Booster Gold #25 Preview

boog250005.jpg

"Day of Dead" concludes as Booster Gold battles Black Beetle in the past and jumps through time to team up with the new Batman and Robin in the future. But how are these events connected – and what is the Black Beetle really after?

Then, in Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes must stop the Blue Beetle scarab from trying to kill him…and everyone else on the
planet Earth!

A very nice article on Booster Gold Hitting #25 Again
http://blog.newsarama.com/2009/10/13/gold-exchange-extra-booster-gold-at-25/

With tomorrow’s release of Booster Gold #25 from DC Comics, the current relaunch does something that the title’s first incarnation in the 1980s could not at that point in its numbering.

I wondered how some other creators, friends and fans felt about Booster Gold turning 25 again, and asked them to drop me a line—a sentence, a paragraph, whatever—to communicate it. Here’s what I got:

Geoff Johns
(Writer, Blackest Night)
In all honesty, my favorite Booster Gold issue is coming up. The work Dan is doing on the Blackest Night crossover is stunning. It’s gut-wrenching and tragic, and yet you can see the absolute warmth and humanity Booster has inside him. It elevates the character to an entirely different level for me.

J.M. DeMatteis
(Co-Writer, Justice League International)
I think my favorite Booster Gold moment is in I Can’t Believe It’s Not the Justice League. Booster had been getting goofier and goofier…and then, at a certain point in the story, he realizes that he’s become a buffoon (y’know, moreso than the usual Beetle-Booster buffoonery)—and that he’s done it as a kind of self-protection. And he starts to smarten up. And everyone else just can’t wrap their heads around it. Especially Beetle.

I think I've been getting this book more for the Jaime second feature than I am for the main story. And the main story's not bad -- I very much enjoyed that alternate future we just saw with Kyle and Zatanna -- it's simply not very top-of-the-line work.

Just from looking at that preview, the art and expressions don't seem to jive very well with the writing, which is just triply dumbtarded considering that Jurgens is doing both writing and art. How can your own artwork not jive with your own writing? It's completely mindboggling, yet there it is.

I haven't really enjoyed Jurgens' art for years. I think he just churns it out without putting enough care into it now because he's been working in the same style for forever. Same deal as John Byrne, basically. He was amazing earlier but his recent work has all been stale and looks very by-the-numbers.

But it's great that Booster's comic is still doing well. I've been enjoying it. I'm dreading Goldstar's inevitable return as a villain, but as of now, the comic's pretty solid.

I like the book, I just find it aimless and lazy.

We open on Booster standing against black, snow coming down in big clumps. He thinks about the hours or days or whatever he has just gone through. We get a rehash, and a new Rip Chalk board: Son of Doomsday?? Waverider LIVES. Buy Milk and Toaster Tarts, ADAM STRANGE: Lost Son of KRYPTON? Beware the Oan Effect, Seven Soldiers of Destruction! ARMAGEDDON 2011??

Booster, Skeets and Rip return to the time lab, where Booster reveals he has a date with someone named Blair he met through an online dating service. Rip brow beats him into going to get the photos from the Batcave. Meanwhile, Rip realizes who the Black Beetle was working with, and he and Skeets go to pay a visit.

Booster arrives in the cave a half an hour earlier than before...but instead of Dick, it is Robin/Damien that gets the drop on him. Damien thinks Booster is easy to take down, but Booster doesn't even get a scratch and considers blasting the kid before Dick shows up. Dick asks Damien to have Alfred bring refreshments after Booster askes for time alone with him.

Meanwhile, Rip discovers mystery man is...T. O. Morrow. Morrow was using his first invention, that time viewing helmet, to witchess the death of the JLA, just as the Black Beetle promised. The Beetle arrives, and reveals he first came to Morrow to get Chronal energy to allow his scarab to time travel...but with the Red Scarab, he doesn't need any more help.

Interesting side not, Rip is dying his hair darker...Morrow notices but Rip states he has his reasons (like looking less like his father so his dad doesn't catch on who he is?)

Rip turns the tables on Black Beetle, feeding the scarab more chronal energy and having Skeets scan Beetle. Skeets states "Impossible" before Rip forces him to leave with him and Morrow, just as the Beetle and the lab go three mile island.

Meanwhile, in the Batcave, Booster spills about his mission, and Dick correctly guesses that being a corporate shill is Booster's version of a secret identity. Alfred and Damien arrive with drinks, with Alfred stating that with Booster arriving at the cave so much, he should reopen the guest room.

In an interesting note, Booster reveals that he has, during his time, gone to all the major events of history: The painting of the Mona Lisa (see Reality Lost), the assassination of JFK, why the Titanic really sunk ("I mean...iceberg? Get Real."), seen who sabotaged the Hindenburg, the fate of Amelia Earhart, the building of the Pyramids, the Crucifixion (I thought Booster was an atheist...did that change?), Krypton's destruction, Abin Sur's crash, the First COntact. He also states that one day he will witness the birth of existence.

Dick questions why Booster doesn't, say, go back and kill Hitler's mother. Booster asks if he took Dick to find The Joker's grandmother when she was six years old, would he kill her.

Dick also questions if he should trust Booster. Booster reveals that Bruce did, and how Booster was the one that told him, as Deathstroke, to Embrace his heritage.

Dick asks Booster for a favor. Booster states before Dick can answer that he can't save Dick's parents...that is Solid Time. Dick then states that wasn't what he wanted. Taking the cape and training Damien...Dick needs a reminder of why he does it. Booster knows what to do.

We come back to where the book starts, with Booster in the snow, 15 years in the past...revealing he is watching Dick, who is standing in front of his boyhood home, watching himself as a child on Christmas Eve, looking at presents as his parents smile. He reveals he didn this because, while Rip ses thing sin numbers, Booster sees the human side (leading me more and more to believe that Booster's color, when looked at by the Black Lanterns, will be Compassion). Dick sheds some tears and thanks Booster. Booster asks if they are good, and with one word, Dick (I hope) just cemented what will be a long friendship:

"Totally"

"Let's go home."

"Booster Gold" Shines In "Blackest Night"

2hx7wo6.jpg

CBR News: This issue marks your one-year anniversary with "Booster Gold" as both writer and artist of the new series. Do you feel the character has changed since you first introduced him in 1986? Have you changed?

Dan Jurgens: The character has definitely changed. When we ended the series all those years ago, we made it clear in the last issue that Booster would one day evolve to a point where he'd play a substantial role in the DCU. I think we're clearly in the midst of that now. Booster is continuing to get a handle on the idea of being a protector of the time stream.

As for me changing, yeah, it goes without saying. When I first wrote Booster I was pretty green, having only written a few issues of "Sun Devils." "Booster Gold" was something of a learning process and I'm much more on top of it now.

CBR News: I guess it goes without saying, but you must be pleased to see your creation once again becoming a driving force in the DCU. With the book tying in to "Blackest Night" for the next few issues, do you see that as a great opportunity to share what you're doing with an even larger audience, or is it more a burden as you need to more closely mesh Booster's story into the larger DCU?

Dan Jurgens: Not a burden at all. Tying into an event is easily done if it fits the parameters of the title in question and works for the character. Fortunately, we were able to cobble something together that is a real natural for Booster. "Booster Gold" editor Mike Siglain, "Blackest Night" editor Eddie Berganza, Geoff Johns and I worked hard to make sure we had something that would fit well for Booster.

CBR News: The issues see Booster face off against Black Lantern Ted Kord. With Blue and Gold being one of the most beloved of DCU partnerships, what can long-time fans of this dynamic duo expect from this storyline?

Dan Jurgens: It's a bit of a trip down memory lane while also being a bit of a heart wrenching story at the same time. While Booster had come to grips with Ted's death, he certainly won't deal well with the idea of seeing his [friend's] body pulled up out of the grave and reanimated.

CBR News: What is it about the Booster/Ted relationship that has resonated with fans over the years, and why do you think they play off of each other so well?

Dan Jurgens: First of all, it harkens back to a time when Booster and Blue Beetle flew in the face of a strong direction in comics that was taking everything in a darker direction. We all remember those 'grim and gritty' years, of course.

The "Justice League" book sort of countered that with a fun approach that really built on what was happening with those two characters. In addition, it's worth noting that while buddy movies have typically been a strong genre, it's something that is rarely capitalized on in comics.

CBR News: You've also been able to incorporate the new Blue Beetle into Booster's universe this past year as that relationship develops, as well. What are the major differences between a Booster/Jaime teamup and a Booster/Ted teamup?

Dan Jurgens: History. Ted Kord and Booster shared a lot of years, episodes, stories and practical jokes together. That isn't easily replaced, though Jaime Reyes and Booster clearly have a good relationship.
Thanks to Booster's time traveling ways, the Booster/Ted story has been the benefit of some additional chapters the last few years. Any chance we'll see a "Blue Beetle: Rebirth" coming out of "Blackest Night?"

Never say never.

CBR News: In the DCU, there are multiple Flashes and multiple Green Lanterns, heck even multiple Batmans. Is the DCU big enough for two Blue Beetles?

Dan Jurgens: The DCU is probably big enough for multiple Blue Beetles, if other universes count. But that's all a story destined to unfold over time.

CBR News: The January solicitation reveals that "after the shocking events of 'Blackest Night,' Booster Gold finds himself lost in time!" Can you share any details about the next arc and maybe tease what may be ahead for Booster in 2010? Is this the year that we're introduced to the "greatest" time traveler of them all?

Dan Jurgens: Hmm... without giving anything away, I can only say that Booster gets confronted with a great historical dilemma. If you're really in charge of protecting the timestream and events that have happened in the past, how does that balance with the cost of human life?

CBR News: Will we be seeing more of Michelle Carter soon?

Dan Jurgens: Absolutely. Sooner than you think, perhaps.

CBR News: Are you working on anything else these days?

Dan Jurgens: Yes, but, sadly, it's too early to talk about it.

I liked the Blackest Night issue.

Love Supernova!

Though I did notice a few selective continuity changes with Beetles death.

But, Diana and Booster! That's a relationship I can get behind.

I know I'm a bit behind, but I'm on week 21 or so of 52, and I gotta say, I'm digging it, particularly the parts with Booster/Skeets, as well as the whole 'Question' bit [but I like the Question anyway].

Love 52 so much. Wish I could read it for the first time again.

"Black Adam!" Shazam! Isis!"

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Seeing if it's contagious..."

BOOSTER GOLD #32
On sale MAY 12 * 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US
Written by KEITH GIFFEN & J.M. DEMATTEIS
Art by CHRIS BATISTA
Cover by KEVIN MAGUIRE
Just when things couldn't get any worse for our golden hero, fan-favorite JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis take over the ongoing writing chores of BOOSTER GOLD starting here! When someone from Booster's past resurfaces, Booster's life is turned upside down and inside out, and only a trip through the timestream can possibly set things straight.
And don't miss Booster starring alongside his ex-JLI buddies in this month's JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST #1 from writers Keith Giffen and Judd Winick!

The Maguire cover makes me question why he isn't drawing the insides.

The new team actually gets me excited for this book again. I think it became very stagnant about an arc into Jurgens' run.

Hmm. Well, I actually have liked most of Jurgens' run. Just having him on art was good. But if any creative team is to follow up properly, it's Giffen & DeMatteis. Looks like a "thumb's up" creative team to me.

I don't think it's so much that Jurgens' run was bad. It was quite good. It just ended up being pretty forgettable.

In my opinion, at least.

The Maguire cover makes me question why he isn't drawing the insides.
Takes a lot of work and he probably doesn't need to at this point.

Also, I didn't notice that Giffen and DeMatteis are the regular writers starting with that issue. I dropped Booster Gold a little while ago because I thought Jurgens' run was kind of meandering aimlessly. I'll pick it up again for Giffen and DeMatteis, at least for an arc or two.

I don't know, Maguire was drawing the Metal Men, and its not like Comic artists get paid so much that they can eventually retire.
