Personaly, I hope they at least sow the seeds of Emma getting booted from the X-men. Ever since she and Scott hooked up I've seriously lost interest in any main X-men characters.
Really? Seriously? The relationship between two characters has ruined your experience with every other character? Scott and Emma have hooked up, and now you can no longer enjoy Nightcrawler?

I don't like Scott and Emma's relationship but I love Emma so I hope they don't boot her. Maybe just reduce her power over Xavier's but not boot her.

She must feel so bad since a lot of kids have died under her tutelage and she has had to make a lot of difficult choices since she took over Xavier's. Maybe some of them weren't that good, but she had the courage to make them and that's what they need, a leader, and IMO Scott doesn't have what he needs to be a headmaster, he needs someone who tells him what to do.

I like Emma and Scott's relationship, mostly because neither of them know that Jean "forced" him into it which makes it seem way less wrong than everybody seems to think. But I want her to have less power over him... heh, I do love that little scene after Beast and Wolverine fight in "Gifted" where he asks if Emma is controlling everything he says.

And I agree; I like Emma. She's an interesting dichotomy of strength and weakness. I think they'll keep her around though -- Whedon at least, really likes his strong women roles.

Which brings me to Colossal Spoons -- Cyclops has been a bit lost since the Apocalyspe thing, which is probably understandable because his body was consumed by a being that wants everyone to die. Whatever.
And then you have to consider how Joss Whedon treats his male characters... women always have the domininant role in his stories and men come off as f*ups (so I've heard anyway) so if anything, Whedon has written Cyclops a certain way and others are propagating it.

So yeah, it's possible that Cyclops isn't the strongest he's ever been... but enough with the dish analogies. It's not like it's his fault -- he can't write himself.

Well, I can see where that image of Whedon comes from-- it does sorta hold true in "Buffy"-- but he's got a number of strong male characters, too. In particular, his main character in Firefly/Serenity, Malcolm Reynolds, is like a modern-day Han Solo. If Cyclops was acting like that, I don't think anybody would be complaining.

I've always thought the complaints of Cyke's weakness were a bit overblown, though. Writers like shades-of-grey characters, and they like smart-mouthed characters who can say cool stuff, so of course they get a kick out of Emma. As a writer of X-Men fanfic, I can testify that she's just a blast to write for. So maybe she gets some of the better material these days. But I've always felt that she has exactly as much rope at the Institute as Cyclops gives her.

Her little ambush in the current arc notwithstanding, I tend to think the moment Cyclops doesn't want her to have the power, she'll find out who's really in charge-- if only because the entire team would follow him over her in an instant.

Oh, definitely, but I was also referring to the Civil War events, which is what brought the whole Cyke-is-weak conversation into this thread.

Whedon is good at writing flawed male leads -- the others who take his characters into other places are not.

I personally like Scott and Emma's relationship, and I love Emma. Of course it's a matter of taste, but I honestly think AXM would be worse for the wear withought Emma.
For one thing, Emma, Wolverine, and Kitty are the only real characters in AXM, and Kitty is only real when she and Emma butt heads. What do I mean by this? I mean, all the X-men except for Wolvie and Emma are essentially one character. They all more or less feel think and act the same way. Joss's manages to mask this somewhat by his very witty dialogue, but even when you factor in the wit, they're all still the same. Snappy lines or not-- except for Wolverine and Emma; and sometimes Kitty. And the reason I'm not impressed with Kitty is this-- why is she on the team? Well Issue 15 we know why, and really that's the only reason. Other than that, her being on the team is kinda like Plastic Man and Steel being in the main JLA-- Why?
Without Emma Frost, and/or a moderately strong roled Wolverine, AXM would kinda be doomed. A gorgeous, snappy, wity bannter kind of doomed, but doomed none the less. I mean, the comparison of characters, of actual different motivations and reactions between Morrison's New X-men and Astonishing is almost unfair to Whedon's. (Of course... the comparison to art is unfair to Morrison's... I can see Grant Morrison emailing Joe Queseda, "My writing will be so good I'll save the X-men and do it with the worst art you could possibly sell someone.")
Finally (yeah, I'm wrapping it up, sorry) my biggest problem with Emma-Scott complainers and complaints is this-- it is nine times out of ten done with reference to the Jean-Scott relationship and my answer to that is this-- get over it! Comics have been in the same place for ever and ever. And of all the big teams, the X-men have been hit the hardest. You all may like that but please, for the sake of the rest of us, let comics go somewhere. That's why I buy trades or hardcovers ontop of my issues because sometimes I like to go back to the way it was first given to me, but sometimes you've gotta go on. I don't hate AXM, I like it a lot, but I think people are bit over-enthusiastic about it, and about keeping x-men in stasis.

That is a really good point.

People seem to forget that Cyclops pulls rank over Emma all the time, whether it's in Astonishing or in the other titles. Heck, usually when Emma wants to have her way, she has to go behind Scott's back because she knows he'll probably tell her no. And everyone will listen to him, because the only reason she's still around is because Scott wants her there.

speaking of Emma, what about the fact that she is still part of the hell-fire club what part do you think that will play?

That's part of the humour in her so-called second mutation though isn't it? Apart from her love of luxury, there's also the cold, unfeeling aspect.

Yeah Emma commented on that about herself when Scott and her first started seeing each other.
