwink:.

I do hope he friggin' talks this time around, I'm getting real sick of him as a mindless snarling beast. Reminds me too much of the watered down tv Hulk. I wanna hear "Hulk smash!" and "puny human" and all the other goofy things he'd say.

So you want Hulk to be 6 inches shorter than this guy?

Certainly people won't bemoan a Hulk that is only going to be 1ft 6 inches taller than a certain asian basketball player.

That giant 7'2" russian boxer...I remember Louis told me once they tried to get him in Transporter 2 or at least talked to him. I wonder if he's still in contact with him???? However no need since it appears they're gonna use Lou maybe for the motion capture and tranformation scenes.

I think you guys are gonna be praising Louis in about 13 months. When the teaser comes out all doubts will be erased though someone will be complaining about something.

You just gave me a shudder b/c I immediately thought of this in the new Hulk film

They should use Lou for motion capture and why not base the CGI loosely on him just a bit mixed with some Norton. It could be fun.
