Superman Returns New Singer interview "christ parallels"

That is a great interview but I believe I read that months ago, unless it is an update.

It's new to me.:woot:

It was just posted on SHP today.

Unless there was a similar interview Singer answered alot of those questions and in the same way. Its a great interview though.

ya, but that doesn't make a good and inspiring movie unfortunately.

According to you it doesnt. What would inspire you in a Superman movie?

I personally think it's less deep than he makes it out to be. And you always lose some when you make these parallels.

I'm much more comfortable with Superman as a 'protector' rather than 'saviour'. He should protect humanity from suffering the same fate as Krypton, whether it's an external or internal threat. And in that mission he finds his true place in the world (albeit an adopted one) - as one of humanity.

I like Superman in the Savior role. For instance, he stops the plane from crashing but leaves the humans to clean up the mess.

As I said on the Superman Homepage, I think Singer really laid it on thick with the Christ/Superman comparison. Sure, I don't mind seeing it there but I think Singer really went overboard. Superman is supposed to be a fun and beat up bad guys too, but SR was so damn serious. I really hope the sequel lightens the hell up.

Does everything have to have a Christ parallel?

I'm not (and i don't even practice a religion ) , and i found it powerful .. anyways , you know the Christ is not important ,only, for Christians..

hmmm.....that interview just points out to me how hypocritical I felt the movie is.....

On the one hand, they deliberately evoke Christ like images and parallels. Singer even admits that in the interview.

Now, that is obviously designed to play to a certain demographics ( religious, Christian ). Such people are more likely to be more "traditional" in their view points and values...

Yet, at the same time, Singer has Supes father an illegitimate child out of wedlock. He has a Supes that tries to make a move on another man's girl. He has a Lois that is living in an extended relationship with a man, who she is not married to.

Now, I'm not religious myself, but I would think those things above would be rather offensive to a religious, Christian audience.....

Seems that it's a perfect way of showing the dichotomy that is Superman: he has the powers of a god but the flaws of a human.

I'd hate watching Superman be completely perfect and I honestly don't think the Ward Cleaver version of Superman would function as well in a film. Personally, I love the animated series and how Superman is portrayed in the Diniverse, except for the relationship between Lois and Clark. Maybe it's just because of TV constraints with regards to subject matter, but Lois and Clark's romance on the show is about as engrossing as watching paint dry. Everything else they get right, but that one glaring thing has a gigantic chunk of what I enjoy of the mythos gone. SR had those things in there, but it was also a forced fast in regards to it as the relationship is changed and people were forced to move on. I mean, I have certain prerequisites when it comes to Superman, but then again what Superman-loving nerd like me doesn't? The interpretations of Big Blue have differed significantly over the years and I don't think there is one, absolute concrete way of telling his story. Singer isn't perfect. Superman definitely isn't. He tries his best, though.

As for the topic at hand, I didn't draw as many of the Jesus references while watching the movie as some others might've. I didn't expect to see Passion of the Krypton, and I don't think I remotely saw that. I just saw a comic book movie that had another superhero get crapped on and squeak by at the end.

Great interview that and yes i saw all those parallels and they definately added to the movie for me. Superman as a saviour and christ like figure just heightened the mythology for me.

Well Superman in SR didn't have the virtues of Christ. He left Earth for his selfish desires, betraying and giving up his resposibilities of Earthlings/Earth so he can find life on lifeless asteroids of Krypton (how can you find life on lifeless asteroids, nevermind). He hides in the bushes and peeps in on people and their conversations, invading their privacy. Forget what Lex's plan is he just wants his crystals back. He's mean to his dog too. You know this Superman is nothing like Christ.

I think this is one of the most profound statements I have ever read on these boards. :wow:

Excellent. Seriously. :yay: :super:

Singer doesn't get it. He tried to hard to make connections that weren't there.

Like Superman getting stabbed in his side by kryptonite. :whatever:

^There have always been parallels between Supes and Christ though, even in the Donner movies. Singer was just carrying on what had gone before.
