Just my instinct, but I don't think Legion is going to be anything other than a straw man to beat up on.

I think it will be a rogue machine that Hal has to stop. It'll be revealed that it was unleashed as a part of Sinestro's larger plan.

Phil:

Thanks.

Legion sounds like a great enemy for Hal to fight.

We know who the characters are now from the script review:

Martin Jordan
Hal Jordan/Green Lantern
Thomas Kalmuka
Carl Ferris
Carol Ferris
Kilowog
Tomar-Re
Abin Sur
Thaal Sinestro
The Guardians
Legion
Hector Hammond

-------------------------
If we go with Miller as the director, Aussie actors are needed so the three roles that I see being filled right off the bat are:

Hal Jordan/Green Lantern - Sam Worthington

Kilowog - Hugh Keays-Byrne

Sinestro - Hugo Weaving
If they go with Miller as the director, this could be the perfect casting choices for the GL film. And plus, this could be really a big success as Iron Man was. I like it :D

I wrote up some of these casting picks a while back. While I've since become unsure of some of them - the casting for Hal and particularly Sinestro - I thought I'd still post them here in light of these new developments:

HAL JORDAN: MATT DAMON

Matt_Damon-1-The_Departed.jpg

Is Matt Damon my dream casting choice for Hal Jordan? No. That would be Nathan Fillion. However, we have to look at this realistically. One strategy Marvel Studios has cleverly employed this year is backing up their films with a powerhouse cast of well-known actors. The less well-known the superhero, the more important it is to have a bankable star as your frontman. And Matt Damon is, officially, the best value for money in Hollywood, in terms of how many dollars his films make for every dollar he earns. He's got the winning combination of being popular AND talented, making him a highly desirable name to have headlining on a "Green Lantern" poster. Plus, he's shown with his work in the "Bourne" trilogy that he can more than handle the physical side of a character like Green Lantern. The only setback I could see is that, after both the "Bourne" series and the "Ocean's" series, Matt Damon could be suffering from franchise-faigue, and might be unwilling to commit to a multi-picture deal.

CAROL FERRIS - MICHELLE MONAGHAN

arsl07_monaghan.jpg

Funnily enough, the highly-talented Michelle Monaghan is also my top choice to play Catwoman. I must have Michelle on the brain. But should she not make the cut for Selina, she's more than able to take on the role of Carol Ferris.

SINESTRO - JAVIER BARDEM

javier_bardem.jpg

Another casting choice which, at first glance, seems unusual. Javier Bardem lacks the "big forehead" that a lot of people seem to find essential in picking an actor for Sinestro. However, thinking this through objectively, like a director wanting to produce a money-making film would, Javier Bardem becomes a smart choice. In casting Green Lantern's nemesis, you have to think of someone who's an interesting match for the actor playing your hero, you need to devise a pairing which creates intrigue. Like Robert Downey Jr and Jeff Bridges, Ed Norton and Tim Roth, or Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. Javier Bardem is hot off an Oscar win for his terrifying performance in "No Country For Old Men", and I'd certainly be interested to see how 2007's best villain plays off against 2007's best hero - Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon. Plus, I've always envisioned Sinestro to have a certain foreign, European vibe to him, which the Spaniard Bardem could capture nicely.

KILOWOG - RAY WINSTONE

beowulf-20071210045205585.jpg

I don't know if Kilowog would be brought to life through CGI or through Hellboy-style prosthetics. Either way, I think the guy to play him would be Ray Winstone. For some reason, I think his voice would just be such a nice fit for the character!

HECTOR HAMMOND - DAVID STRAITHAIRN

David%20Strathairn.jpg

In assembling together the leading actors of "Green Lantern", my main priority is in trying to get together as strong a group of actors as possible. An ensemble that, if I saw all their names lined up above a film poster, I'd instantly want to see that movie, regardless of what the film itself was. And so, to complete this suggested ensemble, I'd add the long-underrated David Straithairn. With Sinestro on the slow-boil to villainy, it seems that for this film, the main threat aside from Legion (who I imagine would be a CGI creation), will be Hector Hammond. Straithairn's worked before with Damon - on "The Bourne Ultimatum" - but I'd still be excited about seeing the two clash again.

Michelle Monaghan as Carol Ferris works for me. It would be funny if she were cast as Catwoman, that would make her the 2nd Michelle (after Pfeiffer) to have donned the cat-suit.

one could only hope

I Don't know why, but i think Jackie Earle Haley would nail as a Ethan Van Sciver's style Sinestro.

I'm sorry, I just don't see Matt Damon as Hal Jordan. Every time I see him, I think "Jason Bourne" or that dirty cop from The Departed. He's too recognizable.

I think a relative unknown (like Sam Worthington, Billy Crudup or Nathan Fillion) would work to GL's advantage. I wouldn't be against a high-profile name, provided he was good.

Agreed, but mostly cuz I want Fillion. I think if they need a high-profile name, they could do it for the villain or supporting cast. I think i'd prefer it that way. Get someone really famour for Sinestro or Hector Hammond.

I really like Philly's cast suggestions. The only two I would change would be Carol Ferris and Kilowog, where I would prefer Evangeline Lilly and Dennis Haysbert, respectively. Then add James Caan as Carl Ferris, Brent Spiner as Tomar-Re, and Greg Kinnear or Jim Caviezal for Martin Jordan.

Monaghan looks like Ivan Reis' Carol Ferris in the flesh! o_0

I just can't see Couture doing the crusty drill sergeant thing.

Yeah, Couture's just too nice to play the role. When he's not killing people in the Octagon, I imagine him frolicking in the fields and hugging puppies.

On one hand, I'm not entirely convinced by Matt Damon myself. There are other actors out there I've considered, but no one choice who I think is an absolute lock for Hal.

However, I wouldn't go the unknown route. Casting a relative unknown works for an iconic, well-known superhero (Hugh Jackman for Wolverine, Christopher Reeve for Superman, at a push you could argue Michael Keaton/Christian Bale for Batman), but with lesser known heroes, who aren't going to sell a movie on their name alone, you need a more well-known and respected actor headlining to create some intrigue. Think Robert Downey Jr for Iron Man.

Though having said that, if they find a relative unknown who's just perfect for the role, then I certainly wouldn't object to him being cast.
