The Dark Knight new talk at the premiere - topping Jack

jack won't be topped. ledger will play a very different joker that i think will be widely accepted and loved, but won't top jack because it's not the same role. if it was...well, jack still wouldn't be topped.

Abso-bloody-exactly. You can't top Jack Nicholson; that's why he played the Joker in the first place.

Exactly.

I don't think it would be that hard for Ledger to top Jack, simply because Jack wasn't allowed to play an full version of the Joker. Nicholson didn't get to show any of the dual nature of the Joker ala killing Joke, or capture how the Joker fluctuates between a cartoon like personality to brutal killer as well as TAS did. Added to that, Nicholson didn't look like the Joker or have an iconic Joker laugh.

Now, I'm not saying Heath will do all these things, but he has an opportunity, and he's lucky because he's younger then Nicholson was and physically looks more like the Joker then Jack did.

So do I think Ledger will top Jack? I hope so. Can he? Definitely.

toppings aside, i think ledgers joker will be, in essence, a more comprehensive representation of the character, which is something id personally like to see.

mmm toppings

LOL

LOL....Yup!

:word:

I don't know if the Joker will be more realistic, but more sinister for sure. Just, a nasty mother****er.....that's a given, I think.

And I can't wait to see Christian Bale kick him around!

I'd like a good beating scene.

If there's anything Batman fans cannot complain about in B89....it's nice beating......while still funny.....that Bats gave Joker.

Caine is the wacky uncle.
He wants Alfred to dress up like Batman to fool someone. Really.

What? He did that perfectly. Making jokes and next killing someone in a horrible way.

I posted this somewhere else, but it's really needed. Please, you can't just state ANYthing. And the laughter was as Joker-ish as the most.

More than. In these veery boards we have discussed about many many actors that looks like Joker more than Ledger.

After the way you said things, sure.

Hey maybe Jack can make a cameo in TDK. Who knows.

It's very gratifying that there is such a loyal fanbase and that they are interested. But I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology; I don't really use the Internet."
And here we thought for all this time that if it hadn't been for BOF - errr - The Net and Bat-Fans that Begins would never have been made the way it was.

Yes, Jack's joker did do that, but...he didn't seem to have the flair and elegance the Joker displays in the comics. He seemed a little too....serious sometimes, there wasn't as much of the random insanity I was used to seeing in the Joker that was displayed in the comics and TAS as much. Jack's Joker always seemed to do things to achieve a purpose, while in the comics many times the Joker does the things he does just because he can. Now, none of this is Jack's fault respectively, it was the way the story was developed.

I should have made myself clearer. Jack didn't look as much like the Joker recently portrayed as Ledger does. Now, yes there are actors out there that look more like the Joker then Heath, but I was simply pointing out that Ledger looks more like the Joker today simply because he's younger and skinner then Jack. I'm not saying anything against Jack because it's not like he could help it, but I'm merely stating a fact. The way the Joker is displayed today is as a tall, slender man probably around his mid 30's. Again, it wasn't Jack's fault he didn't look like this, but that is the way the Joker is displayed today.

And his laugh? Well I suppose we just have different opinions on that. In my view, it just didn't have the Joker-ish quality. Jack never really had bursts of insane laughter that the Joker is often prone to. Now, I know it's unfair to expect a Hammil-like cackle, because I don't think anyone can top that, but I would have liked to see him display those crazy laughing fits that the Joker shows more often.

See, Jack never really seemed to act crazy enough to be the Joker. He acted crazy to be sure, but in my eyes, he didn't seem to attain the level of insanity that the Joker conveys. I think one of the reasons I didn't like his Joker as much was because TKJ was my favorite interpretation of the Joker. When I saw that the Joker could have been a normal guy, a nice guy, like everyone else, who just had a really really bad day and went nuts, it stuck with me more then a guy who's already a bad guy, has a bad day, and then goes nuts....but really, how much left did he have to snap? I mean, he already killed people, and had no qualms about doing it.

Now, I don't think Jack did a bad job, on the contrary, B89 was my favorite Batman movie until BB, and I still love it, but I just think that Ledger definatley has an opportunity to provide us with a better Joker, or at least, a Joker I would prefer over the one we've already seen.

I hope you won't blame me if I only read nitpicking there. Too serious sometimes, a little too not crazy enough, the laugh wasn't exactly the Joker's (supposing there is a real Joker to make comparisions)

It's ok if you like TKJ, I love it, but Joker has a long history and several interpretations. I really felt you were just bashing Nicholson for no reason.

Caine said that because he is a good friend of Jack Nicholson and he respects him a lot as an actor.

Personally, i think that Jack's joker was decent, but it could be much better. Was more jack being jack in a joker costume, than joker himself. But as Jack have a screen personality very similar to the joker behaving, it was decent.

I think that Ledger is a great actor and he will give us a different version of the joker, i dont know what version, but surely different.

Jack nicholson face looks as the joker face, mainly in the first batman comics. But the body and the age are totally different.

Apparently it's impossible for another actor to find a fellow peer's work genuinely engaging and memorable, without doing it as a sign of courtesy.

Surely that if Caine said that, he thinks in this way. But there are a lot of profesional courtesy in his sentence.

Except Cain was the one that brought up Jack in the first place. I guess if the interviewer asked Cain what he thought of Jack's performance, then any answer he would've given can be considered just professional courtesy. But that's not what happened.

Add to the fact Cain didn't even say "we're going in a different direction, so there is no comparison warranted", but instead, "you have got to top Jack"...well, I think that speaks for itself.
