The Pokemon Company has shared new information and screenshots on Pokemon GO, its upcoming smartphone game developed by Niantic Labs. An early user test limited to the United States begins today, and tests are also underway in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Get the new information below.OverviewView the screenshots at the gallery.
Pokémon GO will allow players to find and catch more than a hundred different Pokémon as they explore the world around them. When players approach a Pokémon in the wild, their phones will notify them and give them the opportunity to engage and catch the Pokémon using the phone’s touch screen to throw a Poké Ball. Poké Balls and other special items can be found at PokéStops, which are located at interesting places such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments. During gameplay, Pokémon GO players will be encouraged to join one of three teams and engage in Gym battles with other teams. After joining a team, players will gain the ability to assign their Pokémon to Gyms. Like PokéStops, Gyms can be found at real locations in the world.
Battle
Battling is essential to any Pokémon game, and Pokémon GO is no different. Players can battle using the Pokémon they’ve caught to gain control of a Gym. By using their own Pokémon’s attacks and dodging incoming attacks by swiping left and right on the screen, Pokémon GO players can defeat the defending Pokémon to reduce the Gym’s Prestige. Once the Gym’s Prestige reaches zero, the defending team loses control of the Gym, and the victor’s Pokémon can be assigned to defend the Gym. When a team has control of a Gym, team members can increase its Prestige and level by training their Pokémon with other defending Pokémon. As the Gym gets to a higher level, the defending team gains the ability to assign more Pokémon to defend it. They can also team up with friends and battle together at a rival Gym to take down stronger Gyms faster.
Avatar
In Pokémon GO, players will interact with the world through their in-game Trainer avatar. The trainer’s appearance can be customized by choosing from a variety of different clothes and accessories to make their avatar stand out from the rest. The customized Trainer image will appear on the map as the player moves around, on their profile page, as well as in Gyms under their control.
Pokémon GO Plus
A portable device called the Pokémon GO Plus will enable Pokémon GO players to enjoy the game even while they’re not looking at their smartphones. The device connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth and notifies the player about events in the game—such as the appearance of a Pokémon nearby—using an LED and vibration. In addition, players can catch Pokémon or perform other simple actions by pressing the button on the device.
In-App Purchases
Pokémon GO will be free to download on the App Store and Google Play. In-app purchases will be available for fans who would like to enhance their Pokémon GO experience. Players can purchase PokéCoins, the in-game currency of Pokémon GO. PokéCoins can be exchanged on the App Store and Google Play for power-ups and extra items.

People keeping up with Miitomo received an update on June 26, 2016. Nintendo offered a glimpse at things to come for the social networking app. The biggest addition is the inclusion of three new regions. People in Mexico, South Africa, and Switzerland will be able to create Miis and socialize with Miitomo. However, this is one of between five and six updates, depending on the region in which you live.
Five improvements and updates are coming to all regions. In addition to the usual bug fixes and adjustments that accompany any update, people will be able to use WhatsApp to invite and find friends, the Popularity and Style level caps will be increased to 30, and youll be able to share Recent News by talking to your Mii. It will also be able to put links into answers and comments, as users will be able to click them to go to the site in their Apple iOS or Android devices browser.
The sixth update is only going to be available for Miitomo users in Japan. Much like the Nintendo 3DS StreetPass plaza where special guests can appear via SpotPass, Miitomo will be getting Star Account Miis. These will be famous and notable people with verified accounts who can be followed or visited within the app.
Miitomo is immediately available for Apple iOS and Android devices. It will come to Mexico, South Africa, and Switzerland on June 30, 2016.

Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem apps delayed.
Nintendo made a surprise appearance at Apple’s iPhone 7 media briefing today to announce Super Mario Run, Mario‘s smartphone debut coming first to the iOS App Store in December. Users will be able to download a portion of the game for free, and can unlock all of the game content after paying a set purchase price.
The game is an runner where Mario automatically runs to the right of the screen. As he does, he’ll hurdle small gaps and certain enemies. The longer you press the screen, the higher he jumps, which is key to getting high scores. In later levels, you’ll see blocks that will change Mario’s direction and start and stop with specific timing. There is also a new “Toad Rally” mode, where players can choose an opponent from a list and try to beat their high score, and a mode in which players can create their own Mushroom Kingdom based upon those play results.
Here’s the full overview, via the Super Mario Run App Store page:In this game, you constantly move forward through the courses while using a variety of jumps to navigate. Your character will behave differently depending on the timing of your taps, so it’s up to you to show off particularly smooth moves, gather coins, and reach the goal.In addition to Super Mario Run, Nintendo is preparing a free Super Mario-themed sticker pack for iMessage that will launch day and date with the release of iOS 10.
Super Mario Run offers three different game modes:
- The first mode features challenging courses for you to complete.
- In the second mode, you challenge the play data of other people’s completed courses. You compete to see who can finish the course with the most style!
- In the third mode, you can create your own Mushroom Kingdom using coins collected by playing the first two game modes.
Finally, Nintendo announced that its previously announced Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem smartphone games, which were planned for release this fall, are now due out before March 31, 2017.

source: SiliconeraSuper Mario Run was recently announced to be coming iOS devices later this year. Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down for an interview with IGN about the upcoming mobile game, in which he discussed Nintendo’s approach to creating courses, the different modes it will feature, as well as what types of things he learned through working on Super Mario Run.
When asked to go into more detail about Toad Rally, the game’s competitive mode that lets you challenge friends and strangers on the Internet, Miyamoto had this to say:
“We’ve obviously had the ability to race against people in Mario Kart and with Mario Maker you’re able to share your course with people around the world. In this game, what you’re able to do is you’re able to choose an opponent from a list of people, and you’ll see people you don’t know, players from around the world, and the people on the list will be relatively matched to your skill level. But then you’ll also see within the list the faces of people that you absolutely do know who are your friends, and so you can choose who you want to compete against.”
Next, Miyamoto explained how Nintendo is coming up with various courses for Super Mario Run:
“So one of the things that we’re doing is, as you play through each individual level in the world tour, then those components of those levels will appear in the battle mode. In the battle mode, they’re arranged in a way that becomes endless in battle mode, so you can keep running through until times runs out. That’s one of the areas that’s a little bit different this time and we’re putting a lot of effort into that right now.”
Finally, when asked what his goals were and what he learned throughout the process of working on Super Mario Run, Miyamoto had the following to say:
“I think first what we’ve done is create a Mario game that’s very distinct from what we’ve done in the past and what’s available on home consoles. And so that I think is great because it’s its own unique style of Mario play designed for mobile devices that I think will be great for people who haven’t played Mario up until now.”
“So really the hope is that through this we’ll be able to reach a much broader audience and turn them into Mario players and then be able to offer them a next step with Mario on our own platforms. I think in terms of something from a development standpoint that we’ve learned, there hasn’t been a whole lot of new discovery there other than maybe the fact that we were surprisingly happy to see how playable Mario is in a vertical video format.”

Super Mario Run, Nintendo’s first Mario game for smartphones, was revealed about two weeks ago during an Apple event. Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the creative forces behind the upcoming mobile game, recently sat down for an interview with Yahoo, in which he discussed the origins of the game, the importance of consoles to Nintendo, the release for Android, and his wish to bring Mario to a larger audience.
First off, when asked about the origins of Super Mario Run, Miyamoto replied with the following:
“It started when we were working on Miitomo (Nintendo’s social game for iOS and Android), or before that when Mr. [Satoru] Iwata (Nintendo’s late CEO) was still with the company. Apple invited him to have a conversation about how the two companies could work together and they started working on ‘Miitomo’ and then this opportunity came up.”
However, this latest interest in smartphone games doesn’t mean Nintendo will be shifting away from consoles anytime soon, with Miyamoto adding the following comment:
“At Nintendo, we still put a lot of importance of sitting down and playing face to face.”
Next, he commented on the reason for prioritizing the iPhone over Android devices:
“One of the reasons we focused on iPhone first was the stability of the platform and being able to get the level of response that we want out of the games. And that’s not to say that Android devices don’t have the same level of responsiveness. But because there are so many Android devices, trying to engineer the game to work across them all requires quite a lot of time.”
Lastly, Miyamoto discussed his hope to reach a larger audience with the availability of a Mario game on smart devices:
“I feel very lucky, because there are a lot of people in Japan making characters and games that become popular in Japan. So I feel fortunate to be able to bring Mario to an audience around the world. And now with the reach of smart devices, we can bring Mario to an entire generation of kids, and hopefully be able to recapture those older players who played when they were younger and remind them how much fun it is to play a Nintendo game.”

We got a taste of Nintendo’s first smartphone app with Miitomo earlier this year, but they also have big plans for more. The company shared a bit on their goals for smart apps in their latest financial results briefing.
As we have explained in the past, Nintendo has three main goals when it comes to our smart device business. We would like to utilize smart devices as a platform to reach the maximum number of consumers with our IP. Of course, we also expect the smart device business to be profitable on its own, while generating synergy with our dedicated video game systems to maximize the potential of Nintendo’s overall business strategies. In addition to already-released Miitomo, we expect to have released the three titles listed above in series by the end of March 2017.
In September this year, we announced Super Mario Run, a new action game featuring Mario optimized for smart devices and playable with one hand. This game is set to launch globally in December.
The Super Mario action games have been well-loved by fans all over the world, and we hope to reach even more fans across the world through Super Mario Run. We have been informed that over 20 million people have already signed up to receive notifications for the release of this title.
Previously, we announced that we would be releasing Super Mario Run in more than 100 countries, but we can now say that we plan to release this title in approximately 150 countries for iPhone and iPad in December. Although we have not announced the release timing yet, we are also developing an Android version. Downloading Super Mario Run will be free, as will some of the play elements. All of the game content will be enjoyable after paying a set purchase price. With our current plan, once a set purchase price is paid, consumers can repeatedly play the game without worrying about additional fees required. So, children can also play it with peace of mind. We will announce further details, including pricing, at a later date.
We released Miitomo in March this year, and it will soon reach 15 million unique users. This title has not been impactful from a profit perspective, but the trends have been largely according to our expectations.
As our initial foray into the smart device business, Miitomo has focused on bringing Nintendo’s entertainment to as many people as possible across the world. Another main goal of Miitomo has been to let consumers connect with their friends. We are making preparations to allow friend relationships from Miitomo to be carried over to Super Mario Run. Since Super Mario Run has a mode where you can compete with other players, this means that active communication with your family and friends in Miitomo will lead to even more fun moments in Super Mario Run.
In order to enjoy Miitomo with your family and friends, we are planning a major update soon that will completely transform Miitomo by making communication with your friends even more fun. This update will introduce a unique message feature that lets you use your Mii character’s facial expressions and voice to send any message you want in expressive one-on-one communication. We are also planning additional features.

With Nintendos next mobile venture, Super Mario Run, slated to release next week for iOS devices, Shigeru Miyamoto recently spoke to the Wall Street Journal about this latest endeavor.
In regards to the creation of Super Mario Run, Miyamoto explained that development took approximately a year, and that the game was designed the way it was with how people hold their phones in mind. Since the majority of people hold their phone in one hand, this meant that the width of the screen would be narrow. This forced the team to design gameplay around the size of the screen, focusing on making Mario climb and drop through stages to progress and collect items.
When questioned why Nintendo had waited until this year to produce a game for mobile devices, Miyamoto replied by saying that smartphones simply werent powerful enough, even though he added that now there are more opportunities for consumers to come into contact with a mobile phone than our own gaming devices.
Super Mario Run will release for iOS devices on December 15th. It is scheduled to release for Android sometime next year.

Super Mario Run is less than a week away from launching on iPhones and iPads, and Nintendos Shigeru Miyamoto has been taking part in quite a number of recent interviews to talk a bit about the companys new mobile endeavor.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Miyamoto revealed that the upcoming Mario mobile game was, in part, inspired by watching speed runners. Nintendo employees noted that, with the D-pad continuously held down, gameplay boiled down to the players level of precision with their jumping, which is what Super Mario Runs main design is built around.
Heres an excerpt from the article describing the inspiration for Super Mario Run:
According to Miyamoto, part of the inspiration for Super Mario Runs auto-running came from a surprising source: super players. Watching online videos of these gamers astounding speed runs and other feats of gaming skill, Nintendo employees noticed that the gamers never let up on the D-Pad. Mario always kept running, and all of the skill came down to the incredible precision of the jumping. What if, the Nintendo braintrust reasoned, all players could have that experience? Ironically, the most skilled Super Mario players in the world may be partially responsible for introducing Mario to thousands and thousands of first-time players.
Additionally, Miyamoto reportedly also shared a bit about a time during which Nintendo considered adding GPS to the Nintendo 3DS with plans of making a game similar to Pokémon GO. This idea was ultimately scrapped, however, with Nintendo eventually deciding that it made more sense to put the game on millions of devices that already had satellite location tracking.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently spoke to CNET about the upcoming smartphone title Super Mario Run, as well as the companys future in mobile gaming. He also acknowledged the shortages of the NES Classic Edition in addition to revealing that Nintendo, as of now, has no plans to release classic NES games on mobile devices.
On the topic of Super Mario Run, Reggie told CNET that the mobile game would not see a release on the upcoming Switch:
Development for Super Mario Run is different than development for Nintendo Switch [the companys all-new Wii U successor, coming in March 2017]. With Switch were going to have a variety of input devices, a variety of ways for you to interact with the game. Here, its all the screen. So its a different type of development challenge. But at the core, our developers are looking to create content that you really cant get anywhere else, you cant experience anywhere else thats a core philosophy thats going to continue.
Next, he did acknowledge the shortage of NES Classic Editions with the following:
Every day theres more going into the retail channel. The overall level of demand is certainly greater than we anticipated, thats why were suffering through the shortages out there in the marketplace.
Despite the success of Pokémon GO and Nintendos hopes for Super Mario Run, Reggie said that there are currently no plans for bringing NES games onto mobile devices:
Candidly, no, without a fair amount of modification. And this hearkens back to the questions that we received maybe five years ago saying, Nintendo, when are you going to get into mobile? And at the time, it was positioned as, just take all your legacy content and just put it on mobile. The fact of the matter is, to make a great mobile game, you cant do that. You need to think about the input device. You need to think about, how is this going to be sticky?
Finally, though Super Mario Run will not get a version for the Switch, Reggie didnt completely rule out the possibility of a future Apple TV release, saying the following:
You know we havent even launched Super Mario Run yet, so we havent even thought about those types of applications, but again, what I would say is, we developed this to live on these kinds of screens, and to be played in this type of experience, and we think thats what its best for. Lets see what happens after the 15th of December.

Mario has been an integral part of gaming history for the past 30 years, and the iconic plumber’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, says he believes that, no matter where Mario’s future takes him, technology will play a highly influential role. [Thanks, PowerUpGaming.]
During a Super Mario Run event at the Apple store, Miyamoto was questioned on what kind of path he sees the Mario franchise headed down in the coming years, to which he replied, “It’s impossible to know the future. I don’t know what’s going to happen in five years.” He went on to reference a character popularity poll that had been conducted three years after the launch of Super Mario Bros., in which Mario had surpassed Mickey Mouse in popularity. Miyamoto went on to say that it was at that point he realized that “Mickey Mouse was a character that had evolved with the evolution of cinema and animation,” and that if he wanted Mario to continue to survive as a character, then Mario would have to “evolve with technology and video games.”
Here is Miyamoto’s full commentary:
“There was a point just a few years after we released Super Mario Bros. where somebody had done a character popularity poll, and Mario had become more popular at the time than Mickey Mouse. And people said, ‘Well, how do you feel about that?’ To that I replied, ‘But Mickey Mouse has been around for 40 years; Mario has only been around for three!’ And that was when I started to think that maybe what I should do is worry about what is happening with Mario 40 years from now, and then we’ll see how he’s doing against Mickey at that point in time.
“At that time, I realized that Mickey Mouse was a character that had evolved with the evolution of cinema and animation, and so it was then when I felt that if I want Mario to continue to survive as a character, then Mario needs to evolve with technology and video games.
“That’s why when we were making Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64; that’s why it was such a fun project for me. And it’s why when we made Super Mario Maker – and all of you could then become Mario game designers – that was a fun project for me as well.
“As far as what’s going to happen in five years, it really depends on what new technology I come across, and then at that point in time I’ll partner that technology with Mario – or maybe Link – and create something new.”
Super Mario Run will release for iOS devices on December 15th and sometime in 2017 for Android.
