UPDATE: JoBlo has learned that Depp will actually be playing a fellow survivor that Smith's character finds named Philip. The site says that Cortman has been taken out of the story completely. Akiva Goldsman's rewrite apparently has the monsters unable to speak and they are more primal and unintelligent.

Oh boy, this just keeps getting better and better.

The idea of turning this into what now sounds like a buddy action/horror flick goes completely and utterly against the tone of the book IMO. Besides the fact that I cant imagine Depp and Smith having good on screen chemistry, the book is about Nevilles isolation. An adaptation of a comicbook that has been turned into many various incarnations over the years is abit different in my book. I was willing to give this a chance, even after the Smith casting which I think is still horrible. Lawerence seems to be an upcoming director and I look forward to his future work. Ill still see this, though I must say my interest goes further down the drain with each bit of news.

They have taken the concept and adapted it like they often do,until i see a trailer im not gonna worry,i like the 2 leads a lot and there was no way they were ever gonna make this a small horror film even back when Ridley and Arnie were attached

Which is fine but it is no longer I Am Legend. The other two movies based off of it changed the name, this one should too.

Depp would make an amazing Neville and could carry the film on his own IMO. If the Arnie/Ridley movie would have stayed truer to the source material we'll never know. I'll wait for a trailer, but I dont like what Im hearing.

first off, i recomend that anyone who hasn't read the book, to please do so. It's a great story, and probably equal to Dracula in terms of Vampire stories. When you read it, you'll understand why this film cannot be called "I Am Legend".

SPOILERS AHEAD! BEWARE!

The concept of survivors ruins the film, it destroys the point of calling it "I Am Legend". The vampires become the dominant civilization in the world. There is no room for Neville anymore. Concepts became reversed. Vampires are no longer the myth, man is. Man is no longer the real thing, Vampires are. The vampires fear Neville, and he cant exist in the world anymore.

human survivors destory that. The protesevich script(which apparently Goldsman is basing his script off) gets rid of the themes in the book. It becomes Night Of The Living Dead with Blade in it. That's not what the novel is.

and the Arnie/Ridely script is similar to the Protesevich script. The Protesevich script takes alot from the Arnie script. But where the Arnie script is better, it also destroys the themes in the book. Although, i could really see Arnold in the film.

But this new movie...it's just some rape of great literature. Sure, you have Superman, but he's built up on YEARS of different material. There is only ONE I Am Legend. I will not see this movie. I refuse. I'll stick to The Last Man On Earth.

Maybe it'll just be based on "I am Legend".
I mean, look at "The last man on Earth" and "The Omega Man"....clearly based on "I am Legend" but with different names

The Last Man on Earth clearly resembles the book in almost every way. It's extremely faithful as well. The Omega Man, i haven't seen in a LOOOOOOONG time, but from what i remember, it had it's moments, and resembled the book somewhat. perhaps someone who knows that film better can explain.

but this movie doesnt resemble the book at all.

Meh, I guess I'll watch it regardless of what they do....but "TLMoE" ROCKS.
I should actually buy the MGM dvd...widescreen, baby

Granted it could be a good post-apocalyptic movie, but with such drastic changes it resembles nothing like the source material, therefore should not be called I am Legend.

It's like so many other movies adapted from books, Instinct was supposedly based of of Ishmael, but didn't come close to resembling that book or themes in it. The Time Machine with Guy Pearce was a horrible adaptation and the only resemblance was the fact it had a Time Machine in it, the same with Frankeheimer's Island of Dr. Moreau, the original movie version of War of the Worlds.

As Separate entities they were okay movies (none great IMO) but were so far away from the source material they should have been said to be "inspired by the book" not based on it.

They need to change the title, they need to change it from based on a book by Richard Matheson to inspired by the book I am Legend.

When you have a movie based on certain material whether it's a TV show, a book or a comic there are certain expectations that are going to come with it. The movie doesn't have to be exactly like the source material, but the themes and character development should, at the least, stay true to the source material.

Shooting Dates for I Am Legend
Source: Production Weekly
August 16, 2006

According to Production Weekly, Warner Bros. Pictures has planned a shoot longer than six months for the Francis Lawrence-directed sci-fi actioner I Am Legend, starring Will Smith.

The movie, based on the Richard Matheson book, starts filming on September 23 and will continue until March 31 in New York.

Smith plays Robert Neville, the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood.

By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.

The studio has already scheduled a November 21, 2007 release date for the film.

So true hunter. Some don't realize how hard it is to translate from book to film. It harder for some stories that others. Just because something is not 100% faithful doesnt mean it cant be good. Now im gonna go read the book to see what all the fuss is about. Just from what I rwad on here it sounds really interesting.

The thing is, if you can't translate a book to a film, why do it? And if you can only do a half-way job of it, why keep the name of the book?

I mean, it just seems disrespectful to the fans. They might as well say "Inspired by ______"

this Akiva guy sucks ass, TDC was a awesome book but the movie sucked ass!!!

The book can be adapted as a small thriller i think but the concept lends itself to a much bigger scale movie so i think they should call it something else and put inspired by on the credits

i thought this would be a summer movie ... the plot seems to be like one.

It can be done Im just saying that certain events that happen in a book may not come across the same way on film. I mean look at WOTW... when I saw the film I had already read the book so I know how it basically ended but the movie ending just seemed kinda abrupt. One minute the aliens are tearing Earth a new a$$ and next they are falling down dead. Now once I read the book I will be able to get into this more I think... but im not going to scream blooy muI see a trailer or some clip of some kind.

Found these pics (taken on Sept 3rd by Simonpride) of early second unit filming for I Am Legend thats taking place in NY.

I'm really looking forward to this. With Smith and Depp starring and Francis Lawrence behind the camera.
