If New Moon Doesn't Win Awards, What's the Point of Awards?

Today 7:07 PM PST by Leslie Gornstein

...and that's that Hollywood—the moviemakers and the critics—seems to kind of not like you.
In fact it just may resent you and your populist tastes real bad. At least, more than it did back when the Academy honored Titanic with the Best Picture crown.
No one can say for absolute certain whether today's Golden Globes nominations are a direct result of this film-geek resentment, or merely a schoolmarmish need to instruct us all on good taste, but it's the best guess box-office historians have got.
"Inherent in the awards process is that the Academy and other industry people want to be the ones who dictate the culture, so if the public has already chosen a movie before them, they'll naturally try to buck it," posits Brandon Gray, who runs numbers for Box Office Mojo. "Not to mention, as wannabe artistes and intellectuals, they think one must appreciate darkness, ambiguity, relativism, primitivism and the gutter among other things."
In other words, Hollywood knows you liked New Moon and Star Trek and Transformers 2—it's wallowing around in all that Twilight cash as I write this. But by nominating brutal fare like Precious and Hurt Locker for Globes and (I'm sure) Oscars, it's saying, "Here's what you should like—ya tools."
But it isn't working.
According to Gray, "2008's Oscar Best Picture nominees were the least popular as a whole in decades, despite Benjamin Button having passed $100 million at the box office," and the underdog appeal of Slumdog Millionaire.
How long has the gap between Hollywood and the masses been growing? For years now. The year 2003, when The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Seabiscuit and other popular titles were nominated, "was the last time the Best Pictures were popular as a whole. Each year since, there's been a tremendous disconnect overall."

I think he deserves it. Obviously not in the big picture of Hollywood and acting talent, but for how much attention he brought to New Moon. Summit really owes him for the amount of work he put in, both for getting into shape (it's not easy), and the insane amount of press he did to promote the movie. Better Taylor than Miley.

so they are talking of spliting one of the up coming movies? Why? I've read the books and there isn't that much there. I enjoy the books and think they are a fun read but they are mostly inner thoughts not stuff happening.

They will probably milk it, but it makes no sense to split the last movie. Especially when you look at the climax... blech, going through 80 pages to build up to nothing was bad in the book. Imagine the 20 minutes in the movie. :o

In the end they be gettin that $$$ regardless tho.

Finally saw this yesterday, it was enjoyable, I actually liked it better than the first. The only parts that made me cringe were when Bella and Edward were talking to each other. But I guess girls love that.

:whatever: at people voting 1s.

Really? Because from what I remember, the film was a near-unbearable mess.

In your opinion. And most people voting it 1 haven't even seen it.

Sorry, but I'll be forever lost to how this is a film of credible quality in anyone's eyes, other than the people who this is marketed to. Call me ignorant, but I just can't accept it. From Bella being one hell of an unlikeable character -- and a ****tease -- to the hilariously awful fight sequences, I just can't process it.

And that's fine. You're entitled to not like it. Just don't bash it mindlessly like many others have. ( "hur hur hur! sparkly gay vumpeers! hur hur hur!"). I mean, come on. That's just insulting it because it's "cool" to.

Actually, she's not a ****tease. If you actually saw the movies or knew the stories, you'd know what you'd be talking about.

Eh, I guess to each of their own, then. Though, I agree that if someone's going to bash or praise a film, said person should at least come off as if he/she knows what they're talking about.

If I were you I'd ignore the people voting 1. I'm sure some people who voted one truely felt that way but I think that most did it just to mess with the people who liked Twilight. I'm slowly but surely learning to ignore those people.

P.S

I love the part of your sig regarding the Spider-Man situation. I feel the exact same way. Feel free to pm me if you want to b**ch about it.

If I remember right, there was a sequence involving Bella and Jacob, in which she was feeling his body and telling him that she belonged to Edward.

I wish every person I spoke to that didn't like Twilight acted like you.

I am too, but at times it just upsets me really bad. I mean I post on a Twilight board and all day long all I hear is insults toward it. I mean seriously, why waste your time if you hate it so much?

I may take you up on that.
