There was a good bench clearing brawl in Boston tonight. Bottom 8th, 2 out, Red Sox up 10-3. Ortiz was batting, Kevin Gregg pitching. Gregg threw a ball tight inside belt-high on Ortiz and he kinda glared. He threw 2 more pitches close and Ortiz went to confront him. No fight, but the benches cleared, HP ump warned both teams.
Next pitch, Ortiz hits a flyball to CF. As he jogs to 1B, Gregg approaches him and must have said "Go walk to first base" (probably had some swears in there, too). The ump ejected him, then Ortiz goes after him and the benches clear again.
The umps have been awful lately in making right calls, but it's how confrontational they are that really annoys me because they're trying to make themselves bigger than the game. I thought the incident before the fight was the time to get in the manager/players faces and tell them to knock it off. I also think MLB needs to tell the players in the bullpens to not exit during a bench-clearing fight. The last thing you need in that situation is a bunch of guys running into the field, getting in the middle, trying to figure out what happened or throw punches.
