I'm hoping they avoid the whole Hal downfall situation and bringing in Kyle raynor because that just seems like trying to service the fans for the sake of it, IMO. Obviously its probably not a popular opinion but looking at it from a general audience perspective, you grow with the lead character of Hal and then in maybe a third film or sequel you take it all away. Will they touch on hal being possessed by parralax, probably, but I don't think they'll flat out turn him into a villain and replace him. With sinestro most likely being the villain in the second film and probably the sinestro corps forming theres a lot of story that needs to be told.

I wouldn't mind a second Lantern brought in if done right, but that doesn't mean U think they should kill Hal or anything like that.

more or less, it's just a name chance and a cosmetic change, but regardless if it's Legion or Parallax, they still PROBABLY serve as a McGufflin for the film.

So according to the new synopsis, the movie is recognizing Hal as the first human Green Lantern. So they're not acknowledging Alan Scott?
Yes he is the first human inducted into the GL Corps. That is Hal Jordan, as it is in the comics.
He is the first human to meet and fight along side the Corps, the first to visit Oa, to see the Central Battery, and the first ever to meet the Guardians. This is not something new created for the movie, this is how it's been in the comics. Seeing as this is a Corps movie shouldn't it really all be seen for the first time through Hal Jordan's eyes, as it was in the books?

If they wanted to do a Mystery style Green Lantern, with supernatural powers and a more gothic detective feel, lighting up alley ways, lurking shadows, and mysterious swamps, maybe with Grundy or Vandal Savage as the villain, I'd be all for it. And I wouldn't expect or ask for Hal Jordan or any Corps members to show up, I'd want it to be about Allan Scott.

^ I can see them having Parallax possess Hal in the the end of the second movie or something, and then having him "rescued" by Kyle Rayner or something. Not that hard to do. It would be kind of like Anakin Skywalker going bad except it wouldn't last as long.
Although I don't think they would have him destroy Oa and all of that. But I can see them having Hal actually kill Sinestro and perhaps accidentally killing Carol and then she comes back to life as a Star Sapphire in the third film.

Except Hal is the young reckless pilot looking to belong to something bigger then himself, and Sinestro is the fallen master/champion of the Corps.
I doubt they'll have Hal go insane in the movie. He might struggle with his own fears and doubts and feel Parallax's influence and temptations, but if anything he's more the young and reckless pilot Luke who bravely overcomes it, and Sinestro is the fallen champion/father figure who gives in to it thinking he's right.
To revisit it again with Hal then falling too, after Sinestro would be absolutely redundant.
(And yes all this stuff as well as the Space Knights with weapons of Light, etc. ...all predate Star Wars)

well maybe scott could still be a minor cameo, or could be held off to a sequel.

it's more like, how do you putt him in and then explain his backstory. His Green Lantern is not related to the Corps, so it just complicates things. Also, if I'm not mistaken, he hasn't played a huge role in the current Green Lantern comics either.

Plus, you'll take the uniqueness away from Hal, as he is the first human GL.

sure who knows maybe they will use him maybe not. its no biggie to me.

So Captain America and Thor (again) gets all of these 'leaked' art concepts and we still haven't got a clue how Ryan will look like as GL? For shame WB! Hurry up.

Somehow I feel that the best is being saved for last. Let's hope that feeling is right.

We're sure to get something at Comic-Con. :woot:

So true, lol, in all fairness though we've had more pictures from green lantern and concept art leaked then we've had for thor (which is finished filming). The thing with GL's costume is that basically with it being CG, unless someone leaks it, WB holds the power to release it when they choose. The finished GL costume we'll only be able to see in stills from the movie which really sucks in some ways.

Those warners are so tricky.

I am more interested in seeing a picture of how the constructs will work.

I really hope they don't look cheesy like something out of a cartoon.

Word. They've got to make sure those don't look ridiculous, otherwise it hurts the movie. If Yoda weren't so believable in The Empire Strikes Back, he wouldn't have been as captivating.

well we got all this month and most of next to see something come out, or it could be held off to comic con.

We actually got far more concept art from GL than the other films about 2 months ago didnt we? It showed Sinestro, Kilowogg, the Guardians and I think Tomar Re and plus we saw a makeup shot of Hammond.

Plus, the Cap suit looks okay, but the Thor suit looks terrribly cheesy and cheap! LOL

dark you got to remember the concept artwork are just cgi renders of the costumes and not the actual actors or the materials and lighting/sfx and all that. So we are not seeing them in their full glory and all that.

So am I. I dont see how they can do it and have it not look cartoony

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Green Lantern will be featured by the WB at the Licencing Inernational Expo running from today until next week in Las Vegas. I wonder if CBM or somebody like that will have coverage?

Maybe you might get to see a preview of the video game or the CGI animated series. I will be looking forward to your report.

might be able to see Green Lantern movie-centric toys. I hope so.

This Marc Graser Variety piece disusses a little about the marketing strategy that the WB has for Green Lantern. It is obvious from the article that they intend to make this a franchise not unlike Superman or Batman.

Lantern toy biz depends on pic
WB ready to unleash torrent of merchandise

'Green Lantern'

Warner Bros. wants Green Lantern to make just as much green for the studio as Batman or Superman. But first it needs to make the character popular with the public. The studio's consumer products division plans to unleash a major merchandising effort around DC Comics' power ring-wearing space cop next year that includes everything from T-shirts to toys. But the fate of those products hinges on the perf of the "Green Lantern" movie, which bows June 17, 2011. It stars Ryan Reynolds and is helmed by Martin Campbell, who has experience in franchise relaunches as the helmer of "Golden Eye," which intro'd Pierce Brosnan as 007, and "Casino Royale," which did the same for Daniel Craig.

If "Green Lantern" clicks, it will undoubtedly be a big boon to the character's merchandise and bottomline of Warner Bros.' consumer products arm, which already generates $6 billion a year in sales. That's mostly thanks to Superman and Batman. The movie is the engine that drives sales of not only the merchandise, but also the vidgame and a new animated series, for example, that will help turn Green Lantern into a truly evergreen franchise for the company. The studio wants Green Lantern to grab a piece of the $5.4 billion that's generated from licensed toy sales each year, according to NPD Group. Roughly 25% of all toy sales are tied to entertainment properties.

Warner Bros. finds itself in the same situation that Marvel Entertainment did in 2008 with Iron Man. Like Iron Man at the time, Green Lantern is considered a secondary character in the superhero pantheon who has his followers, but outside of the nerd herd, the character remains unknown among most moviegoers, and as a result, consumers. But after the first "Iron Man" pic went on to earn $585 million worldwide, the property became a major source of licensing revenue for Marvel -- even surpassing Spider-Man -- and retailers were eager to pack their shelves with a large variety of products featuring the superhero this summer. It even got to the point where Walmart handed over real estate inside its stores to promote the red and gold wares.

Hasbro had a similar experience with "Transformers." Interest in the aging toy line picked up considerably after the first film bowed in 2007. Toy sales earned a whopping $592 million from last year's sequel, 20% more than around the first film. Warner Bros. is looking for that same kind of effect. It's been in this situation before: it breathed new life into the caped crusader with Tim Burton's "Batman" in the 1980s and again with "Batman Begins" in 2005.

While Marvel didn't have a wide variety of products ready when "Iron Man" bowed -- opting to wait to see if consumers would embrace the character rather than leave retailers hanging with unsold merchandise -- Green Lantern will be a different story. Green Lantern has only a handful of licensees creating products around the character like T-shirts, some action figures or pricey collectibles for adults. A year before the film bows, WB has already inked deals with more than 100 licensees, in North America alone, who will unleash product when "Green Lantern" flies into the megaplex.

Green Lantern has also been a central character in the Justice League, which Warners is also eyeing as a future pic franchise. Next summer's "Green Lantern" will be important in eventually getting that film off the ground.
"The Green Lantern film has an incredibly wide merchandise appeal," said "Green Lantern" producer Donald De Line. "The potential is there for amazing toys and merchandise because Green Lantern's ring can create anything the imagination can conjure."

Specifically, the character will be backed by action figures, vehicles, playsets, games, puzzles from Mattel, as the exclusive toymaker, with products involving its Hot Wheels, Tyco R/C and UNO brands. Other companies will produce apparel, videogames and collectibles. "The beauty of Green Lantern is that he is an inspirational superhero with a rich, unmatched heritage that will appeal to boys of all ages," said Tim Kilpin, g.m. of Mattel Brands. What helps the product push is that Green Lantern doesn't just revolve around one character but the Green Lantern Corps., made up of a large gathering of colorful characters who have all been chosen to serve in the space police force. And that aspect will be a key factor in the types of merch that's made. Naturally, a Green Lantern ring will also be offered in order for kids to feel as if they too, have been chosen to be a Green Lantern. "Mattel's Green Lantern toy program is going to introduce Green Lanterns like Hal Jordan and Kilowog to new fans everywhere," said DC Entertainment chief creative officer and "Green Lantern" co-producer Geoff Johns. "It is going to be amazing to watch the world discover the Green Lantern mythology."
