If they made him look more manly and less feminine, I might have not have doubted :o

the upside to all this is that means Zelda herself has yet to be revealed.

I like Link's androgynous design :yay:

The open world isn't that new, though. The series started out as an open world, or at least the closest thing to an open world at the time. The games have often had an open world-type of design.
I didn't really like the first Legend of Zelda, but it has been a while since I played it. I know I'm the minority, but I really liked SS for its structure. But as long as the dungeons are still intact and as brilliant as they usually are than I'm sure I'll be fine with the open world.

If they made him look more manly.. It wouldn't be a Japanese game. Their FF make characters looked overly feminine for years now.

at least they nipped the "controversy" in the bud fairly quickly, even if that Nintendo guy did help fan the flames a bit.

it would have been extremely trollish if they had let it drag on for months and months and months before finally putting it down.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if Link's final design differed slightly than the one shown.

I actually wouldn't be shocked if this happens. They release this footage to gauge fan reaction.. if they think he looks to girly then they change it a bit.

Maybe not.. but I wouldn't be shocked if he had more of a SS or OoT face look before this hits.

I hope not. His Skyward Sword face looks pretty derpy.

After Spaceworld, I always assume the final product will look different.

But I wouldn't mind if the final product looks like this.

I am disappointed that we didn't get Majora's Mask for the 3DS, but there's always next year. I can see why they didn't want three Zeldas at this E3.

E3 2014: NINTENDO PRODUCER ON LINK'S IDENTITY AND ZELDA AS A HERO
Zelda's Aonuma gives us a bit more context, but not a lot of answers.

We asked Nintendo Producer Eiji Aonuma to provide some additional context regarding The Legend of Zelda's new trailer and his comment on the identity of the main protagonist.

"One thing I have to say is, I never said that wasn't Link," Aonuma explained. "I said 'No one ever said that was Link.' Every game needs to have a protagonist. You have to have a main character, so we create one that is ultimately supposed to become the player. With each iteration of Zelda, we make this main character and it's not as though this protagonist is not the same character all the time. It's just a role within the game that the player occupies."

"That's something that I tell my designers when they create the character," Aonuma continued. "Certainly, as part of a series, maybe people will think it’s the same main character but, ultimately, it's the player character. It's the person with the controller in their hands, if that makes sense. This kind of information can just exponentially grow, so I just wanted to make that clear."

With so many questions about the identity of the protagonist in the new Zelda trailer, we shifted the conversation and asked Aonuma about the potential of a bigger role for Zelda in a future game. Is he open to the possibility of the princess being the hero?

"I'm interested in seeing something like that, but I think one of the charm points of this particular franchise is that fact that it's called 'Legend of Zelda' but Zelda is not the main character," Aonuma said. "She's not the protagonist. But if you ask me what that is, I don’t know. I can't really explain it. Maybe if she's the main character, then maybe the title needs to change."

We reminded Aonuma that maybe the title doesn't have to change. In the end, he's one of the people that makes that choice.

I'm not big on the idea of making specifically Link a girl (though now he looks more girl-like than ever in-engine), but I think a Zelda game can be headlined by Zelda or quite a different male character. Characters with more personality.

Yeah I really don't think this..

Looks anymore girly than this..

Maybe it's because the hairs longer and more flowy...and the fact he looks a bit thinner.

His hair's not really any longer. Those weird little strains (mega-sideburns?) are about the same length in both pictures, just one is more dynamic than the other.

Link has always been a glorified Elf.. as are most Hyrulians... By fantasy law all male elves have to be a tad feminine in looks. Big blue eyes, long blonde hair.. etc.

Sure. I wouldn't deny that. I'm just saying that I don't think he looks any more feminine than he ever has in the past. When I saw that trailer, I wasn't thinking, "Who is that? Is that a girl?" I thought, "Hey, it's Link. He doesn't have his tunic yet I guess."

well, usually when I see other versions of Link, I can tell right away that it's a guy, no matter how feminine he looks.

this new Link looked a bit more feminine than usual, and in certain angles/shots, he did look a bit like a young (tomboyish) girl. whereas from other angles, he looks like a young boy.

I'm just glad the "debate" can be put to rest. and now I await the reveal of Zelda ( she better be blonde!! ).

although, to compensate, they'll probably make her look more butch.........lol.

and that being said, I think they should release a spin-off game where Zelda is the main character.

let the main series continue to star Link. but I see no reason why a spin-off can't star Zelda.

maybe it will happen if this new Zelda game is a hit and the new Zelda herself is popular.

I know. I'm on your side.

I'm really surprised that it hasn't happened in some form, considering how many forms they've put Zelda in. But, thinking about it, there hasn't been many actual spin-offs of Zelda. The only ones that come to mind are the Crossbow thing for Wii and the upcoming Hyrule Warriors. For the most part, Zelda has been mainline games one right after the other.
