World Official Goblin Appreciation Thread - Part 1

Tbh, I thought he was perfectly handled. Final Curtain is still my favorite episode.

I was really hoping to see a much more personal rivalry, with Green Goblin finally becoming Spider-Man's arch-enemy. But nope, Norman's faked his death without a moment like the death of Gwen Stacy in the comics. So much for that one.

If Venom is shown enduring walking through a burning building in one instance, and then being warded off by an ordinary lighter, then both cannot be accurate because they contradict each other.

Ok, so what is your explanation for Venom running from a burning newspaper? And dont use "bad writing" as an excuse.

I didn't say that Norman wouldn't kill Peter's loved ones, but he wouldn't kill them all. Then what would Peter have to lose by exposing their identities? Nothing. Peter knows this, Norman knows this.

Norman is crazy. He doesnt have self control like you and I do. He may well go off the deep end and kill them all. Venom may be crazy but he also feels compassion. He's saved Peter's parents and even MJ from Carnage. Willingness to kill is the key here. Norman is willing, Brock isnt. Look at how Peter reacted after Aunt May was shot. He was willing to kill Kingpin. He was willing to kill Osborn after Gwen died. He did try to kill Osborn after Ben was impaled. Norman has pushed Peter to the brink. More than Brock has.

Green Goblin has hurt Peter, yes, but their entire purpose is to break him. That has failed. Green Goblin wins battles, but always loses the war.
Venom's intent is different. He seeks to break Peter psychologically through paranoia rather than despair. He can look like anyone, strike without warning from anywhere.

But all I ever see from Venom are gratuitous fight scenes. He hasnt been a true stalker in forever. As you said before, he is about the ambush.

However, it wasn't Norman's plan. It's like Cpt. Arthur Stacy's death. It's not really a success of a plan, just something that randomly happened to go in their favor. He wasn't planning on killing Ben Reilly, it just happened on accident. It's not like Gwen's death. Furthermore, if he really wanted to kill Peter, then he could have just used his spider-sense neutralizing gas and impaled him with the glider years ago. Or bombed him in his sleep.

See, thats the difference between you and I. You keep saying that Norman wants to kill Peter. I dont think he does. He wants to make Peter suffer...and he has succeeded. Venom wants to kill Peter and has failed again and again.

I assume that Harry would have become Peter's rival. He was definitely up to something at the end of the episode.

There is no other reason. The writer had no ****ing clue about Venom's durability. It's a statistical outlier, so it has to be ignored or the profile collapses. That's my whole point.

I'll give this: I wouldn't say that Venom is Spider-Man's arch-enemy (at least not if Norman is around), but I think he's a worthwhile and interesting villain in his own right. He's a unique villain, no other villain could bring all the same things that he could.

Well, I'm talking about Eddie's Venom at his best, since I'm talking about what I like about him. I'll admit that the character has been derailed, but I still like him.

Maybe Norman isn't interested in killing Peter. And of course Venom isn't going to kill Spider-Man. I don't think it's fair to dismiss the character outright for faliure to achieve a goal that no one wants to see him achieve.

I assume that Harry would have become Peter's rival. He was definitely up to something at the end of the episode.

Still, I don't think that Norman really got to (nor would he have the opportunity to if the series had continued) do enough after he was revealed to be Green Goblin. We knew his identity for a minute or so before he fakes his own death. It was a little disappointing.

But still, Norman stood out from all the others. And Norman would return in the future, so who knows how he would have been. PErsonally, I was very satisfied.

Well, I don't think that he was going to return for a while. As the series stands, I think Venom takes the arch-enemy spot.

That's my favorite, too.

Here's Spidey vs the Green Goblin by Steve Rude.

I am officially getting Norman's beautiful mug tattooed on my back in 12 weeks!

Anyone else wonder how terrifying Norman Osborn would be with a symbiote? Part of me just wonders what appearance he would choose.

Norman with the Carnage symbiote. Make it happen, Marvel!

I prefer that the symbiotes stay away from Norman.

But imagine Norman Osborn with that kind of power, that kind of knowledge! Peter Parker would be screwed. Plus, it's not like he's Green Goblin anymore. And it would be two of my favorite villains in one package.

^^ Yeah, but I really wouldn't want that happening. Norman is a god among Villains as it is and he doesn''t need the symbiote to elevate his status as the Green Goblin.

But he's not the Green Goblin, and if Eddie Brock isn't going to be Venom anymore, we need a new host for Venom that could possibly live up to the original. Norman is the best choice, and possibly the only satisfactory one.

Norman still is the Green Goblin, it's just that he's a ticking time bomb.

He's not actually wearing the Goblin mask. Better Venom than Iron Patriot or some newfangled horror. Plus it might be fun for a while, and we need a Venom. Plus, who said that he can't be Green Goblin AND bond with the symbiote?

Exactly. Merging Osborn with the symbiote is unnecessary and seems gimmicky to me. Let Ozzie become the Goblin again. Just because he isnt riding the glider now doesnt mean that he'll never do it again.

Personally, I dont think he can start hurling pumpkin bombs again soon enough.

The details on that work are fantastic. Its must have been a pain in the ass to draw all of those little windows and details on all of the buildings and Gobby and Spidey's costumes, but it was worth it.
