7.5/10

I actually liked the twist and think it's funny that fans are so angry about it. The main thing I didn't like was the Extremis plot. The Extremis soldiers reminded me of the alien army in the Avengers. I never took either of them seriously as a threat to the protagonist(s). Another thing that I didn't like was the fact that it wasn't as funny as IM1 or Avengers. However, the more serious tone was handled very well. RDJ did a great job taking on a more serious performance than what we've seen out of him in his previous 3 outings as Iron Man.

The more serious tone is one of those things that I'll have to get used to, but it caught me off-guard during my first viewing. Now that I'm aware of it, it will be interesting to see how I feel after repeat viewings. All of that being said, this is a lot better movie than IM2. I would rate this is as the third best Marvel Studios film behind IM1 and Avengers. IM2 is the weakest Marvel Studios film I've seen at 5/10, so IM3 is a huge improvement and I'm glad they put a lot more effort into this one.

IM3 still remains the only MCU film that I love enough to watch it twice in the cinema.

I've seen every one of them at least 3-4 times in theaters. Some, like the Iron Man movies, TA and Cap's movie I saw a great deal more than that in theaters. I think I saw IM1 some 13 times in theaters. That's pretty much a record for me but it was and still is my 2nd favorite movie that I have ever seen after Jaws in 1975.

Ha, you and I seem to have a pretty similar opinion about IM1. Granted, it's not my 2nd favorite movie ever, but it is my favorite Marvel Studios movie by a pretty decent margin. Despite everyone's eagerness to say the newest is always the best, I still say Batman Begins is the best DC movie of the last 15 years and IM1/X2 are still the best Marvel movies of the last 15 years.

New does not always mean better. Avengers was hilarious and a great spectacle but it didn't quite have the heart that IM1 did. IM3 is a huge improvement over IM2 but not quite in the same stratosphere as IM1/Avengers.

And he remedies this by having the middle part of his movie just being Tony lounging around in someone else's house ? At least Tony's house rocks.

eh, there is [BLACKOUT]only like 2 minutes of Tony lounging in the kid's house... [/BLACKOUT]

I'd say IM1 and TA are the best Marvel films made, but I agree about BB. I never warmed to Singer's X-Men franchise much due to the ham-fisted, unsubtle message mongering that was the staple of that franchise. The coming out scene in X2 was just the pinnacle of all that. Talk about a sledgehammer to the head.:whatever: I just hate it when a movie is shoving an obvious message or allegory down my throat. Still, X2 was probably my favorite Marvel movie before Marvel started making their own films. Now I'd rank every single one of their films at or above X2. I haven't seen IM3 yet so we'll see about that one. I personally put IM2 right in the middle of the pack of the phase 1 movies. Better than TIH & Thor a bit but not as good as the rest.

What exactly is so funny about people having a valid complaint about a movie??

I think the question is more if the complaint itself is valid. Haven't seen the movie yet so I can't say, but for me what is most important is whether or not it works in the context of the film itself.

That's what a lot of people have been saying, that it "works in the context of the film".

I can't wait to see it this Friday. See if it's better than IM2 or not.

I really would hope it is better then IM2. Personally having a hard time waiting. Less then 48hrs now.

FILM CRIT HULK has weighed in on why a few people aren't liking Iron Man 3 and delves into Shane Black's storytelling style. Worth a read.

POPCORN MOVIES FUNCTION BEST WITH WHAT WE CALL A, B, C TRANSITIONAL FILMMAKING. A IS HAPPENING. THEREFORE B HAPPENS. BUT C HAPPENS, THEREFORE D HAPPENS. AND SHARP TRANSITIONS THAT MAKE ALL OF THOSE EVENTS FLOW INTO EACH OTHER. THAT KIND OF THING. THERE IS VERY LITTLE FEELING OF "AND THEN THIS HAPPENS!" THIS KIND OF STORYTELLING IS HIGHLY EFFECTIVE BECAUSE IT KEEPS THE AUDIENCE INTERESTED IN WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT EXACT MOMENT.

Looks like someone has listened to Trey Parker's masterful screenwriting advice-- "therefore" and "but", one of the best writing tips I've ever heard.

I can see what he's saying about Black's style not being that way, probably because it doesn't apply so strongly to the Mystery genre, which is sort of its own beast in that way. It's very interesting. Can't wait to see this tomorrow night.

I don't know, it's just amusing to me that people are so disappointed by it. The twist was hilarious and I think the general audience will eat it up.

I love how
Stark has been holed up in his basement for months building suits to prepare for any situation he can think of, but when the $#!£ hits the fan he's caught with his pants down in an untested prototype. The same suit that for the rest of the film is moments away from totally falling apart, just like Stark himself. Then at the end Stark deliberately destroys the suit at the moment of facing/defeating his demons.

The more I think about this film the move I love it.:yay:

Yeah, it becomes less funny when you realize that [blackout]Starks goal in making all the armors was to protect the one thing he can't live without.

LOL, how ? In a broken suit ? One wonders how serious he is in protecting Pepper[/blackout]

I wasn't using "I love how" in a sarcastic way...

IMO it completely works.
The worst problem is that the marketing enticed Kingsley's character and it should not have been a bait and switch.
If you can get past the marketing, then this is a great movie.
in fact if Black just came at the beginning and removed the very presence of rings, this backlash would'nt have happened.

Ive heard people say that the film is very serious and then some people say that it isnt serious enough? which is it? lol

Definitely the latter. It's the funniest of the three [blackout]or at least it tries to be.[/blackout]

I just saw the movie.......

I'm not going to go on a big review as i don't have patience for it.
All actors do an amazing job, the script has it's moments of pure brilliance and it's well directed.
Now for the bad...

The all more Tony Stark and less Iron Man works.....but it's way overused. I like serious movies, i defend that powers are nothing without a man/woman behind it, so, i like it where they doing......but, once again, it's way overused, and it defeats the propose of it all. This is not "The Adventures of Tony Stark, the sometimes known as Iron Man".
The humor borderlines the ridiculous sometimes.
I'm the first to say that i'm a cynical guy, i like serious movies and i don't like humor when it's not a comedy (i like sarcasm and irony, but that's not the same as pure lol moments).
The all anxiety moments it's underused imo.
Yeah, the man can't sleep; yeah, the man has anxiety attacks....but they never really explore that outside some dialogues.

And than there is the "twist".....
OH MY ****ING GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT???????
It's the biggest slap in the face for everyone that knows comic books.
I can't even explain what i just saw....
After the "big revelation" i was, for 15 minutes, speechless......mesmerized....in the worst way possible.
What makes it even scarier is not that the twist was made, but that MARVEL ALLOWED IT!!
HOW THE HELL DID MARVEL ALLOWED THAT?!

All in all, the movie was better than i expected in some ways, but awful in ways i never even dreamed off.
After watching the trailers, there was something in there that made me think the movie was going to disappoint....i wasn't wrong.
The best description i can give is that, in tone, the movie is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...with Iron Man.
It has the same kind of humor, the same kind of dialogues, the same kind of........everything.
But the thing is, this is Iron Man, so, in that regard, KKBB works better (i like this movie btw)

I give it 5/10.
The good is very good, the bad is painful bad.

The big question is, is this Marvel under Disney?
Is this the kind of "crap" we will get from now on........that's frightening.

It tries to be.
But when it is, it gets scared of it and messes it up....with a bang

I think the film touches serious subjects about the characters, but as the film itself, the dialogues are very, very funny.

That is the most serious problem with the film I had. It tries very hard to be both, and ultimately it ends up being neither.

I didn't find the dialogue to be anywhere near as funny as IM1 or Avengers. Funniest moment by far was the twist scene. Beyond that, there were a few chuckles here and there but not as LOL funny to me as IM1/TA.

Then it must've been me, because I laughed a lot. Perhaps I was in a good mood, who knows.
What I got from the movie was a very palpable chemistry between Shane Black and Downey Jr., like every line he said in the movie was very well said, the pauses, the way the lines were delivered. It felt to me like they were really on the same page when it came to the dialogues and Tony Stark as a character.
