Haha, you guys are funny.

This Wednesday is going to be the BEST ever! Well, besides having a 20 minute rough edit for my documentary due, an exam in my world climates class - which, by the way, I have a D in - and two papers due for two seperate classes. BUUUUUT NEW X-MEN COMES OUT! So I guess that makes it all worth while?

Sometimes comics make it all better.....:cwink:

Especially when that comic has been your favorite book for about two years now!

So I jumped on this book today...and very happy that I did. Good stuff.

Oooo bravo!

I'm excited to pick up the issue tomorrow! Although it'll essentially just TEASE me for this storyline, which I'm very excited to read.

Meh, As long as you're here now, and you like it, that's what's important. Of course I'll say if you haven't read the past issues, do so. But jumping on like this isn't a bad idea either.

DEFINITELY read past issues. But, if you only want the most recent and relevant history of these characters, start with New X-Men 20.

(Although an even richer history can be found in New Mutants (2003) 1-13 and continued in New X-Men: Academy X 1-19)

are there any trades of this series (that stand out) that i should pick up?

Last issue was great, I am going to love the art and storyline. Liked Santos' jokes and the new characters. What do you guys think?

I didnt care for the issue but it should be better once the actual story starts

Well first off, you have to decide whether you're interested (as of now) in the entire history of these kids, or just the 'new' history and the new direction they've gone in in the past two years.

First, I'd direct you to Wikipedia's New X-Men entry to read up a little bit on the history. There's some very rich and interesting characters, such as Laurie, Sophia, and Kevin, who have either died, been depowered, or forgotten.

If characters like those intrigue you, I would recommend the New X-Men: Academy X titles. They are, in my opinion, very good - however, the story is more akin to Generation X - that is, less action, more character development. If you enjoy drama and kids learning about their powers and student-teacher relationships and team rivalrys, then this is a very good 19 issues (32 if you count the 13 issues that precceded New X-Men, in the form of New Mutants (volume 3)).

If you're more in to action and destruction and bleak outcomes, then the re-vamped New X-Men will be more to your liking. Personally, I liked both, and I think having read all the material before the re-vamp, made the chaotic nature and destruction of the new direction all the more meaningful. If you don't know what I mean: people die. And if you haven't read their histories, you won't care as much about them when they die.

Now that we've gotten through that, regardless of whether or not you decide to pick up the earlier issues, definitely definitely definitely pick up the most recent issues, written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. So far their run has been released in three trades, all entitled "Childhood's End", and encapsulating a year's worth (not in comic book time of course, but in ours) of devastating events. If you are aware of the House of M, then you know what the Decimation is. If not, I would direct you to some quick wikipedia reading before reading the Childhood's End trades. House of M and Decimation.

So, the trades, listed as Vol. 1, 2, and 3 (of "Childhood's End) contain 4, 4, and 6 issues, respectively, and can be found for around $8 on amazon or $11 dollars in-store. They drive the story in the direction that it's currently headed.

However, the most recent issue is a prologue of a new story-arc, revolving around Magik, who was recently seen in "New X-Men: Academy X House of M", although we know it involves a different 'version' of Magik, it will most likely tie into those events, and plausably contain the New X-Men version of Magik as well. For reading on Magik.

One last note, in the issue you read, Laura/X-23 did not make an apperance, but if you're familiar with her, she is an essential componenet to the team, and has one of the best "origin" stories available, written also by the same writers as New X-Men. It's a six-issue arc that has been collected into a trade called "X-23: Innocence Lost" and is very good. Better than any Wolverine story I've ever read. They're also doing a follow-up story, called "X-23: Target X", although this is still being released. The story ties loosly to the most recent New X-Men arc, "Mercury Rising", a 4-issue story which to my knowledge has not been collected in tade form.

I know I provided you with a plethora of information, probably too much, but now you know pretty much everything there is to know. If you have ANY questions, feel free to ask, as New is probably my favorite title of any comic - ever.

I actually think this was the best issue in a long time lol. I guess I'm glad it's not centered around Hellion or X-23. I loved the art, but now that I see it on the comic, Anole and Pixie look so young. But I can live with it, let's see what the kids can do against Belasco

thanks for all the info, usagi. i'll def look into it.

So the question is
is Magic actually alive or is the HOM Magic dead, vanished whatever. The writers to me anyway kinda hinted that this was the case.
